Yeah. So, I decided to start on a hack *again*. Yep. Yesterday. I don't know what drove me, but I decided to do it anyway.
I'm not far yet, but I'm doing it anyway. Okay, so the plot... the plot? Oh yeah, just another cliché. Bowser kidnapped Peach and her guardian Toad, and the Koopalings took care of Luigi and a bunch of other Toads. Mario has to rescue them blah blah. But Bowser has come with a new armada of new enemies and villains, some of which are well known, and some of which are new, of which there is one... mysterious one.

So anyway, I'm probably planning to divide it in 6 parts. I won't tell which bosses appear in which world, but I can tell the main themes. There will be a bunch of new custom bosses. I'm not excluding custom sprites and ASM hacks either. I'll probably hold down on the custom blocks for a bit.

World 1 - Pit Caverns (Cave/Grass)
World 2 - Gruesome Grassland (Grass/Ghost)
World 3 - Dry Dry Seaside (Grass/Desert/Ocean)
World 4 - A Sky so Dark (Island/Volcano/Sky/Dark)
World 5 - Canadu's Backyard (Forest/Ice/Dark)
World 6 - Far Away Land (Dark)

I'll probably include the 24 hour clock and actually use it for stuff in this hack.

Anyway, the past 24 hours I've been focusing on level design and this is where I am at now:

Bushy Wasteland


Start of a cave, you can still see the sky and the bushes in the background.



Layer 1 auto-scroll + static Layer 2 = fun!



Mess with P-Switches.



*squish*



Press the switches. Or... don't?



Your classical Blue Koopa + shell combo.



Who can jump highest?



Oh yeah, forgot to mention. There are a lot of hidden (bonus) rooms. You'll probably be able to access one of them, but can you access them all?

I know, it looks kind of boring, but I'll spice it up. I'll make pictures of the OW later.

Well, it's looking really nice. I already see you HDMA'd rom. As far as suggestions... first off, don't put a ceiling on grassland levels (my personal opinion). It's okay once in a while for a split path section, but not the whole time, otherwise all your levels are like cave levels :(. I'd also like to see a little variation in either exgfx sets used or at least in palettes for that set (should be easy to do :P). Also, the slope in the blue koopa screenshot looks kinda drastic O_o

Anyway, hope you keep up work on this hack ^_^

The pallette of the Dino Rhino is good, and those cave looks a bit "vanilla level", but this isn't problem, of course. ;)

Hey Roy - This is looking really nice so far. I didn't even know you were thinking about having a new SMW hack, so this is exciting. My only suggestion would be to bump up those SMW default palettes to something a bit more in keeping with the other graphics you're using. Other than that, this looks great. Keep up the good work and let me know if I can help with anything.

Yeah, I'm going to scrap those graphics entirely anyway.

Will the Speed Meter have any purpose except showing your speed like in SMB3? Just wondering.

Overall, I think this is the start of an awesome hack. I just hope you don't cancel this either...

Because of space issues, I decided to make a second status bar. Yep. The extra space I have now is everything right from 'World 1' and below it.

('World 1' is just an example, I'll spice it up)

<3 That is awesome, Roy. I've been looking for more status bar space, and look, you've done it. I suppose it's set up like the original status bar, with addresses that equal values, and then during IRQ you use DMA to store those values to the bottom of the screen, yes? Ethier way, now you've really got me excited.

Pretty accurate, I use $7EC200-$7EC2FF for 4 rows of tiles (which consist of BOTH tile + its properties, unlike the original status bar, which didn't have 'dynamic' properties (YXPCCCTT)). It's a relatively simple hack, though.

Also, I don't want to create a SMB3-like system. I want more space, not fancier looking stuff... well, that too. But mostly more space.

Looking amazing, although I'm not too fond of the way you set up the dirt tiles of the ground - I think it would look better if you made MOST of the dirt tiles without those small sections of grass on them, and if you therefore used the ones with grass sections on them less frequently, so that it actually doesn't give you the impression that the same tile is repeating over and over again.

Other than that, I'm really liking what I see; I especially LOVED the fancy stuff you're adding to your hack via Layer 3. Looking forward to seeing more from you, especially the sorts of ASM-related things you'll come up next!
