New music submission rules - Updated 11/25/07

Ok, let's face it. I have been extremely nice and grateful to this point with music. I've accepted music that sounds sub-par - I have even submitted music myself that could be much better.

Things are about to change dramatically.

I am going to go through the music section and delete a good 40-50 songs that sound bad, or could have improvements made to them. There are some that sound really good, but need trimming. I'll leave those ones there, because chances are they were created before we learned about the l command and stuff.

Here are the new guidelines for submitting music. Every single song MUST include these where possible.

1. The TXT file must be under 6 KB. Anything over that is gone.
2. The SPC must be working.
3. You MUST make use of the l## command to reduce file size even further. Use it at the top of the song at a bare minimum, but if you really want to get fancy, use it at the beginning of every sound channel for even more file size reduction.
4. If there are obvious places where a loop can be used, use it. If I see places where the song could be looped, but it is not done, I will reject it. I don't mean little notes, like if theres two e32e32 that aren't looped or something like that .. but if I see a whole channel that isn't looped and takes up a good 2 KB, then it's gone.
5. The song will be instantly rejected if there is an octave error. Octave errors are when the song uses too high of an octave (o6 is the highest) or too low (<o1)
6. Please choose good instruments, or instruments that sound slightly close to the originals. I get tired of hearing a Yoshi drum where it is obvious a steel drum can be used. I understand this isn't always easy .. but just experiment until you get things right.
7. MAKE IT SOUND LIKE THE ORIGINAL. I'm tired of accepting things out of pity that are way too fast, sounds all over the place, or just plain hurts my ears.

NEW:

8. If your song is under 2 KB, I will approve it if it does not contain the l command or loops, as that is small enough. However, if it goes over that, even by one byte .. even by one BIT .. even by one nanopixel of a character, it will be denied.

That's it for the rules. Read all of these, follow them, and you'll be fine. With that, I am going through and deleting a whole bunch of songs. If you have any questions about these rules, post them here. If you have any questions about music hacking in general, please post them in the music hacking thread in the SMW Hack Discussion forum.

Finally, I will not be PMing each and every person with each and every song I delete. If you notice your song is missing, you may PM me and ask me what was wrong with it. Flaming me or filling your PM with "fuck you fuckity fuckfuckfucksdhfasbgf" will get you banned. Ask me what was wrong, and I'll tell you, that way you can improve and re-submit it. Everyone wins!

Have a nice day.
Finally, no more sucky music. I hated downloading a song, and then have it be too terrible to use.

I don't know anything about making songs. I can't even get custom music into my ROM correctly.

Why not make a section for those "Songs"
Some may not be an exact remake, but some people such as myself might appreciate those songs.

Finally, I heard too many of these "songs" you described
and they suck. I am happy now.
I wonder what a HFD opcode would do in ASM...
I haven't downloaded any music from the music section yet, so it's good that I won't be caught up in those terrible songs. :D

I deleted songs that everyone would think sounds terrible. Songs that at least sound somewhat good or not ear piercing are still there. In total, I think I got rid of about 21-25.

Mind sharing with us which songs those were?

Uh, whichever ones I deleted I guess. A couple I remember are:

-DKR - Darkmoon Caverns (it just sounded off in a lot of places)
-SM64 - Bob-Omg Battlefield (way too fast, most of the melody missing)
-SM64 - Jolly Roger's Bay (jumpy and everything)
-Mario/Luigi PiT - E. Gadd's Theme
-PMTTYD: Rogueport Sewers

Various ones that just sucked overall and no one would use.
Heh, the last two were mine :P They did kinda suck though.
Well, I think thse rules are good, it'll help clean out the music section. :D
Bring on the remakes!

I would LOVE to hear a bit of the Planet Terror score where the girl's blowing shit up with her leg in a hack.

Also, if I ever get into this, expect a lot of Tool and System from me. Maybe some of the techno tracks in some of my games if I really feel ambitious...
Slightly well-versed on everything LinuxI'll beta-test your hack. Find me here!
Luckly any of my songs got deleted :P. Anyways, I'm using the l## command in my latest songs. People, use it, it'll dramatically reduce the size of your songs.

what does l## do?

BRING ON THE CLEAN MUSIC ^_^
l## does this.

It probably would have been better to link to the post, like this. :P
fixed.

Something that annoys me is that when you play the song, it sometimes starts in the middle and can be easily fixed by the author. Take that into consideration.
