Featured Hacks (Closed until further notice)

Link Thread Closed

There used to be a thread for this at one point actually.

Either way even with the standards back then, a hack still had to be beatable. Keeping it up there will just make our current standards look low.

yeah, and mods closed it because it was a stupid idea in the first place. Personally I agree the hack should be defeatured, but this isn't the place to discuss it.
And that's why I support the idea of a "Legacy Hacks" section-- for all the hacks that were once popular (including Super Demo World /3/TLC, the Super Mario Infinity hacks, Super Challenge World, The Forever Mystery, and various others) but no longer meet current standards (and shouldn't be featured so they don't set an example to new hackers), as well as hacks like TSRP1 that were replaced by an upgraded version.

That is, hacks could be removed from featured status if they don't meet current standards, but any hack that was featured at some point would be guaranteed a place in that section.

Not to derail the thread, but since I've just recently been thinking about a legacy hacks section myself, I'll just say I agree with the idea too. The featured hacks section should be for hacks that are currently perceived to have high quality. I have no issues with keeping hacks that reflect the development/history of the community, but I think they should be separated out.

Besides, when I think (from the point of view of a new user) about the fact that over 100 hacks are featured, it seems disorienting. Which hack out of these 100 should I play? Are they all really about the same quality? If I'm disappointed by one of them, what next? Also, too high a ratio of featured hacks to total hacks can imply low quality standards...right now it's about 1 out of every 5. I'm not necessarily saying that's excessive, but it might be something to keep in mind...?

I would like to nominate new two hacks. Here they are:

- Super Mario World - The Lost Levels - By LunaStarshine
- Adventure Land Legend of Stars by flareblade and some numbers after his username xD

SMWTLLBLS is the best vanilla hack I've played. It's more on the difficult side, so I liked it. Playing it without savestates was even better. This hack has long levels, cool design, and I see that authors of this hack also thought about hackers' weak point - overworlds. There are perspective errors, but they put effort into the OW, and it looks ok. I believe they took a lot of time for the OW. And some extras, the fact that it's a vanilla hack doesn't tell us that it's boring. It has a lot of cool features like to find the password in the world 2 ghost house you need to go to another level, get the password, go back, and find the secret exit. If you'll play and like this hack, don't be jealous and vote for featured! :)

2. ALLOS was a demo with 7 exits, but there are actually a lot of demo hacks featured, and some that should be featured but aren't, and one of those that should be featured but aren't is ALLOS. This is a normal hack with levels, castles, worlds, switches, but it has a lot of custom sprites, and you just need to enter the first level and you see how many effort this guy took for this hack. Level design is impressive and extremely interesting. This should be definitely featured and I hope it will be.
...Huh?
I would like to nominate "Super Pika Land Ultra (Final Version)" for featured status.

As stated in my review, I thoroughly enjoyed the hack.

The combination of vanilla level design, and some graphical and musical modifications gave a mixed feeling to the levels, and it was balanced out; Not totally vanilla-feeling, but not crammed with external content. This provided a refreshing gameplay experience. There was some humor in text boxes, which also added pleasure to levels. "Empty Hut" and the various switches had some funny, if dry, messages.

Then there's the overworld, which is wonderfully detailed, and has nice use of water. There is variable terrain and decoration/features without overdoing them, and the large icy rock made me lol. As for the endgame (not bonus world) map, words cannot explain.

And then there's the superb graphics. >Superb!< The Pikachu/Raichu graphics were decently drawn, and the "title screen" was cute. As for the vanilla and Map16 graphics use; utterly amazing and the best I've seen in several areas. I mean, there were level with varying colors that weren't eye searing, the mystical effects of the bonus world, and even a level or two with overworld graphics for the layout! In terms of eye pleasing, "Checkered Path's" patterns, "Pastel Plains'" tinted landscape, and ALL of the castles and forts were great looking, considering they're buildings.

All in all, I even said in my PM review (I beta tested) that this hack should be featured, and I sure hope it does.
(No current projects, lost them all.....)

I too would like to nomniante "Super Pika Land Ultra!" to be featured.

