NOW WITH COMMENTARY

If you have known me before (Mostly pointing at Kyoseron since she's about the only one who tested this.) probably remember my SMW hack called... >-< Catsmack. Well recently, (If you call March 2009 recent) I have started a new hack. It isn't called/has Catsmack in the title, and the main character is myself. (Not really, since the only relation is the name- Snowshoe) First it started out around January, before I rereg'd at SMWC. I created a vanilla SMW hack, using the overworld for the Vanilla SMW Overworld contest. (BTW I never entered it, since I was booted March 16th) It was called: "The Golden Plunger" hey i needed some cliche mario thing so what you see is what you get. I never worked on it during the summer, so it was on hiatus. Now I have revived it, and I have somewhat a plot, a new title, and a main character. Basic elements, right? Heh, I got the idea from Kyoseron reading my Rizon vhost as Walking.In.My.Shoes, but as you can tell, it isn't called that. The plot part came from my first hack. SMB2 for the NES.

OLD Beta Title Screen
Please excuse the sloppy WALKING THROUGH THE SNOW text. I have yet to create some layer 3 for it. I'm also sorry it's small and a JPEG. If you wish to see higher quality screenshots I will use my photobucket. (This goes for all screens until I stop being lazy.)

OLD Test Level
This is my test level. Notice the font used here, and the -THINKER'S WEEKLY- instead of -POINT OF ADVICE-. Yes pipes are cardboard boxes. Pipes and cats don't mix. Features include: Double Jumping, (Yoshi style) and an Ice powerup instead of Mario's Fire powerup. Going to remove time from the game, time limits and cats don't mix. Since I'm removing time, I might as well revamp the status bar, too.



NEWS
I have added a little more stuff to the test level, yet it still is bland. I also added a GPS system, which tells you which level you are in. (Levelnames ASM) A ground pound attack has been added as well. I would show the GPS screenshot, but the name doesn't match the level, and you kinda get what I'm talking about anyway: -GPS- MANICK VILLAGE

I haven't done much to the OW, but I have changed the Title Screen a bunch. I also got this hack to work on my Nintendo DS!

Glitch...
Double Jumping into an enemy as "Small Mario" will allow you to double jump away from the floor when Snowshoe dies. However, it does not save you from losing a life, as when the death tune ends the screen fades out back to the OW... novelty I guess?

NEW! Title Screen
Here I used multicolored fonts and added lowercase letters for WALKING THROUGH THE SNOW like my message boxes. I turned the level BG completely black and made sure places where Snowshoe jumped out of frame were removed and looked the same as before. (Priority with the BG) Removed the clouds and some other enemies/objects. Changed the font on the MARIO files, too. A nice dark purple - D E M O - was added. Used the star like tiles from the OW here, as seen on the bottom, and my name in capital letters. I think it looks good:

I have two more tilesets done, underground and forest, be sure to see them when I post new screens!

[19:48:05] <+Snowshoe> the levelnames asm can be a GPS, like i mentioned before, but with a signal. I can make it so Snowshoe has the first world mapped out on his GPS, and once he leaves the next levels won't have names on the OW, he'd have to talk to an NPC sprite and get it mapped on his GPS. I can fake a "no signal" in levels and the OW, I can also fake "Good" "Best"...etc. The farther you go underground in a level destroys the signal. NPCs can also give you their GPS information one world at a time, since I can't code any of this, I will have to make some things required and loop my way around so it fits just right.

It's almost done, no cutoffs really, there probably is one or two due to hill placements but it's good.
This looks kinda cool, I hope to play it sometime.

I'm really liking the new title screen a lot more than the old one, although since the background of the stage is black and the borders have no alternate color definition, I would suggest some kind of outline to define the border apart from the background and give the main portion of the border a bit of a different color, e.g. darker-than-your-text purple, if that factor will remain if/when you replace the YI snow rip. It's okay as it is, but this might make it better.

Now that I look at it, there is/might be some slight discoloration in the water - the body of water and the corners near the land seem a bit mismatched. I'd also make the waves a just little lighter so it's a more subtle texture. This could be just the JPG quality throwing me off and if it is, completely ignore this statement. :z

OW border color is spectacular and I like your snowflakes; wouldn't change a thing about it. I'd also like to see Snowshoe in motion, perhaps you could do a video of a quick level to show his animation. (How much has changed between the old sprite of Gordon and the new Snowshoe one?)

I am wondering if you could let me help out with the status bar and I could try to fit Snowshoe's whole name in it over the MARIO some time; the S.S part of S.Shoe is kind of squished and inconsistent.

I may be able to finish an abridged port of Walking in My Shoes for your title screen by Thursday, but an extended version that still loops fluently is going to take a hell of a lot longer since it would be at least twice as long. Difficult song, but will be well worth it. ~

LOLPREVIEW EDIT: I love your new tileset... something about it reminds me of a GameBoy or NES game in stylization.. maybe it's the overall palette choice and the kind of detail you put in. Are those thorns near the bottom right of your graphics space? Maybe I would have to see it ingame against a background before judging, but I think the spiky parts should be a little more noticable so you're 100% certain it's dangerous to the touch. Other than that, it's very cool.

I gave it a widescreen movie type of effect, I put no border on purpose, and I already blew up the YI BG exgfx with my new tileset...

The water is half and half a rip from the NES SMB2, and yes the JPG is probably messing it up.

The only thing I did was remove the patch on Gordon, and called it Snowshoe. They're almost exactly the same except some frames and the Blue > Purple eye color. You've only seen screenshots, but I could come up with an animated GIF or something to show the walking animation.

I turned the message box into a mailbox, so the vines are used to "support" it. (FLOATING MAILBOXES?!) I don't know about the other one, and I updated my tileset and got rid of the triangle mountain, etc.

Credits are almost finished. Beta testers: All debug switches are on for of course, debug uses. The credits cutscene can be accesed normally by going to "Manick Market" and heading right to the ghost house. You will have to reset the game after it, though, if you want to continue testing. Welcome to the team Ixtab. (I got your block working)
