General Mario Games Thread

...Because platform games are too mainstream and played by too many people who would complain about unfair (to them) bosses.

SM64 had, in my view, the hardest Mario platformer final boss, and the final blow was very climatic, with pieces of the land falling away to make a star. But since SM64, last boss quality has plunged to the depths of Bowser's floating bathtub in the sky.
Wow, Luigi was right under my nose for a while now.

He's actually quite useful, especially for some long jumps. I went back to Flip-Out Galaxy and got the Comet Medal with Luigi.

I'm now at 114 stars. The speed-run comet in Stone Cyclone wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Once you figure out some shortcuts, you're good to go. After that, went and did the Chimp mission in Slimy Spring. That also took a few tries, but once I figured out you could zap those Jellyfish things and get a shitload of Star Bits, it certainly helped.

Two of the Comets I have remaining are the dreaded Fluzzard races. Happy happy joy joy.

Really, since how you get the Medals is pretty straight-forward, those levels just involve practice. Do them several times to memorize a good path.

At least they don't have Comet Stars, only Medals.
Yay! My order of SMG2 has just been dispatched today! #w{=D}
It comes out on Friday here but I have to wait until my Birthday before I can play it which is ONE WEEK AWAY!
Good for you! And happy birthday!

@Jacob: I hated those Fluzzard galaxies, too. Nothing was more annoying than trying to get a star, getting a Game Over, and then getting those stupid letters uring you you "Race! Race! Race on my awful levels that will give you cause to destroy something!" I miss the first game's Ray Surfing because that was easier and a lot of fun.

Still plodding along with these Green Stars...and I'm running out of fun galaxies to revisit.
I get my copy tommrrow. I hope that the postives outbeat the negitives. B)
Slowly crawling toward the finish line (at least for the first 120 stars) with 115 stars. I missed the Comet Medal in Fleet Glide Galaxy the first time as I just didn't give a shit and wanted to beat the level. Went back to try and get it, and couldn't find one of the gates needed to unlock the medal, so I had to watch a video to find out its location. I figured there may have been some hidden path in that area with the secret gate, but just assumed there wasn't given the linear tendencies of the levels.
Did some things to prepare for SMG2,

-Added to wishlist so I get extra stars on club nintendo
-Practising the slide levels on SM64 ;)

I hope tommrrow dont drag, I get my copy after school.

I too haven't found that coin yet. I haven't beaten the game yet, though. I think I have somewhere around 100 stars. Man I can't wait till the green stars </sarcasm>
I've realized this was outdated.
I haven't been playing too much SMG2 lately, so I'm only up to 105 stars.

Luigi has started becoming helpful. With his higher jumps, I was able to get through the Boomsday Machine Daredevil run fairly easily (only one death, but not on the boss itself). I also used him for the Comet star in Bowser's Galaxy Generator and made it, although it took a few more tries. I still have some of the hardest stars left, though. O.O

On another, lighter note, the Speed Run theme in SMG2 is now one of my favorite pieces of music.

And...117. Just grabbed the hidden stars in Upside Dizzy and Boo Moon. Damn, the box breaking mission in Upside Dizzy was hard. Took me at least 20 attempts. I jumped back and forth between different strategies until I finally won.

As for Boo Moon's hidden star, I assumed it was in the dark maze part at the beginning of the level. I kept searching for more openings in the maze as I saw there was more to it than I was currently accessing. Then I finally realized the other portion of the maze was part of the next level in the galaxy. After a bit more exploring, I discovered there was another Snake Block past the Launch Star in the goo area, and grabbed the hidden star.

That leaves me with two Fluzzard races and the Boss Blitz Comet to do. I saved the worst for last.
The Boss Blitz Speed Run isn't that bad. IT gives you five minutes but that's more than enough because I did it in exactly 4 minutes.
@^: I'm not looking forward to that star either. Bouldergeist takes quite a bit of time to beat already, but with only 5 minutes to beat him and 4 other bosses, I'll be in trouble.

Anyway, I'm really moving now. I'm at 111 stars, and I think I have all the Comet Medals except the one from the last galaxy. (There are 48, right?)

I was pretty lucky on Rolling Coaster Galaxy's and Twisty Trials Galaxy's Comet stars. I only lost two or three lives on Rolling Coaster's purple coins and just one life on Twisty Trials' (really intense) double time. I've also taken care of Fleet Glide Galaxy (whew...) and the first star in Flip-Out Galaxy. Just 9 stars left before the green stars come...

I've got 241 Stars now. I got the last comet medal, so do I just play more galaxies I've already done until the final prankster comet shows, or do I fight bowser again or what?

You have to get 9999 star bits and give them to the banker Toad and the prankster comet will show up, there won't be a cut scene for it but it will be there.
Wait, Bouldergeist is in SMG2 too?! Great... I can't wait. I haven't been playing it much lately. Sometimes, I lose the drive to play when I attempt a purple coin comet...

I'm really hoping that was a typo. Then again, The Bouldergeist Daredevil Run didn't take me near as long as the Ray Surfing. Maybe he won't be too bad.
Bouldergeist isn't that bad; he just takes too long to beat.

I now have 117 stars. I've collected all the stars from World 1-6 now, leaving just three in World S.

Unfortunately, the last three are Comet stars in Stone Cyclone, Boss Blitz, and Flip-Out. I've already attempted the former two, and they're really tough. Stone Cyclone's Speed Run is even more insane than its first star, and, with the trouble Bouldergeist gives me (takes too much time) and no midpoint, Boss Blitz's Speed Run is also frustrating.
