1=0.999999....

0.999 forever equals 1

Do you believe this, or do you think otherwise. I dont really know what to believe...

The proof there makes a whole bunch of sense, and I think it makes sense, too; otherwise, how would things like 1/3 + 1/3 + 1/3 (0.3333... + 0.3333... + 0.3333...) equal 1?
I didn't read all that crap on Wikipedia, but judging by the sheer amount of crap on that page, I believe you.
Hmmmmm...
Is tempting to believe you...

It's really easy to prove that is indeed the case:

x = 0.999...
10x = 9.999...
10x - x = 9.999... - 0.999...
9x = 9
x = 1

EDIT: Perhaps I should have read the wiki article before posting, as it seems to have that exact proof... Oh well.

This is old stuff.
But yeah, it's true, it's proven and it's generally accepted.
Kind of reminds me of the demotion of Pluto as a planet. ;_;

Well, one could say a number infinitely close to 1 is 1 itself.

Can one say 1.0000000000000........1 is 1?

I believe it, because the proof is there and there is no use to argue with proof.

Is that 1 + 10^-∞? If so, yes, that is equal to 1, as 10^-∞ = 1/10^∞ = 1/∞ = 0. Besides, that number doesn't make much sense at all... If there are infinitely many zeroes at the start, where is the 1 to be placed?

0.99 gets rounded up to 1. =p

This is a thing that's happening, now. Achievements in old video games.
Thank you for the layout, Erik557.
Man, I wish this would've worked. Oh well.

Does this just mean that there is no such thing as the value 0.999999999.....

like, how is that possible?

maybe there are double values.
just like ther are double meanings like soda POP and i heard a POP.

I don't think so. If so how come you have to write 0.999 with a little bar over it to specify that it is a repeating decimal? Wouldn't you just always right 1 instead if that were the case?

Pretty crazy stuff. Math isn't always right. For example, imaginary numbers. Crazy.

Or what if 1/3 isn't actually 0.33333etc?
fuck yeah meowingtons
