General Mario Games Thread

I beat the game myself about three days ago. The final boss wasn't as disappointing as the original's. I'm glad they added a seperate segment, even if it wasn't hard. It actually reminded me of Yoshi Island's final boss. (With Bowser getting closer and closer.)

I'm now at World S. I've gotten all the stars up to this point, so I just have to focus on these few galaxies. I only completed the first one so far, along with getting the first star in Rolling Coaster and the SMS reference galaxy. When I saw the first galaxy in World S, my heart dropped. I absolutely hated the purple coin challenge on the Luigi planet in SMG, and I was terrified of what to expect. Unfortunately, I was right to assume it was worse this time around. Although the planet itself was easier to walk on, the Cosmic Clones were a real pain in the ass...I got my first and only game over so far in this galaxy. (Even though I did this galaxy with only 4 lives from the startup.)

Rolling Coaster is a true nightmare. The first star was simple...I got the star coin and the star on my first try. The purple coin challenge is a different story. Only missing 10 coins is harder than I thought it would be...and trying to grab every coin slings me off the ledge. Eh...even Rainbow Road is easier than this.
Flip-Swap's purple coin challenge was hard, but not as much as people made it out to be. Tall Trunk's purple coins were more challenging to get, as you can only miss a few on your way down the slide. Starshine Beach's coins were actually very simple and fun to get.

I'm at 102 stars. To anyone who's past 120 and has started into the Green Star challenge, is it any more difficult? In fact, is it any different from the first 120 stars?
@above: The green stars are disappointing, but some of them are MUCH harder than ANY gold stars there is. And there are also the 2 final stars which are arguably the hardest stars in the game.

Grrr. Just unlocked Stone Cyclone Galaxy with 90 stars only to find out the galaxy after that requires 100 stars, then the one after that requires 110 stars, plus a Hungry Luma at the end. Oh well, at least they're making you put some effort into unlocking all the levels this time. Damn, Stone Cyclone Galaxy is hard as shit. I lost a crapload of lives before giving up for the night. My memory is a bit hazy, but wasn't there a galaxy very similar to this one in the original SMG?
Your memory is accurate. It's the same stone cyclone from Beach Bowl Galaxy, albeit with a time-slowing switch.

You're going to love the next unlockable galaxy. If I have to Daredevil that one, I'll sue.
The next galaxy is easy, and so is the NEXT one. Seriously, the hardest is stone cyclone. And that's because of the first green star.

For me, the most difficult challenge this game has yet presented was either Stone Cyclone or Clockwork...though both missions pale in comparison to MG1's Rolling Gizmo or Bubble Blast.

Truthfully, while MG2 is more ingenious with its levels, the first game was a 'lot' harder. I've had Game Overs, but there hasn't yet been a challenge I can't overcome. I couldn't beat MG1's Sling Pod Galaxy for years.
Finally beat Rolling Coaster's prankster comet...the rest of the world wasn't that bad. I hated the boss rush galaxy...but it wasn't difficult. Bouldergeist was never kind to me in SMG1, and he wasn't any more forgiving this time. Especially on the clock...he just loved to throw only one Boom Boo rocks to me at a time.

I must admit that the hungry luma galaxy for World S was very fun. I didn't find it that challenging, but more enjoyable than anything else. Now I'm on the green star challenge. I just finished collecting all the green stars in World 1. For the most part, I enjoy searching around the levels, but by the third star for a world, I'm tired of trudging through the whole level.
Finally beat Stone Cyclone Galaxy. That one was pretty sadistic. Plenty of instant-death scenarios at every corner. I screwed up plenty on the crossover section with all the fast-moving platforms. That time-deceleration switch comes in handy. Thankfully, I made it out of there with the Comet Medal as well.

I attempted Rolling Coaster's purple coin challenge a few times, then just gave up.

Thankfully, that galaxy is generous with its Star Bits so you can easily collect enough for enough extra lives to get through it.

Also, I actually got through Stone Cyclone Galaxy's first star on my second try. The only death was from missing a platform while grabbing the Comet Medal. Next attempt, though, I did everything right and finished with the Comet Medal. (I swear, if the Comet star in that galaxy involves Cosmic Clones...)

I'm probably retired tbh
No. It'll be something worse, like a Double Time/Fast Foe challenge, in which the only way to live is to hit those blue switches.

Wait...Nintendo wouldn't be that sadistic because that would mean not catering to the weak wills of the new 'games for non-gamer' generation.

I'm not sure if I remember, but I think it was just a speed run, the kind with the +time clocks scattered.
Great....

Well, whatever. A star is a star.

I love that idea, though--speed runs with time-clocks. It's very Crash Bandicoot of Nintendo.

Not the first star, the first GREEN star. The first and second stars are easy pie in comparison to the first green star!

I did the purple coin mission for Rolling Coaster, and I almost took back what I said about this game being too easy. I also did the double-time challenge for Twisting Trial; that was hard, too, although I'm fairly certain that the platforms were spinning that fast in Super Mario Sunshine...oh, well.

Could someone tell me where the Comet Medal is in Bowser's Galaxy Generator? I only want to play that level once more, and I'm not sure if it's listed on gamefaqs yet.

It's toward the end of the level. There's a part where you need to cross a large lava pit on Snake Blocks. You need to make sure you still have Yoshi for this part. While crossing the pit, you'll come across a taller lava wall, and the Snake Blocks will start going up. Right before this wall, toward the left, there should be some of those Yoshi Tongue flowers. Use those to reach the Comet Medal.

Thanks. I'll say that, even though the Bowser fight was sort of...lousy, that was one of the most enjoyable and climatic last 'normal' levels in a Mario game.
@above: Seriously, how did you even miss it? You can't even MISS it! It's right in front of you!

Hey now, no one's perfect.

I've got 91 stars now, and I need 100 to unlock the next galaxy. Oh joy, time for more Prankster Comets. I oughta try to beat Twisty Trials's comet again. That was surprisingly tough. One false move...dead.
I should have looked for that medal the first time around. I was just a little more concerned with, you know, falling off the edge and losing my last bit of health!

117 stars and counting. If all goes well, I'll be in the green before nightfall. And the only stars left to get are secret stars!
