MindTrap

Hello, and welcome to MindTrap, where things are seldom as they seem. I am your host, Ultimaximus, and I'll be asking the questions. Whosoever gets the most points shall win and take home the gold! But be warned, if I so much as have a hint of suspicion of cheating, you will immediately be disqualified!

What a great use of my 2000th post, yeah? I hope this gets more activity for the FoS, and doesn't get dropped like my waste of a 1000th post.

Essentially, I have a game called MindTrap. It has cards with tricky riddles that I will be posting here. The first to answer correctly gets the points, and the next question is posted. If after 24 hours a question is left unanswered, I shall post the answer and take it down.

There are 2 rounds. The first round has 3 categories: Normal, Hard, and Very Hard, which are worth 1, 2, and 5 points respectively. The second round's questions are all 2 points each, and have 3 categories: "Generic", "Magic", and "Death, Crime, & Deceit".

Rules:

  • You may not cheat (I assume you know what cheating is)

  • You may only have one guess per question per post (Meaning you can have 2 guesses for the 2 questions in a single post, but never two guesses for the same question in one post. When I say that you are incorrect, you may post again.)

  • You may not question the answer

  • You may not question the category placement

  • You must explain your answer if possible (To prevent cheating)

  • Question:

    Normal (1)
"What five-letter word becomes shorter when you add two letters to it?"

    Very Hard (5)
"If someone said to you, "I will bet you $1 that if you give me $2, I will give you $3 in return", would this be a good bet for you to take? Explain."

World Community Grid: Thread | Team

Normal: Short. Add an E and an R and it becomes the word shorter.

Very Hard: No, accepting would be a bad idea. If you give the other person $2 and he refuses to pay, he would only need to give you $1 for losing the bet, and you would be down $1.

    Question:

    Normal (1)
"A high speed electric train is travelling southeast at 90 kilometers per hour. The wind is blowing westward at 30 kilometers per hour. In what direction will the smoke from the engine blow?"

    Very Hard (5)
"If a third of six is three, what would half of twenty be? Explain."

World Community Grid: Thread | Team

Normal: There would be no smoke. The train is electric.

    Very Hard: 15. Normally, 1/3 of 6 is 2 and 2 multiplied by 1 & 1/2 is 3. Normally 1/2 of 20 is 10, and 10 multiplied by 1 & 1/2 is 15.
Correct! I have also fixed an error: Normal is worth 1 point, not 2.

    Question:

    Hard (2)
"A worm is at the bottom of a forty meter hole. It can crawl upwards at the rate of four meters in one day, but at night, it slips back three meters. At this rate, how long will it take the worm to crawl out of the hole?"

World Community Grid: Thread | Team

37 days. After the 36th night, it is 36 meters from the bottom, allowing it to reach the top on the 37th day.

    Question:

    Hard (2)
"If a block weighs eight kilograms plus half a block, what is the weight of a block and a half?"

    Very Hard (5)
"A child is born in Boston, Massachusetts to parents who were both born in Boston, Massachusetts. This child is not an American citizen. How could this be possible?"

World Community Grid: Thread | Team

    Hard: 24 kilograms.

Very Hard: Hm... Is the hospital's name "Boston, Massachusetts"?

    --------------------

    Hard: Explain.

    Very Hard: Nope.

The points are up for grabs if you answer properly first!

World Community Grid: Thread | Team

Is this the explanation you're looking for?

    (b stands for a block's weight)

    b = 8 + b/2 | Multiply by 2
    2b = 16 + b | Replace 2b with b+b, which means the same
    b + b = 16 + b | Subtract b
    b = 16

    So b equals 16. Since we're looking for 1,5 * b, the answer is 24.

(Edit: Fixed a your / you're issue. Never thought this would happen to me. >_>)

Yes, well, a simple "8 must be half of the block's weight" would have worked...

    Question:

    Hard (2)
"A tree doubled in height each year until it reached its maximum height over the course of ten years. How many years did it take for the tree to reach half its maximum height?"

    Very Hard (5)
"A child is born in Boston, Massachusetts to parents who were both born in Boston, Massachusetts. This child is not an American citizen. How could this be possible?"

Heh. I guess I always do things the complicated way...

Hard: 9 years. Since the tree doubles its height each year, one year before it reaches its maximum height, it reaches half of it.

    Question:

    Normal (1)
"Before Mount Everest was discovered, what was the highest mountain on earth?"

    Very Hard (5)
"A child is born in Boston, Massachusetts to parents who were both born in Boston, Massachusetts. This child is not an American citizen. How could this be possible?"

World Community Grid: Thread | Team

Normal: Mount Everest. It doesn't matter if it was discovered or not. It was still the highest mountain on Earth.

Very Hard: The child was born before the United States of America was truly founded on July 4, 1776.
    Hm, correct!

    Question:

    Normal (1)
"There is a certain crime, that if it is attempted, is punishable, but if it is commited, is not punishable. What is the crime?"

    Very Hard (5)
"Can you translate the following into a sentence?"

    1 0 0 2 0 4 1 8 0

World Community Grid: Thread | Team

Normal: Suicide. It's against the law, but if it's already committed, you can't punish the person because he/she's already dead.

    Very Hard: No, you cannot...
If you couldn't, then it wouldn't be a question, now would it?

Very Hard: No, I can't. At least not right now.

Normal: My mother, since my father's sister is related to my father, who married my mother (that's the best I can explain it).

    Very Hard: Still can't.

1: When I first thought about this, I thought aunt through marriage, because your father's sister could've had another brother that got married, but then again, her brother (which would be your father) could've gotten married and that would've been your mother. And your mother is closer.

    2: Yes, yes I can.
