NBA Jam Old-School Edition (Update 9/2/21: No Longer on Hiatus)

As you may or may not have heard, NBA Jam Old-School Edition is my hack of NBA Jam Tournament Edition for the SNES. My goal is to make this hack feel like an enhanced version of the original arcade NBA Jam. After approximately four years(mid 2005), I finally released my first demo.

Now, with two additional years having passed, as well as the conclusion of my busiest college semester yet, this is the perfect time for me to release a new demo. So, without further ado...

Download links (Edit - July 4, 2020 - Link fixed):
[IPS] NBA Jam Old-School Edition (2nd Demo) May 18, 2011: 2nd Demo Revision 1 - 596.43 KiB
February 21, 2009: 1st Demo - 416.82 KiB

Please be sure you read and obey everything in the readme file. This project is a passion of mine, and I wouldn't want to be forced to cancel it...

2nd Demo Additional Features
  • Initial-entry and record keeping reenabled (although you still can't progress through the game)
  • 10 secret players
  • Backboard breaking (slightly buggy)
  • 10 more announcer catchphrases
  • A new music track which is played between quarters (click the YouTube video link below to listen to it)
  • Yet more cosmetic changes, including those seen in the screenshots posted since the first demo
  • Bugfix: The player injury counters were not reset after completing or quitting a game. Prior to this, if you selected the same team and player combo for the next game, the players would have the same number of injuries as the last game played. This bug actually exists in the unmodified NBA Jam TE ROM as well.

1st Demo Features (lazily copied from the readme)
  • 135 players from the 1992-93 roster, including stars that didn't make it into any official version of NBA Jam (Jordan is in)
  • Complete 1992 East and West All-Star teams (includes Magic Johnson!)
  • Player attributes now display correctly (10 is displayed when a player has a 10 in an attribute; corrections made to some players, eg. Stacey Augmon, Dennis Scott)
  • 1992-93 team colors/logos, except for the All-Star teams (the Eastern and Western Conference logos didn't exist until 1994)
  • Ability to cycle backwards through the player combos by pressing X or Y (on Team Selection and Substitution screens)
  • Modified Title Screen graphics/music
  • Many other cosmetic changes sprinkled here and there (i.e. Some players' pictures look better)
Keep in mind that this is only a demo. Many more features will exist in the final version.

Oh, and you need the (U)[!] version of the NBA Jam Tournament Edition ROM in order to play this hack.

EDIT: The readme now specifically says that you must patch this to a headerless ROM.
EPIC. I'm playing this right now, I'll let you know what I think.

Edit: You did a damn good job. The new characters are nice, and some things seem a bit simpler. Fun, but damn I forgot how anal the CPU could be, especially since it was Michael Jordan...
Hacks:
- 3+World (Cancelled - Download Available)
- Super Mario World Beta (2009)
What would REALLY be cool would be the inclusion of them mortal kombat characters that was exclusive to the saturn & arcade version.
sub-zero,scorpion & I think reptile...
If anyone needs help with custom Character GFX,PM me.
<Note> You will have to have a progress thread in order for me to work on GFX for you.No random requests.
Awesome! I'm so going to play this when I get home from school later. :D

Unfortunately, due to the lack of colors for the players' in-game head sprites and unique jersey colors for secret players, you wouldn't be able to tell Sub-Zero, Scorpion and Reptile apart. This is the same reason that Hugo(Charlotte's mascot) was brown instead of teal in several home versions. I suppose I could still try to make Raiden using one of the four big mascot heads in order to fit the hat. Even then, Raiden's hat would barely fit into a 16x16 square.

Come to think of it, I could make Noob Saibot. (lol)
Well, I just played through it, and I must say, you've done a great job, Mattrizzle. Just a couple of things I noticed:

1.

Shouldn't Barkley and Hornacek be on the opposite All-Star teams?

2. I was playing as the Eastern All-Star team, with Ewing and Thomas as my selected players, against the Knicks, who also used Ewing. I'm not sure if this is why, but when the game started, the sound glitched until I scored a basket.

Other than that, great work!

1. The rosters are accurate as of the start of the 1992-93 season. This means that since the 1993 All-Star Game didn't happen yet, the East and West teams from the 1992 All-Star Game are included. Charles Barkley and Jeff Hornacek got traded at the start of this season.

Also, according to Wikipedia, Magic Johnson retired near the beginning of the 1991-92 season after testing positive for HIV, but was still voted by fans as a starter for the All-Star Game. He later intended a comeback at the start of the 1992-93 season, but changed his mind yet again. For this reason, I didn't include him with the L.A. Lakers.

2. I'm not sure about this one. Both players can use the exact same team if they wanted to in the original game, so the condition you mentioned shouldn't be the problem. However, I have noticed some audio errors when using the rewind function in ZSNES, mainly in the form of long humming noises. Strange...
*bump*

I'm now converting this into an info thread.

Okay, Construct101, I'll eat my own words now...

All of this is possible due to two new assembly tweaks. The first addition allows each secret player to have his or her own custom uniform/skin color, while the second allows me to change which palette a player's head uses.

Sub-Zero and Reptile should be easy now as they're just color swaps with different abilities.
Wooooo!!!So when can I play a MK stylized version!I knew it could be done!Be sure to PM me!

I can't guarantee another demo version, so you'll have to wait until the final version is ready to be released. The exact date isn't set in stone.

It's already taken a long time for me to get this far, and there are at least two horrible bugs that have to be fixed.

EDIT:

Wow, Scorpion in an NBA Jam game, just pure awesomeness, Mattrizzle.
Awesome Hack, i've been hoping someone would hack this game, it's too bad a great game like this doesn't have a hacking community like tecmo super bowl and nhl 94.
I have tried this in Snes9x and ZNES 1.51, and none of them can boot up this game. I have it in the right country format, and patched. What is wrong with it?

Does your ROM have a header? I forgot to mention that this is supposed to be patched to a headerless ROM.

I bump this thread to show you some of the changes I've made to the graphics since the demo version. (Left picture: before; right: after)

Looks like you did some good work here Matrizzle.
(Wouldnt mind seeing team Mario,lool)
Looks stunning, Mattrizzle. I would like to see how far you could go with this.
Oh man. I'm itching to play this.
KIRBY DANCE!
BUG:

I played a few games and I noticed at the end the box score was always the same with the computer winning each time. The quarter by quarter scores were always the same. So even if I win the game, it will say game over and kick me back to the main screen.

QUESTION:

I'm curious how you've been able to edit the rom and add in players. I think it'd be cool to update it with current rosters, or even add myself into the game. Is this something you could put out a tutorial on how to do?
