Experimenting:

That is looking quite nice so far dakress!
I have a couple more Ide like to show off.
A normal grassland, and recolored Rex:

And a red palette, in a vertical level I appropriately call "Red Mountain" although I think I can do a bit better:

Mario's Greatest Adventure! <- My hack thread, where I make magic.
The first palette seems very nice. The second is quite nice too. #w{:>}
@Demonwithin - I would tweak the 'red mountain' palette as it looks odd with red grass. I would make the dirt palette darker.

Yes, I see what you mean. The red BG should be more (saturated)?

Hows this?
And now for a castle palette, im going for a dark/gritty feeling for the castle:

Mario's Greatest Adventure! <- My hack thread, where I make magic.
For the castle palette, the orange-y rocks really clash with the grey BG.
The first one looks okay, but not many is a fan of red grass. Just sayin'.

The castle palette looks nice, but you should tweak the lava palette, as it is a little bright for a dark/gritty castle. In my opinion the lava palette is the hardest one to make properly.
Map16 the red rocks into another color and it'll look so much better.

does it look good or bad?
This palette isn't very good, it looks too bright (at least for me, i don't like this kind of palette). Try to darken it a little.

Alright well I made my castle's palette darker:

How does it look now?

@TheDestroyer: Looks better to me. You may want to fiddle with the sprite palettes a bit, because the Thwomps seem a bit too bright for their surroundings. Oh, and definitely change the white on whatever palette you are using for the main castle ground to something a little greyer. It stands out too much from the rest of the colors.

So yeah, I'm not really going to be posting for a while. Not that anyone cares.
I should have posted this here ages ago:

<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/QEpobxVuAFU?fs=1&hl=en_US&color1=0x402061&color2=0x9461ca"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/QEpobxVuAFU?fs=1&hl=en_US&color1=0x402061&color2=0x9461ca" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

I had to make it a video due to the huge amount of ExAnimation. The Goomba has been fixed.
Still here, I guess. Despite all odds.
Wow, that's simply beautiful! That ExAnimated fungus is a really nice touch, and all the palettes work together quite nicely to make the level seem very dense with foliage and shadows.

How does this palette look?

I'm aiming for an ice cream style palette.
Hmm... This combination looks a bit eye-searing, so what I suggest you do is make the grass brown or cream (chocolate/vanilla), an make the dirt creamish with dark brown spots (vanilla/mint chip). Then make the hills pink (strawberry). Leave the water, it's fine. You could make those three colors in palette 5 yellow if you want if you want to include that reference.
Still here, I guess. Despite all odds.
Is this better?
For the grass, I meant the inverse, but it seems alright. I said you could keep the water, though. It looks good like this, too, though. (sorry for my repetitive and unintelligible speech, my brain's kinda fried right now)

Finally, after a long battle...

True redrawn fire mario colors,it was a true battle, because I had to edit the gloves and the eyes.
