>If you add certain things, like 3-up Moons, via #lm{16x}, it will reappear any time the level is reset Try to avoid this by using #lm{objects} instead, unless in the point of Coins in P-Switch puzzles.
1. Don't use anything that's overused. If you take a look at 10 or so chocolate hacks hosted here, you'll have an idea of what is and isn't overused. Find some new or obscure graphics to use, or better yet, make your own!

2. Keep all graphical style consistent throughout the ENTIRE HACK. Having one level with cartoony SMB3 graphics and then another with Donkey Kong Country graphics just isn't right. Keep a consistent style to make your hack look professional and thought-out.

  • Don't use purple coins.
  • Make sure to back up your ROM before using third party tools such as
xkas, asar, SpriteTool, LevelASMTool, or anything modifying really critical stuff.
  • Use ALT + Right Click to make nice looking gradients in your pallete.
  • Don't use coarse language in message boxes, your hack will get played more if it's appropriate for all ages.
  • Unless you have a specific reason, don't use the outlined or filled ! blocks in Map16. They will always stay the same, if the switch is pressed or not.

I'm busy IRL. I'll come back someday, but until then, I'm taking a break.
1. Make sure your level is in such way that the player cannot stuck or break the level.

why no work
Do you know the "item memory"? I've got an important tip:
Once you collect a coin, that's affect by item memory, in every submap, a coin with that's affect by item memory item memory will at the same position of the collected coin in a another submap never appear unless you're entering the OW.
(You collect a coin as example at the coordinate 4,22, than every coin at the same position won't appear, because the item memory works on every submap [not enough RAM adresses].)

Okay, my layout looks ugly.
Don't focus on making an amazing level straight away. Work on others and improve it over time.

always use 400 second on every level

Not every level is the same length.
If you use custom bosses, make sure that they don't require so many hits it gets boring quickly. In fact, try to avoid fake longevity in general.

Legacy custom music

How am I so creative? I think taking walks might have something to do with it.
Every single level I will ever make in SMM2 will be easier than Ultra Necrozma.
-Don't force the player to get hit/die to move on.

-Don't force the player to use glitches.

-Don't force the player to complete other levels to move on.

-If there are areas in the level were you need to go high set vertical scroll to at will.

Currently: Ripping off (what used to be) MercuryPenny's footer, which is also a rip off of someone else's footer, so... I don't know if I'm like stealing a footer sence im ripping of a ripped of footer but...meh. I won't worry about it, and also celebrating 1,000 subs on youtube :D and trying to beat nightmare mode on FNAF3 and 20 mode on FNAF 1 and 2
While your (MarioGamer125) post is relevant to discussion, you still need to be careful.

- Decorations and secrets will make the level more interesting and gripping.
- Be careful not to abuse extra lives in a level, spread them out over your levels!
- If you decide to use patches/sprites/whathaveyou, always test it on a test ROM to make sure that it is not broken, and back up your ROM before inserting it.
- Gimmicks can make your level interesting, but don't make your level repetitive, utilize it in many ways! If you run out of ideas and your level is too short, use another gimmick.
- Your first level in your hack should be somewhat short and simple, while introducing the player to some of the features. YMMV though.

If you must beating other levels isn't so bad sice it'll make your hack complex (even it's as a patformer abnormally).

Not every level have got decorations (look at "Bad Apple" from Touhou Mario and my avatar is based on it). :P Of course since decorations wont't make levels so empty. #ab{;)}

I don't recommend using a custom block/sprite/music/graphic/patch that is waiting to be moderated because it might be broken and mess up your game and you'll have to start over. (unless you backup your rom)

If your not using ExGFX in your level, try using unused map 16 vanilla tiles and custom palettes to make
your levels look nicer.

Going to unsticky this since it's fairly dead. If you have any decent tips you would like to contribute, PM myself or another administrator.

Thank you.
