Cheph's Adventure

Standard

The name kinda sucks, so I'll take suggestions.

This is my first hack, and it is pretty difficult. It is not unfair though. Anyway, at the moment, it has 6 levels. 1 of those is a Star Road level. The game only has 6 world including the Star Road and Special world.

Story

Cheph, one of Mario's cousin, has a dream of becoming a great cook, but he needs to learn from the best, so he has to venture to the Legendary Dojo hidden in the snow of the cave. When he gets there, it turns out that Yoshi, the Master Cook, was taken by Bowser, the leader of a group of chefs named the Kooking Koopas. So he has to go save Yoshi, but there seems to be another force at work other than the evil plannings of the Koopas...

The hack includes Custom music, Custom Sprites, a few small ASM hacks, and very little GFX. I'll insert Custom Blocks soon.

Graphics are pretty much unchanged. Cheph is just Mario with a pallete change. I really suck at changing graphics. Yoshi was changed to Parlor. The graphic for Parlor were made by Nimbus Cloud.

Here are a few Screenshots.

I used savestates in the photos. I was in a hurry.

The story seems really good! Props to you! :D

And, your OW palettes and design look great, just like your levels! :)

Although, here are some complaints:

1: Cheph's palette is kind of weird. That white seems just there out of nowhere. It doesn't really fit. Try making it have a little more texture, or darken it a bit.

2: Why are some boos pink in that one screenshot with them fences? And why is there a pink square just...there...?

3: Please change the palette of Larry's platform. It just seems too bright. Also, why is that one single, lonely platform at the right? Maybe you should remove it, or add one to the left side and center the main one a bit more.

I'm liking this so far. Fix these problems and keep it up! ;)
The white actually is supposed to look like an apron.

The boos...well...thats in the original game. You're right though, it doesn't look right.

The Pink square is the fence, but the black background makes the pink square look empty.

The platform looks fine to me. I might tone it down a bit though.

Thanks for the critism though!

EDIT: I forgot to mention. The right platform is covered by lava.

I know that's what the white is. But couldn't you just try and see if making it darker helps?

About the right platform: Oh, okay then, never mind.

And, when I said a pink square (which is more of a rectangle), I was taliking about this:

What is that? o_O

Also, you're welcome! :D
...Oh. That's the star...its a cake. I was bored one day and started making some graphics for power ups.

The Fire Flower is a Thunder Apple.
The mushroom is still a mushroom
The feather is bubblegum.
The star is cake.

I decided to do my graphics AFTER I finish everything else. I just did that for fun.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhh okay then. Now that I look at it, it looks like a cake.

Well, never mind, then. ;)
hmmmmm, every thing looks decent so far from the level design to the palettes, you should put up a video of your hack if you can.
I've been trying to tone down some of the difficulty, but I've been designing it like that from Day One, so if anyone thinks its too hard, I'll make an easier version for them, but I'll be posting stuff for the current version.

I'm also thinking of totally remaking 1-2. (Its a cave with a low time limit and a flying yoshi section thats a pain in the...yeah.)

I was thinking if a beachish level.

I also have a video of my first castle. It seemed like the best level to showcase. Tell me if it is too difficult. I'm always open to suggestions.

Bad Quality.

Going through some changes right now. I refrained myself from making levels with Muncher plants on the first world. Remade level 2. Remaking level 3. And I might edit some parts of the castle. Another video might come soon.

Okay, let me put this in the most honest yet nicest way.
It. Hurts. My. Eyes.
(Talking like that gets point accross, yay)
Seriously, "Cheph"'s pants (or "apron" as you put it) is too pure white and as such an eyesore.
Please tone it down and add shading so the sprite doesn't clash with the 16-bit graphics.
Some of the graphics you drew use about 4 colors, while the unedited graphics use more. Clashing much?
I saw a bit of cutoff on the overworld.
Also, glowing yellow Layer 2 Castle FG? Ouchies to the eyes.

Anyway, not to sound like a jerk, but I got some pluses.

Your castle level design is neat, (although there are instances where a reset door would be nice), and the music is also good.

Hope to see more, I guess.
-I really can't edit it without ruining it. I'll try once more though.

-The castle is not using the Layer 2 anymore. After I took it out, it didn't really change the the level. I'm also reworking that level.
(When I make a level, I make them out of trial and error.)

-I don't see a problem on the OW. I have moved the fortress, so its not built in to the side of the cliff though.

-Thanks. The castle will be changed. Mostly the first part with the bouncy footballs.

-I plan to have music for almost every level in this hack. So, look forward to that.

Castle looks way too hard. A lot of it requires near perfect timing, and the bonus room leads you back to the BEGINNING of the level. Your P-Switch music is incredibly annoying, and, although the castle music isn't annoying, it doesn't fit a castle very well.
Its a deserted soup kitchen that was taken over by that evil Larry Koopa. This is a ruined soup kitchen. I think the song works.

The castle will be remade in some parts.

I might lower the volume of the P-Switch. That might help.

Thanks for the comment.

Yeah, Double Post.

The hack is almost ready for a demo. One last short video before I upload it.

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/QnRz3kosoIo&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/QnRz3kosoIo&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

I changed Cheph's Pallete. He wears a light tan apron now. Thought that would be more eye soothing. The castle is completely remade. As well as the ghost level. Just gotta change some level names, messages, and clean up the graphics.

Remember when I said I was gonna add Custom Blocks? Well, I can't. Just tried. Crashed my rom. It removed ALL sprites from every level and made every jump was a wall jump. :/

This really put me back on some of my levels. I wanted to use quite a few custom blocks for the swamp part of the forest world. So, yeah. No custom blocks unless I find a way to fix this.

Also, the rollback pulled my hack of the site. I will put it back up soon.
Your layout has been removed.
Oh, before the rollback, I actually rejected your hack, due to a few issues:

The OW didn't function correctly: after finishing Night of the Damned, no new level opened up. I couldn't get any further.

Bullet Bill placement allowed for infinite 1-UPs here.

The idea with the Big Boo Boss was good, but the scrolling rate made it really tricky to get across the platforms. Plus, it would often disappear in your hands unless your were really quick.

One last thing that frustrated me was that many areas required P-switches, not telling you they were required until you reached them. Granted, you usually provided a door, but you had to go through the whole level again to do this.

I hope you take these things into account before you resubmit. There were a lot of parts I really liked though, such as the music and sprites used.
-I'll remove that bullet bill section.

-I'll look into changing that boss.

-The OW was working before...I'll test it once more.

-I really can't put a message in the first level. Layer 3 tides. Sorry. I'll put a pipe that leads to the P-Switch though. I'll put a message in Night of the damned also.
Your layout has been removed.
I've been working on more levels. I'm not gonna release the demo yet. Not many people have noticed my hack, so I will wait.

Anyway, I might as well put up some screenshots to make this post less empty.

Screenshot of the first level of the forest world. Level not yet named.

It begins at the bottom of a big hill like structure.

This is where the level splits into 2 paths. One leads to the not so secret exit and the other to the normal exit.
