Mario and the mystery of jamo island(demo)

Reason:

IPS is glitched, Please test your IPS patches before submitting!
NAME: Super Boss World 1.0
AUTHOR: weegeefan765
DESCRIPTION:
A nice short rom hack with all the bosses.

p.s. Just because the title says "1.0" doesn't
mean I'm gonna make an update

cherry cool-aid!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

REASONS FOR REMOVAL:

The patch did nothing when applied to a clean SMW ROM. Remember, first you choose the clean ROM, and then the modified one.

NAME: Island of the Damned (Demo)
AUTHOR: HighVoltageGamer
DESCRIPTION:
This is a demo of an upcoming hack I am making!

It's my first hack, so please don't expect Kaizo or MKM!

The Level Name says Land of the Damned, I know!

REASONS FOR REMOVAL:

The patch is broken. Make sure to use a clean ROM when creating an IPS file. To check that a ROM is clean, use the Clean ROM Verifier.

Also, one of your screenshots contained stacked Munchers, which are not and have never been allowed here. Might I suggest reading the Hack Submission Guidelines?

Reasons for Removal
-------------------/

Crazy Koopa
-----------/

..Ooh, Wiggler's body was cut up. Maybe you can help him by changing the sprite memory settings?

A lot of slowdown, due to the huge amount of springboards that you have.

Yellow Switch Palace
--------------------/

When you place a slope on a solid tile, you can go through the slope.

Blind jumps are not good.

Mario is holding an invisible P-Switch; mess with the sprite memory settings to fix this. If you don't fix it...

...then enemies can give a cheap hit; the bomb was invisible.

Bramble Scramble
----------------/

Just wondering, but why did you use underwater music here?

Clearing this jump is a bit of a pain; can you soften the difficulty here a little?

It seems that someone has been eating their veggies lately. Please change the sprite memory.

It's not too big a deal, but the palette of the shooters are strange, and the bottoms have been cut.

Upon entering this door...

I go into a level 0/100 bonus room and am forced to wait out the timer. Instant removal.

Dark Cave
---------/

Why would you need a springboard when you can just go back up the hole to the left?

Change the "for" to "to" to fix the sentence.

#1 Iggy's Castle
----------------/

Me thinks you forgot to change the name.

Why am I swimming in red-hot lava? And worse, when I try to swim over to the other passage, I die randomly.

This hack was alright, but the thing that had killed it off was the random bonus room level. If the door was right next to a screen boundary, move it over and it should fix the problem. Also, fix the other problems and it should be accepted next time.

This hack does not meet the following Hack Submission Guidelines:

Originally posted by Hack Submission Guidelines

2. Blatant level edits will not be accepted.
Use CTRL+DEL to remove old SMW levels. (104, C5, C7, and 3 are exempt from this.)

3. No graphical glitches!
Errors such as garbled sprites/FGs/BGs, message box text screwing up layer 3 items, cutoff tiles, and general graphical ugliness are frowned upon. Also, don't forget about glitches such as sprite memory issues - the graphics of the sprite will 'disappear', but the sprite will still be there, and can unfairly hurt Mario.

7a) Keep it fair, and keep the hack at a legitimate difficulty!
i.e. Avoid things like death after the goal, blind jumps, forced damage, excessive enemies, places where you can get permanently stuck, excessive 3-UP moons, etc.

7b) The player should be able to identify everything's behavior before touching it. The player should not have to do something illogical, like jump in lava, to complete a puzzle. If something acts "unusual", inform the player ahead of time.

9. Quality level design
Your hack has a much higher chance of being accepted if the level design is fun. Conversely, if the level design is found to be lacking then a little cutoffness may be enough to push the hack into deletion.

[?] Miscellaneous Helpful Hints
If I moderated your hack, there was apparently a 90 percent chance it was rejected.

This patch transformed my copy of SMW into a full copy of Super Mario All-Stars, which included your hack as a replacement for the "SMW" part of it. Why is this bad? Well, the whole point of IPS patches is to make it so that no illegal material is distributed; IPS patches contain ONLY the data that the HACKER created, and the "original SMW" portion of the hack is provided by the ROM that the person downloading the IPS patch is assumed to own. By making your hack in All-Stars and then basing your IPS patch off the original SMW, it makes your IPS patch not just modify a SMW ROM into your romhack, but also literally hands out SMB1, SMB2, SMB3, and SMB Lost Levels along with it, since it adds all that to any SMW ROM it's patched to.