The Vanilla graphics are impressive. I love the fact that the author used the SMW GFX to make new graphics and the MAP16 used throughout is outstanding. I especially loved the Twilight Plateau level which makes excellent use of the SMW Overworld Graphics and the Checkered Path was very original. I don't think I've ever seen levels like that in a Vanilla hack before. The Pikachu & Raichu player graphics are a very nice touch. I also really like the Yoshi Coin graphic replacements. The Overworld design is fantastic. I did not see any perspective errors anywhere. The giant iceberg in the lake was one of the most impressive looking objects I've ever seen in a Vanilla OW.

The level design is excellent. Not once did I ever get bored. The difficulty was balanced. The hack starts off easy and then the difficulty increases as you work through each world.

The music tracks used fit perfectly. There was never a moment where I came across a track that sounds out of place.

Overall, I'd say this is not only one of the best hacks of 2011 but possibly of ALL TIME too!
I would want to name Marios Story from PaperMario64 to become featured.

it is an enough short hack, but it has a fantastic level design, in fact you never annoy yourself when you play this hack, the graphics is amazing, even if it is a little bit repetitive and the turtle is glitched.
The overworld is fantastic under every point of view and the music that this hack contains it is very beautiful to be listened.

P.s: Sorry for my bad English.

I'd like to nominate Mario's Long Traveling by Teo17 to get featured.

First of all, the level design was excellent. Very fresh design, and unique in every level. Not just boring koopas and goombas, but use of custom sprites here and there gave just the extra feeling of perfection. The graphics mixed in pretty nice and were all the same style, which is always nice to have. It felt like you build your level design around the graphics, which gave the result of fun level design. The musical selections were good; everything did fit in and nothing was too boring. The overworld was more than excellent, as it had an amazing palette and different angles and loads of nice combinations of land and decoration.

Overall: Just an amazing hack which shines a little more than the rest. So, a featured status would be a good first step.
Me, I vote for Mario's Long Travelling demo from Teo17. The story is good enough, but this hack isn't a story hack, it shines for, well, everything else. The levels are of long lenght, witch I like, and they are pretty unlinear, with a lot of secrets and sublevels. The music gave me, at a lot of occasions, a great feel of nostalgia, with SMRPG songs and other games I played a million times in my childhood, witch I like a lot. The graphics style is consistent and he often mix custom tilesets together and it gives a great feel too, they are all in a cartoonish-but-not-so-cartooonish consistent style. Also, as I was one of the 3 beta testers, I know worlds 2 and 3, and I must say secrets are VERY well hidden and there are a lot of secret exits, I just plain loved it. Also, the overworld: it is one of the best, if not THE best overworld I've ever seen. It has some custom blocks and sprites too, but they are not abused, custom sprites sometimes, mixed with normal ones instead of having only custom sprites in some parts and then the normal ones re-appears. And, err- I think I have enought.
Okay, Mario's Long Traveling is now featured (it got 3 votes). Congrats, Teo17, and keep up the great work.
I'm going to nominate two hacks for the featred status. Here they are:

- Mario's Redrawn Adventure Demo 1.25 (second vote)
- Super Pika Land Ultra (third vote)

Mario's Redrawn Adventure: I would like to vote for featured. This hack is very enjoyable and I recommend it for you. The level design is just simple and amazing. Unlike other difficult hacks, this hack isn't hard and you should be able to beat it if you aren't good at playing. There are some cool ideas, and levels are very well built. I found all secrets myself, they are very well hidden and finding them is very fun. I made an experiment and changed the GFX of a random level to normal SMW gfx and it still was very enjoyable and fun to play, even without redrawn GFX, and you shouldn't downrate this hack just because it's all redrawn. A great use of graphics made this hack even better, but the overworld could be better. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't really great. The land could be more mixed, and for a great hacker like Dakress perspective errors? :( An advice: don't read my tutorial on perspective errors, it won't help you much. :) Learn how to avoid them and this hack is very close to perfection. Some featured hacks are a lot worse than this hack, and even this makes so this hack is a little underrated and a featured status would be a very good choice for this. Even though it's a demo, it actually isn't a world 1 or 2 demo so it at least has a solid part of the game to play. :) Great Job Dakress! :D

Super Pika Land Ultra: This hack is very close to the featured status and it's just good enough to be featured. I'm not saying that this is different in some way, but it's one of the rare hacks that are unique than others. The first thing that let you have fun with it is the custom character. It's cool to go away from Mario at least in some hacks. The level design is very good in this hack overall and I like it very much. It represents some new things in levels, and the levels are challenging, which is just fun. "Featured hack is a hack that is just very well made or has something unique in it." I don't need any other words to describe why this hack should be featured, and is going, because I'm voting third for it. As to the overworld, as everywhere, it's very unique and I just loved it! :) But the third world could have a lot better overworld, just saying. :( Overall, a lot new things you can meet in this hack, and the best in it is that, that it's almost a vanilla hack and represents all those unique things! :D It's not easy to make something like it from vanilla parts of SMW! :) Just a great job on this hack, this is actually featured! :)

