Kai's currently unnamed hack

Standard

I've been working on this the past few months, adding features and things. I finished everything for a 1 world demo a few days ago, and have been fixing bugs since. I finished a playthrough without issues tonight, though I'm certain there's still bugs in there somewhere. Anyway, screenies:

Download Link

Features:

- Custom levels designed by me (duh)
- Custom graphics (also duh)
- Custom music (though only one song ported by me)
- Custom blocks, such as the SMB3 breakable brick, and falling donut blocks (more duh)
- Assembly hacks, including custom sprites, level behavior, graphical effects
- Custom bosses that make use of pretty much all of the above.
- 8 total levels, with 12 exits to find.

Story:
In a Mario game? Seriously, Mario games never have much more story than "save the princess from Bowser." You have to wonder if she's getting kidnapped on purpose just to get away from him...

General stuff:
- No yoshi (yet). He's too powerful, I think, so I'm going to save him for later in the hack
- Capes are rather rare, since they're also powerful. I may get rid of them entirely except out of green switch blocks. Not sure yet.

Known issues:
Two places have nasty status bars. (These have never been a huge priority on my fix list, and I didn't want to delay my demo any longer)

So yeah... 1 world demo. I'm going to port everything over to a new rom, so any bugs you might find would be great to inform me about :)

Not all of my assets are credited, because when I started this, I was stupid. So, if you see anything in here that's not credited in the readme, please inform me about it.

All criticism accepted and appreciated.
This prosject looks really good, I got nothing else to say. The screen shots looks good, specually the floating mucher boss!. I'll give this hack a try when it get released:)

Impressive hack you got here! I really like the graphics you got in this. It's really nice. Also I see no errors or glitches. Keep up the good work! *Downloads*Nothing to put here at the time being.
Thanks to Tom Servo for the awesome new layout!
Floating muncher? Eh, whatever, I'M GOING TO PLAY IT!

Edit: Played it, you should change the bobomb thing with son of sun, because you may think you need to hit the eye with it, which is misleading. Not to mention the boss is SO FREAKING LAGGY!!!
I like this hack
i just downloaded it and patched it. Love the custom sprites!
this should be featured if done
since the level desings are really good (imo)
and it looks awesome

Nice job, Kaijyuu. I'm very impressed with your spriting skills.

Levels: 8.5/10
The levels were creative, nonlinear, and made it fun to play. The themes both fit in and transferred easily. It wasn't incredibly fun- some of the levels, especially Mushroom Secret 1 & 2, where generic and only fun the first half of the level, however. The intro was very nice.

Graphics: 9/10
Varying, interesting, and good-looking, the graphics choice was good. Not much else to say.

Music: 8.5/10
Once again great job. The music was fitting, catchy, and interesting to listen to. It created a good sense of ambiance. Your use of vanilla music was justified, but it would be nice to see that replaced too. This is a whole new Mushroom Kingdom! (Loved Mushroom Dungeon music.)

Overworld: 9/10
It was vanilla graphics, but it still looked good. The other graphics, along with their music, were great choices and gave the exact feel of what I as looking for.

Polish/Bugs: 8/10
Here and there, I would see cutoff (not counting the unfinished overworld) in the BG or a over-plain background. But generally it was very nice.
Well, this is a good game, actually. the kirby level is great. Now my only compliant was the hardness of the mushroom fort.

Agreed on the lag part. I've got a fix in mind.

As for the bob-ombs... I thought about that. Wasn't sure how to tell the player to stomp the fires without straight out telling them with a text box. I might have to :|

Really? I thought the first half of those levels were the boring parts :X

I can see how the second half of mushroom secret 2 could be seen as generic, though. It's mostly spammed donut blocks. I'm thinking of giving it a graphical overhaul, since I like the design otherwise.

I'm going to try and make use of all the vanilla music somewhere in the hack. I might regulate the SMW grassland theme to Yoshi's house only; not sure yet.

The dungeon levels are meant to be difficult. I'm going for a difficulty of a regular level ~3 worlds ahead. Nevertheless, the second phase of the final boss there still needs some nerfs, I think...

Thanks for all the comments :)
PLayed through the first few levels.
The most notable thing was the intro, I was amazed!
the floating muncher boss was fantastic. :D

The levels themselves (from what I've played so far) are very well done. I like the design, and some of the palettes were great. Lots of secret exits, I see. Adds exploration to the game, I guess.

The submap was pretty nice, too, I'd like to see a bit more decoration on the right side of it, though.

Very nice job.

Updates :O

I made a new bonus game. It will be one of several possibilities for when you get 100+ bonus stars from hitting goal tapes.

Hrm.. what's he doing up there?

Ack! Spinies!

It starts out easy at first...

Then gets harder.

As soon as you get hit, the bonus game's over. You don't actually take damage, though. Uses the same animations (and indeed, the same code) as the original SMW bonus game to end.

Items that Lakitu throws at you here:

1. Yellow Coin - Common - Gives you 1 coin
2. Red Coin - Uncommon - Gives you 2 coins
3. Blue Coin - Rare - Gives you 5 coins
4. 1 UP - Rare - Gives you 1 life
5. Fish - Rare - ...?
6. Spiny - Very Common - Ends the game if hit
7. Hammer - Uncommon - Ends the game if hit
8. Fireball - Uncommon - Ends the game if hit
9. 3 UP Moon - Extremely Rare - Gives you 3 lives

Also, I spiffied up the graphics for the second half of Mushroom Secret 2.

The clouds scroll left, and of course there's the HDMA gradient.
The clouds are on layer 2, but I could very easily make them layer 3 if I wanted to. Problem is I can't think of a good background for it. Originally my idea was to use the yoshi's island sea background, but this bridge is over land...

Old (no animations or other spiffy stuff):