It's kind of hard to explain, but basically what in short it is this: if you make your hack by editing Super Mario All-stars with Lunar Magic, then use a Super Mario All-stars ROM as a base when making the IPS Patch, and not a SMW ROM!. You could be banned for this if it happens again.

Whew....okay, now that that wordy explanation is out of the way...Here are some of the other (many) reasons for removal.

Unedited entry text + horrible palettes.

messy overworld + horrible palettes

horrible palettes + horrible palettes

This wall killed me for absolutely no reason. Many other tiles in the hack do this too. In fact, no message box says this, but it seems like some kind of unspoken rule that anything red in the hack, no matter what it looks like, hurts Mario.

Accessible Test level on the overworld, and with glitched BG + bad palettes.

By going down here and then back up, I got trapped on an empty tile and had to reset. Also, I might mention that it's weird that all your levels are accessible from the start and unlock nothing for completing them.

Ever since the new paint job, Bowser's minions have felt considerably less manly.

More bad palettes...

...along with horribly cheap jumps like this and a time limit that is near running out already on only the second screen of the stage!

Kaizo Mario World was NEVER a good role model to copy.

Worthless text + horrible palettes

Nothing acts like you think it would in this hack, and there are no messages or guides to explain what the heck you are supposed to do.

All in all, I hate to say this, but this hack is quite...bad. If I were you, I would probably read the FAQs and maybe look at some of the existing hacks on the site for examples of what to do and what not to do...and then start over. (Preferably also using a SMW ROM instead of a Super Mario All-stars ROM as well, to avoid mixups.)

My computer works better with pictures again. <3

______________________________________________________________________

I must admit, it wasn't too horrible for some two demo hacks like this that I've seen. The main reason I am removing this, though, is due to the fact that you only had two, short levels in this demo. When posting a demo for your hack in the Hacks section itself, I'd say that you should at least have one world completed. If you want an opinion on your hack, you could post a thread in the SMW Hack Discussion subforum and post the IPS to your hack in your "My Files" with a link to it in your thread.

Some of the letters on your title screen have a black background. Try to keep consistency and use only letters with a translucent background. Also, a tile in the "o" in "Mario" is miscolored.

There were a few spots in this game where the grammar could be improved, mainly due to capitilization errors. Have someone proofread your messages in case these errors are reoccuring.

If the player went down here without the springboard, they would be trapped. You used an incorrect corner tile for that land mass to the right as well.

These pipes cutoff into the ground here, and the cement blocks look somewhat out of place in my opinion.

I did not hit the P-Switch before going past the goal; thus, I fell and died. Do not allow deaths after completing the level. It is unfair to the player, and many people are irritated by these traps.

There's really no point to use that language there and in the message box within the level. It just sounds pointless and crude.

The Yellow Switch Palace was left unedited besides the change in the texts.

This doesn't look like a hole to me, and the Chuck is difficult to avoid upon starting this part of the level.

That 3-UP moon was far too obvious and easy to obtain, so please remove it. This moon was on a block that was on the bottom row of tiles which doesn't appear in the game. Move everything up one tile to enable visibility.

All of those coin blocks have multiple coins in them, and that seems a bit excessive. Perhaps you could lower them to one coin each except for one? And that Hammer Bro occasionally disappears due to sprite limitations. Either apply the No Sprite Limits patch, or change the level settings for sprites appropriately.

All edges of the water are cutoff; put proper ends to the water to prevent players from seeing weird gaps caused by blocks and the like.

And this is where the edited levels stopped.

Fix these problems and add more content, and we'll see where this goes next time.

Anyway...

This is not a proper screenshot. Press F1 in ZSNES to make some, and submit them along with your hack.

This level was made entirely out of note blocks, which doesn't look so great and easily annoys the player. Also, enable vertical scrolling to make the camera scroll with Mario.

These Bullet Bills suddenly apearred, with no sound or anything that could have told me they were coming. Always insert Bullet Bills through the shooter sprite.

Glitched goal post. Also, you need a P-switch to complete this level, which is unfair and not allowed here. I couldn't even find one in this level, so I consider it impossible to beat.

Cutoff net.

