Hack Rating Revision

This came up in a thread talking about the overall quality of the average SMW hack.

As it is now, the way hacks are rated is a very ineffective way of giving information about the quality of the hack. There is no criteria for what constitutes a good or bad hack. Users have the option to give a full review, but this is rarely done and only gives the perspective of a single person.

A much better rating system would be to require users who wish to rate a hack to take a small survey about the hack. This survey would ask the user their opinion about various areas of the hack (such as level design, ASM, music, graphics, etc.) with three possible answers for the questions.

Sample Question: In your opinion, how good was the level design in "Hack Name"?

() Good
() Average
() Bad

Each answer would be worth a certain value (the exact number would depend on the number of questions), and different questions could be weighted differently (For example, level design should probably count for more than custom music)

The average overall score would become the hack's rating. Individual questions would also be averaged from each rating to give more detailed information about the hack. Certain optional aspects of the hack could be disabled from the survey for hacks that do not contain these things (ASM for example). The hack creator would have to ask for this when submitting his/her hack.

Sample rating:

"Hack Name"
Overall Rating: 6.5
Level Design: 7.3
Overworld: 6.6
Fun: 7.4
Music: 8.2
Graphics: 5.4
Plot: 3.8
ASM: N/A

(This could perhaps be presented as a horizontal bar graph to give a visual representation, color coordinated with high scores being green and lower ones being red.)

The specifics of this suggested revision would need to be decided by the forum staff (How many questions the short survey would contain? what areas of a hack should be judged? How much is each area weighted?). This would give a consistant system to determine the quality of each hack as well as a more detailed report about where the hack is strong and where it is weak.

Users could still review hacks in order to give their perspective withr reasons.

It's called "a review".

Instead of making reviews and ratings separately, we should make a system like the one MFGG utilizes. You have a review sheet that has different sections (like Graphics, Music, Gameplay etc.) and you have to write your opinions about them. After you've written something about everything, you'll give the hack a final score. Then the review is sent to a moderator/admin who can either accept the review or throw it in the dumpster.

I know it would create a bit more work but at least it would actually be a working system. What with the "reviews" about "HOW DO I CLEAR LEVEL" and the "ratingfags" (hurr i giev 1 cuz im kewl i dont pley hakss).

A lot of potential rating systems are being considered for SMWC 2.0. You can actually see three of them in the Hacks section currently. Those are the A, B and C ratings. I can't tell you offhand what each of them means but they're all being test-driven to see if they might be better solutions for the future ratings system. Ask Kieran, or wait until he replies here, about what each one does.

NamelessProtagonist, that's an outstanding idea. I love it! I think this should certainly be considered for SMWC 2.0. One of the best ideas for ratings. It gives people a chance to see the average rating in all aspects of the game before playing it.

A review is one person's detailed opinion about the various aspects of a hack. It can be useful, but one person could very well be an idiot and if someone wants a quick rating of it, all of the reasons the reviewers give are unnecessary. A small forum survey could be used to give an average from the opinions of everyone who cared enough to vote without making the forum staff go through hell.

Hmm, didn't know about that... At the very least my idea is another one for the forum staff to consider.

Ugh... I typed out this post and forgot to post it.

Anyway,
The hack system needs to be changed. What FFFFFFUUUUU- said is a good idea. It would stop downvoters, and make people give reasons why a hack is bad so people can improve it. It sucks because there are some cases in the hacks section with hacks that have bad ratings, but good reviews.

Examples:
Here.
Here.
More.
My hack.
Even more.

I'll stop there, but there are more.

And while I'm at it, why is this hack even there. I thought this was against Hack Submission Guidelines?

Case closed.

The A, B and C ratings are different algorithms we are trying out. They work by finding an interval where most of the votes are placed, and then weighting the votes that fall inside the interval more than those that fall outside. This is an attempt to reduce the impact of downvoting (and upvoting, for that matter). Of course, no system is stronger than the people you expose it to.
How about a basic quiz before being allowed into the Hacks section, such as "Which is better? *pic of Kaizo* or *pic of vannila hack that doesn't suck*", and "Does custom stuff justify poor level design?".

Smallhacker made it I suppose because it isn't utter crap like most glitch hacks.

Sounds like a really good idea, but couldn't the same be done with my idea? It would both weed out the downvoters and give a more detailed rating of the hack's strengths, weaknesses, and overall quality. Its definatly something to consider.

So are most of the reviews everywhere but they are still regarded as HIGH N' MIGHTEE.

IGN, for example, is pure shit but everyone will still care about their stupid little reviews. WHEE IMAGINEZ BABY PARTY IS FUN WHEE

And besides, your rating system would be exactly the same except without the actual helpful information.

No, my system would be the average of everyone's opinions, possibly weighted using similar algorithms to the ones Kieran mentioned being tested.
