The Forgotten Island

This hack can be downloaded here!

There is:

Custom Music
Custom Sprites
Some Custom Blocks
A Little ExGFX
Use of Certain Patches

Credits will be included with the game.

The Forgotten Island is an 18 level hack that is quite difficult, but not insanly hard of unfair. The plot centers around the unmentioned island in the top-left corner of the SMW main OverWorld, and the events that unfold around it two months after Bowser's death...

Photobucket

Mario and Luigi are still enjoying their vacation on a small isle. Mario decides to go to the beach and finds what appears to be a tape recorder. This is where the game starts.

Photobucket

This is the vacation island where you start your journey.

PhotobucketPhotobucket

The beginning of the first level. As you can see, I have changed the question block graphics.

Photobucket

Those blue blocks will teleport you to a different area if you have 3 Koopa Coins (the game's equivalent of Dragon Coins) or more. A Koopa Coin and a message block with new graphics are also shown.

Photobucket

A cave section in the first level. This hack makes use of ICB's Hammer/Boomerang sprites, so expect them in many places. Also, the custom status bar has no place for spare items because there are none in this game!

Photobucket

Near the first level's midway. Those green coins are anti coins, and they appear in many levels!

Photobucket

Your first look at the main OverWorld.

Photobucket

Here, in level 2 (The Goomba Sea, aptly named for it's use of Goombas and their odd behavior in the water) you have a choice; up or down. The theme of choosing your path comes quite often, and will make a large impact on the path you take later in the game.

PhotobucketPhotobucket

Much later in the level, you come across a special block that only breaks if you have star power. Though not many areas have this block, there are many places where you make starruns across dangerous terrain (though not unfair; they generally take advantage of the up or down theme mentioned earlier).

Photobucket

The start of level 3. Here you encounter the first of many "giant" type enemies that seem to have replaced most of the normal Koopas and other enemies.

Photobucket

Going down a specific pipe in level 3 leads to a fight area, where you must destroy all of the enemies on screen to move on via pipe. You will find many such areas in the game, usually involving one of 4 types of "brother" type enemies that rarely appear elsewhere.

Photobucket

The rare green blocks shown in this photo are another type of warp block that only warp you if you have 55 coins or more.

I also have some footage of two levels and the title screen, though certain message blocks aren't hit as to prevent plot spoilers.

The title screen.

The fourth level, Vedonium Mines, which holds a pivital point in both plot and gameplay aspects.

Pennan Woods, a level that comes before an important level on the longer path.

Hopefully this palette is better than the one in the later part of the video!

Any questions, comments, and suggestions gratly appreciated!

Vedonium Mines: It was very interesting, I really liked the palette of the lava, it was very well made, but some of munchers that you have to run across might be considered floating, becuase you can't tell if there is anything under them or not.

Pannan Woods: I REALLY dislike the FG palette, it was WAY to Green for me, it's like staring at Giant Lectuce. (no offense) Try the normal palette, but the rest was okay.

Other: I liked the custom blocks, especially the Message Block, but it could confuse people with the Green Switch Block.
Thanks for the feedback, LinksPetYoshi!

I think the munchers in Vedonium Mines should be fine (I actually do have blocks under them, just in the "invisible" row).

As far as the message block, green switch blocks only appear once, and you have to walk across them there (it's part of a secret area).

The deep green palette in Pennan Woods could use a touch up, though. I'll work on that.

Okay, but some people (mostly n00bs) might not know that. But it's fine. ;)

In your game? but still, it could be confusing once they're activated. But it's probably fine.

You might want to make some of the other palettes different too. Becuase Green BG, and Purple Pipes...*shivers*
I still think you should change the laser bros. music some how.
Footer huh? I never knew posts had feet o_o

Unfortuanatly, I don't know squat about custom music other than how to use Addmusic (though I have an idea as to what I might be able to change that particular level's music too).

(Just to let everyone else know, kirbydavy is my beta tester).

May I beta test too? Totally your disicion though.
Just so you know the Chill music in Pennan Woods repeats where it shouldn't. You should probaly use a different Addmusic or different song...
Anyways, I see some nice use of custom things, good level design, and the story's nice too. "I epecially like the way you cut off the message. It makes the player more interested to find out what happens and makes them want to advance more in the game."

Are you going to use any custom graphics at all, or is it a "vanilla" hack?

By any chance, does KC stand for King Corn? Becuase the thing on your Yoshi Coin looks like Corn.

What does the Yoshi Coin haveto do with all of this anyway?

(WTF! Corn?! ...I need therapy...)
Here's the answers to some of your questions.

Normally I would say yes, but development is in it's final stages (plus kirbydavy and I only found two bugs on this last test), so there's nothing left to test, really. Thanks for your support, though!

There are going to be very few custom graphics, and most of those are in blocks. However, with the use of custom music, sprites and some custom blocks, this hack isn't going to be vanilla at all.

No, KC stands for Koopa Coins, which I'm using instead of the generic Dragon Coins. Plus, certain levels have special warp blocks that only warp you if you have 3 or more.

I didn't notice that (it was working before...) However, I do have a backup song for that level, and I will replace it (that specific song only appears in two other areas, and can be replaced).

The Overworld is good, you have inserted custom blocks and sprites, nice level design, and nice GFX graphics.

Good looking hack so far.

Oh...but shouldn't you put a Koopa on the Koopa Coins? It would make it look more...errrr...graphicly intense...

Actually, that is a koopa's head (the eye flashes, so you might have mistook it for something else).

Well, now I have finished this hack, and I'll put the download for it here and at the top of this thread.

How come you can go two ways? They both have the same story.

And I can't find the Switch Palaces. I've only found the Red Switch.

(I'm probably going to find them as soon as I start playing again.)

But a good hack overall. I really liked the story from the secret exit version of Vedionium Mines. It explained the story better. But it doesn't really say WHERE mario finds the note. It just says that he found it. WHERE does he find it? You should clarify that in the hack.