A couple of emty screens. Booooring.

Moral of the story? Never submit your first hack. Please read the Hack Submission Guidelines before making another hack. You should also consider watching this video.

AUTHOR: superomanyte
DESCRIPTION:
Oh no!Mario's airship got shot down by something in a mysterious castle! Now he's stranded on this island. He decides to explore the castle

REASONS FOR REMOVAL:

Kind of minor, but a new title screen would be nice. Also, what's with the red ground? You do know about the "Enable Custom Palette" function, right? There's no need to change the global palettes when it results in this.

The palette of the text also needs some fixing.

The bright red in the background and foreground could use some toning down. Also, it seems like you forgot a period at the end of the last sentence.

Very minor, but you are missing two corner tiles for the water right below Mario.

If you are going to put Munchers or spikes on the ceiling, at least enable vertical scroll so that people can see them. Also, why only edit the FG palette, and not the BG one as well? As it is now, they don't really fit together.

There was no indication that I had to save the P-Switch at the beginning of the level for later, so now I have to commit suicide.

Apart from the random row of brown blocks at the bottom, the Wendy battle is exactly the same as the original one. When you are using one of the three bosses that actually have editable rooms, why not take advantage of that fact?

Not pictured: after you beat Wendy, you just get returned to the overworld. Some indication that the hack is over (like, say, a "The End" level or a credits sequence) would be nice.

And, finally, the main removal reason:
Originally posted by Hack Submission Guidelines
4. Unless you intend to make your hack contain very long and very high quality levels, demos which are too short to provide any feedback on or be enjoyable will be subject to removal.

If you want to get a one-level hack accepted, I am afraid that two quite bland castle rooms and a for all intents and purposes unchanged boss fight won't be enough.
(referring to the above hack)

Also, you meant to post this as an entry in the Vague gimmick contest, didn't you? Please remember that the hacks section is not meant for contest entries. Use your personal file bin for that, and post a link to it in the contest thread.

Hack Name: Search Of The Golden Feather
Length: unknown
Author: Leo137 - Submitted by: Leo137
Description: This is my first *serious* hack, it started with vanilla levels, but now i've added custom sprites, blocks, etc.

Reasons
I pointed out like, every little thing, so don't be discouraged because of the long removal log. :P

#1

The cement blocks here cause cutoff into the ground behind it. They also look horrible.

#2

The text should say:

Mario arrives to
an island in the
search of a
mythical Golden
Feather.

Maybe the legend
is true...

Just some capitalization errors is all.

#3

The only perspective error I could find was at the top left of the pond. I think you used the wrong tiles there.

#4

Palettes need fixing here.

And here.

#5

This 1-up here was a little easy to get, but once I got to it, I had to blind jump to get down. You had some coins leading down earlier, just do the same here.

#6

This 1-up here was a little easy to get, but once I got to it, I had to blind jump to get down. You had some coins leading down earlier, just do the same here.

#7

Use extended objects 13 and 14 to make these ledges not cutoff.

#8

If I jump in here, I am stuck because I cannot duck. :(

Here too.

#9

Tiny cutoff on the right side of this platform. Make sure there is no ground tile underneath it.

#10

The bullet bill launcher cuts off the ground behind it. Also, the very right edge of this platform is a tiny bit cutoff.

#11

This place was barren of enemies, yet you still gave a powerup here...? Add some enemies here.

#12

Tiny cutoff hiding on the top left part of the higher column.

#13

Mario comes out of the pipe a little too high.

#14

I saw in your hack thread you were going to translate all the message boxes. You must have missed one.

#15

This part was really hard, it seemed I had to take a hit here from the bullet bills. Raise the pipes up so that it is easier to jump over them.

#16

Uncapitalize the D in Dead, and add a period (or !) and the end.

#17

These bullet shooters are cutoff floating in the air. Just extend them down to the ground.

#18

This was the most unfair jump in the whole game. I had to jump off the spring board through a narrow path of spikes, while still moving to the left, beating the autoscroll. This is only level 2! lower the difficulty a little, please?

#19

Because of the autoscroll, Mario walks for about 20 seconds after the music stops. Lead the player through a pipe to an area with the goal to prevent this...

...and this from happening.

#20

This koopa was misleading; I thought I could jump down there!

#21

Here, the palette is a little weird.

