Spike Tops

I have an icy cave level and I've placed three spike tops at one part of the level. Only one shows up, and he ends up suspended in mid-air, moving in a circle around nothing. Anybody know what causes this? If it makes a difference, I've placed them on a (gradual) slope.

a reason only one shows up is that they migh be too close to each other, another reason is that you may have too many enemies in that screen(press f3)

it might be in midair because it needs to be place on a flat surface,try that.

have in mind that in a level theirs a max of around 85 sprites,

I'm definitely NOT going over the sprite limit per screen/level, so that can't be it.

Spike tops work only on flat platforms, so placing them on a slope isn't going to turn out well. They also have problems showing up if you use the wrong sprite setting or if you have vertical scrolling enabled for unknown reasons. Try fiddling around with the settings for your level and see if that works.
As far as the vertical scroll enabled issue, as long as you come at them through a horizontal corridor that is both level with the spike tops from at least 1 screen in advance and does not affect the vertical scroll for said screens, they should show up with no issues. At least, they do for me when placed in vertical scroll enabled levels under said circumstances.
The problem of the vertical issue with the Spike Tops is located at $02BDA7:

LDA $D8,x ; check the vertical screen position
SEC
SBC $1C
CMP #$E0
BCC $BDB3
STZ $14C8,x ; disappear the sprite (this is the cause)

The routine was probably added to prevent sprite slowdown or something. You could simply NOP that routine, but I'm not so sure about the secondary effects. The Bullet Bill has a similar code like that.
Well, I couldn't make it work with the slope or with a series of flat steps, so I just put koopas in instead.

It could possibly be Sprite Limitations Try only putting 1 Spike Top only,oh and he has to be on FLAT ground.Hope that helps.:)
