Bonni's Quest

Standard

I like the first one best.
LOL, the second one is what I'm using for Gyonsuki's theme in Blackhole. I'd say the first one works better because it sounds more cutscene like, and it is more calm.
That cutscene looks pretty awesome Ladida! I love the font aswell. Didn't see any music stuff, but meh.

As a +, how did you get such a sexy girl in your layout, DAMN!

I like the second one better, more mystic, and in my opinion that would fit to the screen better. Although, it may be only because I'm a SoM fan, but whatever. :P Both are pretty great for the cutscene by the way.
I liked the first one at most, because it fits a cutscene more, but the second one is nice too.
Now I need to change my old avatar. Or not.
I think Rose and Ghost would fit the cut-scene better, as it's very mystic and mythical (like the storyline), and it's tune fits better with the Asian feel you said you were going for in the hack.
Nice cutscene graphics there.

Also, I personally think the second one is a little too upbeat for cutscenes, so I choose song 1.

Though, there are quite a few songs from Chrono Trigger that would probably work well. Maybe the Zeal theme.

But... does this site even have a "SMW version" of Zeal's theme?

Long time no see.

When the forums were being renovated and such, i decided to go try out sone snes games ive never played before. I got lotsa ideas from these games, so i'm deciding to implement these into the hack.

Namely, i'm deciding to give the hack a more RPG-ish style. It will still be platformer of course, just with RPG elements. For example, powerups will be collected once, and will stay with you forever. You can switch in the pause menu, etc. Similar to A Link to the Past. Speaking of a pause menu, I'm deciding on implementing one. I was gonna make it on the sprite layer, but i decided a layer 3 one would be alot c00ler :>

I still need to program it (and frankly, i have no idea how i'll go about doing it), but here's a mockup:

The background inside the boxes will be black, and there will be moar items there. Also, you won't be able to see the powerups you haven't found. Also, powerups wont go in the item box anymore, only items will. The current powerup will be shown in the before-useless Powerup Display :P The "other" will have miscellaneous stuff. (I also have to somehow DMA this to layer 3 like the status bar. Right now i have it inserted as an image)

I'd also like to say that i ported the rom yet again. This time it was for optimization reasons, and also i wanted to try out some new character GFX routine. The character GFX are now DMA'd, 32x32, and each powerup uses 2 banks of charcter graphics (this is 8 pages in YY-CHR)(However, i dont think i'll ever use both banks. At most i'll probably use 1)

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand that's about it :P
This hack is looking better and better with each update. The RPG-style menu is pretty original; I don't think I've seen another hack with that style, and it's a refreshing break from the norm. It's almost impossible to tell it was Super Mario World originally.

Here's hoping this hack keeps getting better!
Awesome, Ladida. My suggestion is to make it so you find the items in dungeons(aka castles), and use them throughout the dungeons/normal levels to unlock things.

It opens up the awesome idea of backtracking through old levels with newly acquired skills to open up new mandatory and/or optional passages to either progress or earn some sort of reward.

Yes, that's exactly what i had in mind (of course, this means I'll have to redesign the levels... D: )

And thanks you two :>
Looks wonderful, Ladida, I love the setup of the menu and it looks great in 2bpp. Man I wish I had your ASM knowledge, because this is almost exactly what I want in my hack D:
You still don't cease to amaze me, Ladida. The pause menu is a great idea, and I hope you do actually consider implementing it. If you don't, that's fine too. I agree with Spud Alpha, you should collect the items in castles, and use them to unlock secret exits and the like.

Overall, I can just barely tell that this is a SMW hack, and that if anything else was added, I highly doubt I'd be able to tell this is a SMW hack, period.

Good luck with whatever you're doing next! #w{=D}
Thanks everyone :>

Update:

Of course, it's not much of a graphical update. I'm still thinking of what to put in the OTHER section. Also, if i can, I will use windowing on the whole thing, so instead of the whole thing being black, only the inside of the boxes will be black. But for now this is fine.

The main thing is that i managed to program the cursor ^______________^
Also, the powerups are selectable. I still have to do alot more stuff though, so this is just a minor step :P
Well then, good luck with the rest! An RPG feel sounds good to me. It'll be the next best thing compared with Carol's plan for an "RPG" system for Brutal Mario.

In the other section you may want you put a 'Remaining life' part, showing you around how much more damage you can take in hits. The Game
You just lost.
lolbump

Decided to do stuff:

<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/s7aiy1aM9cI?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/s7aiy1aM9cI?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

This shows off the Pause menu. It works with layer 3 (i actually never even backed up layer 3, the menu just gets DMA'd)

Also, you may notice there is no music (I was using snes9x). After some thinking (read: right away), i decided to go ahead and use the msu1 chip by byuu. sucks for you zsnes/snes9x users this allows me to insert some songs i've wanted to insert, as well as possibly make it easier for me to make some custom compositions.

Comments?
Wow, this keeps getting better and better.
OMG this is awesome
Keep going on Ladida.