#22

This Ball 'n' Chain doesn't circle around the block you wanted it too. This pipe is cutoff on the bottom, and cuts off the other pipe at the top.

#23

Forgot what I took this picture for.....

#24

The goal post is cutoff by the trees.

#25

The screen starts a little low here. Mess with your BG/FG initial positions to fix this.

#26

In this strange
island, the moons
don't have the
same behaviour
that they do at
Yoshi's Island.
Be careful!

#27

I thought these were pears, but they are spikes! They don't look harmful to me.

#28

This is way the first post was not prioritized like the second. Mario cuts off the tape.

#29

The shooter is cutoff and floating. Just extend it to the ground.

#30

This jump was really hard because I had to jump over pears while still hopping on the bullet bills.

#31

Mario hovers over this coconut.

#32

I thought this was a water level, but I can jump around. Check the 'Make this level a water level' box to fix this.

#33

The screen position could be better here. The lava is also cutoff by the slabs of ground floating in it.

#34

The rope, vines, and shooters are all cutoff here. Make sure things have definite ends, so they don't look odd.

#35

This pipe is cutoff too. Just place some ground underneath it.

#36

Again, I thought this place was supposed to be under water, but then again, it shouldn't be, because there's water right here, but I swim here later on in the level.

#37

See? Here I can spin jump off these Torpedo Teds. They should stay underwater.

#38

The palettes in this area could be better.

#39

Now I can swim here. ???

#40

When the area is slippery, you shouldn't have one block jumps like this. Make the platforms at least two blocks long.

#41

You didn't need to put this in the level, you could have put it in the description or in a readme.

#42

If I don't get through fast enough, I am forced to take a hit here. Let the fire come a little later so I can get out safely.

#43

The palettes here need some work as well.

#44

The autoscroll doesn't stop at the end like it should. Make sure your level ends on a screen boundary so the autoscroll stops.

#45

The place had not enough time for going through the whole level. Add a couple hundred seconds or so.

#46

These coin block stairs are hard to jump up, space the blocks a little farther apart.

#47

A) I'm underwater, I can't run.
B) I can get past the fish without waking them up, which makes this section really boring. Put the fish closer to Mario so they are sure to wake up.

Yeah, boring.

#48

I can swim under some of the blocks to get a the way back here. Worst part is, I can't swim back!

This is where the hole is.

#49

More like Gray Switch. Fix the palette so it is yellow.

#50

Little cutoff here. Use the correct egde tile so this looks smoother.

#51

I enter the next leve to see a moon and a flower. A second later...

...the screen scrolls down and Mario dies. Fix the BG/FG initial settings so that Mario doesn't die upon entering the level. Also, the bullet shooter is cutoff into the ground there.

Overall, the gameplay was a little back and forth, from easy to hard, to easy and hard again. Make sure your levels follow the difficulty curve, and that the easy levels come first, then the harder ones. I thought it was fun though, and after these things are fixed, I will gladly review it again for moderation. I will be waiting for your next release!

For whatever reason, it appears that you uploaded Mario Paint. This obviously does not fit the screenshot and descriptions you had for the hack, and you are not supposed to submit other games that do not use Super Mario World as a base. It also appears that what you originally intended to upload included glitches, and some of the Overworld has quite a bit of cutoff. Might I recommend that you read the Hack Submission Guidelines?

Red outline = Perspective error.
Orange outline = Please remove the fat dark outline. A single black outline is sufficient instead.

When you have a demo, you should not make original levels accessible. (I could get here from Yoshi's House.) Better yet, don't make these levels even show up on your OW.

Okay, the first level. I don't quite like the palette of the flying ?-block here. You might fix it.

The palette of this Banzai Bill is awkward. Small palette issues as this are no removal reason though. Too many cutoffness is, however.

The diagonal ledge cuts into the left side of the pipe.

3 times cutoff in this picture.
1. The cement block's palette is not appealing, too. Also, they cut into the pipe. Use a regular pipe end tile instead.
2. The left pipe is also a bit cutoff at the bottom, but this is seriously not that bad.
You can even leave that as it is, for my tastes.
3. Hard to see but the land cuts into the left pipe as well as you have used the wrong edge tile.

Same mistake as before. Use the right edge tile (left of the Mega Mole).

If you enter that door, the BG has the wrong position. Try BG = C0 or 00 instead.