Also, thanks for featuring my hack, and, Hadron, you spelled "Traveling" wrongly. There's no "travelling" in the hack's name anymore, I just didn't know how to spell it when I was releasing Demo 1.0. :)
...Huh?
Okay, Super Pika Land Ultra is featured now. Congratulations, Doownayr89.
I nominate "Mario's search for the 8 jewels" by Mawwo7...

Everyone with good point at hacks - please vote it...

why I nominate?

1. there are few hacks I finish easily, and fewer I finish tons of times - this hacks is one of them...

2. I don't know other hacker who has smw edition of all of the dkc series custom music

3. regular hacks of Mawwo7 have 30-40 levels, this hack has 100 levels!

4. Mawwo7 - you tried to nominate it by yourself - and failed... now I'm doing that instead of you...

that's all!

Legend of the Rift definitely deserves featured status. Foursword4 has put three years of hard work into the hack, and has built a solid one. The hack has a rather complex and intriguing plot which is cleverly told through scrolls written by a certain character and the occasional cutscene. Luckily, the story elements are never so heavy that they become a burden on the gameplay of the hack. Level design is quite nice as well. Levels are of healthy length and contain some interesting gimmicks, but they are used sparingly which help the levels feel natural and don't make said gimmicks feel forced. Graphics are for the most part well-selected. While toward the beginning of the hack, the graphic choices aren't the most eye-catching, they are definitely all well-chosen and do not clash, plus some really impressive custom graphics are used later on.

There you go, please feature, FS4 deserves it! =)
Seconding, of course. I've watched it grow from the get go and not only does it show a great progression of both skill and difficulty, the levels themselves are fun to play and creatively made. It is certainly one of the better completed hacks the site has seen in the past while, so .. yep.
Thirding. This hack kept me entertained for about 2-3 hours straight (which is rare btw). I loved the usage of graphics, secrets weren't so ridiculously difficult to find, and the reference to Eversion in that one castle was simply so well executed. :D Once realizing the meaning of the ending of the hack, it actually brought tears to my eyes (literally).

I can't really find the right words, but I have to say: this hack is a great piece of "art"!
My blog. I could post stuff now and then

My Assembly for the SNES tutorial (it's actually finished now!)
I'd like to vote for JUST BLOB to be featured.

I loved the level design here, it was great. Even though it had some great ASM gimmicks in it, it still felt very polished and professional, and the graphical style was consistent throughout which was great.

Secondly, I loved the OW, despite how simplistic it may seem. It was the overall polish and feel of the hack that makes it so good, because it feels like it was made by Nintendo.

This is why I'm nominating it to be featured. I'm sure DutchLuigi deserves this for all the hard work he put into this, even if it is only 6 levels long.
I'm going to vote for Chocolate Flavor. The level design was wonderful, and even though it doesn't have too many secrets, they're hidden pretty well. I haven't even found the secret exit yet. The graphics and music are brilliant as well. I would've enjoyed a custom boss though, even though the BIg Boo is still a pretty good boss...

Edit: Senjan just PMed me that Tales of Nean was finally fixed. (insert confetti) Play it now or else. :D

This hack is brilliant. The graphics and music he chose were very good, and, most importantly, the hack is very fun to play, so much better then the original "Super Senjan Realm" I randomly found on YouTube. It uses a nice touch of custom stuff while still maintaining levels with a vanilla feel. This has turned into one of the best hacks I have ever played, and Senjan really deserves the featured status. :3
Good fucking bye.
I second the vote for Just Blob by TheDutchLuigi.
This hack is simply amazing under every point of view, the level design is professional, it seems a bit repetitive but it always likes.
The graphics is superb despite is alone very well of the little balls and the background and the foreground fits.
The overworld seems classical but with this new graphics it is unique, it seems to play in a notebook.
The dense music always is good and there is also THE FINAL COUNTDOWN!
the ASM there is and is good, what other to be said? Only that is one of the best hacks that I have ever played.