Same problem as above (Use right BG position). Also, this door is cutoff. Put it on a ledge instead of an edge tile.

Cutoff at two places here. First left of Mario, second at the upper left tile of the edges that include the Dragon Coin. Also what is this grey square thingy above the Dragon Coin?

Square thingy not wanted.

Cutoff right of Mario. The black line has no end.

Also, I could have just skipped this level on the Overworld. Avoid this.

Though this hack has some cutoffs and errors, it contains some nice creative palettes, as well as some good level design ideas. Good to see that you are able to insert custom sprites and blocks as well.
Also, 3 exits are very short for a demo. Please fix said things and make some more levels until you submit a new one.

It does not seem like you actually viewed the Hack Submission Guidelines as I suggested. There were many things that made this hack bad; it looked so bland that I stopped after the first castle. I'd either recommend dropping this hack or having a friend thoroughly go through and point out problems. To be brief, I will show you a few of the major problems that occurred throughout the hack.

I could not remember a single screen in this hack that went without cutoff. Cutoff makes areas in games look much worse than having a nice smooth transition between pieces of objects. Go back and fix all of the cutoff.

I was able to get underneath these blocks when trying to "find the key" for the keyhole that I never found, and I spin-jumped to my death. Please make sure that your tiles and blocks like these have a large enough gap for Super Mario to fit under while standing at the very least.

One of your pipes led me to a never ending minigame. Make sure that your pipes actually lead to other parts of the level where Mario can progress without being trapped.

As far as I could tell, all of your levels were poor, blatant edits of the original Super Mario World. When starting a level, it is advised that you delete everything from the original game first.

Somehow, after completion of Yoshi's Island 2, I managed to fall and "die" after the victory scene. Mario actually lived though, but it corrupted the Overworld for one level. Extend land after all of the goals so that Mario can't fall off.

In the few new message blocks you had, most of the texts had mostly pointless text with poor grammar. Get someone who is good with English to proofread your messages first if you have an issue with it.

Oh boy, this hack was quite a wreck. I didn't get far, mainly thanks to a fatal glitch, which was the reason for removal, aside some other things I'll mention now.

While your title screen wasn't bad, it could've been a lot better. Basically, it was just the normal SMW title screen, but without the sprites.
Your title screen would be a lot better if you just made your own level and demo for it.
You should also remove the black outlines around the stars on the title screen.
Now, for the main removal reasons.

Both of these level, the Item Storage and Yoshi's House are impossible to exit. You are permanently stuck, making the item storage totally useless, since you have to reset the game to get out. Put a side exit in BOTH levels. (And remove the cement blocks from the side in the item storage.)
The pallete in Yoshis House is really bad too, it doesnt look snowy at all. Make your own pallete and fix it.

And this is the major problem with your hack. It is impossible to see anything because garbled tiles are everywhere. If you don't fix this problem there is no way we can accept your hack.

Your ROM seems to be corrupted, because I saw random sprites everywhere when I opened your hack in Lunar Magic. Maybe its the patch, but maybe its your ROM. I didn't get to see much of the hack, but what I have seen needs a lot of work. Good luck getting it fixed.

There's not really much to see here. It was a short hack that I couldn't complete, and it lacked creativity. I'd recommend reading the Tips of the Day and the Hack Submission Guidelines when starting over or working on a new hack.

Edit: Next time, make sure to use a proper screenshot as well (preferrably four good pictures or more). When taking screenshots on zsnes, the images will appear in the same directory/folder as the hack if that's what your issue was all about.

There was nothing too wrong with the Title Screen. Your use of note blocks in the movie was just uncomfortable to me. I might as well say here that your blue Mario here in this hack was odd, and the Mario here is slightly different than your normal Mario.

Nothing too wrong, but you may want to fix the capitalization and refer to below as the Reviews. (If this hack does get released in the future, I would say that people would at least need to make a normal review first before posting their times anyway.)

*Your Overworld was purely disgusting; fix it or get some advice on how to make an Overworld.

*You'll need to make a few hex edits to fix the "S" there. Ask around the forums if you need help.

*This level was just flat-out poorly designed. The water is cutoff to an extreme, and you overuse munchers in a stacked/floating manner to such a degree that I can't complete your one level.

As I said, I'd advise that you just start another hack; one level is short after all.
