Hm. If that's the case, how explicit will that be? Will you have some blocks that are only passable during a part of the day, or just a hidden door that you don't say anything about?


Also, if I may suggest so, I would add a day/night selector after you beat the final boss, to make everything a lot easier when getting all the secrets.
Maxx, it might be something as simple as having the key and keyhole only appearing at certain times of day, unless I think of something "awesomer" XD, and once I'm done with this hack, I'll probably have enough ASM knowledge to make a time of day selector, so that's definitely something I may include.

You know, that idea sounds really, really cool.
I can see me playing, and going into a pipe, with a pedestal type-thing there, but it's completely empty.
Then I can see coming back in the night to the pedestal, and there's a key on it!

Just adds to the exploration factor. I like it.

It could also be as simple as Ocarina of Time, where certain enemies only come out at night... Boos in a forest would be a good idea. So you have a cheerful forest at day, but when the sun goes down, it becomes spooky. At first I was wondering what you can actually do with your day/night system but actually, there could be some really clever level design if you think about it.

Good work - I just want to see the level design to be as impressive as the programming!

Maybe you could have shops that are only open at some times of day.

I love all of these awesome ideas, although I'm not too sure how difficult it would be to spawn sprites at a certain time of day, considering I'm only using one level for each time of day, not multiple which some may assume. Oh, and thanks for all the awesome feedback everyone :>

With custom sprites it should be pretty easy, actually. Just use whatever your variable is to determine day/night and have the sprite spawn/not spawn if the time of day isn't the desired one. I think spawning/not spawning enemies during certain times of day would be an incredible feature. I could imagine some levels being much harder at a certain time of day, making the player consider hitting up a previous level to stock up on stuff while waiting out the day to head back to the level that's too hard at one time of day.

The potential for many really cool things is definitely up there, and I can't wait to see what you can cook up.

The Explanation
Alright kiddies.. It started out as simple overworld edit, changing from the special world palette and back, but now it's far larger and far awesomer! Now, instead of just day and night, There is Morning, Day, Sunset, Night, and then it repeats. During each time period, EVERY LEVEL IS AFFECTED, so since the third level's at night, after completing the second level, the overworld becomes night time, and every level is at night, a night HDMA effect, and a night palette. Same for every other period of time (Day, Sunset, Morning), except using the corresponding HDMA/Palette. The overworld also has these 4 periods of time. Oh, and on a side note, I'll show a full, Lunar Magic screenshot of the overworld (it doesn't look as pretty without the HDMA though). Another sidenote, I've added DKC2's navigational arrows :D.

EDIT: If you're too lazy to read, or don't fully get it, each time you beat a level, time passes, causing the time of day to change.

Uh.. Oops.. I forgot to think this part out while I was uploading/taking the screenshots D:. Basically, I worked pretty damn hard on this and with a little help from K3fka and Roy, this was made possible :D. Oh, and I really hope everyone likes this, because like I said, I put a lot of time and effort into this.

Wow.. thanks so much everyone for all the amazing feedback.. I didn't think you guys would like this so much :O. Well, I promise I'll show you guys a video as soon as I'm done porting everything to a new ROM. I've decided to do this because I spread my freespace apart really awkwardly, had tons of extra patches patched and hex edits made, so my new ROM will be far cleaner.

Heh, I got bored while I was working on my new, secret patch for this which I shall not tell you guys about yet, so I decided to make a box art-y thing on MS Paint. Hope you like it :D, and the patch should be done in a couple days at the most.

Looks very nice, but I'd prefer the title to match the one on the game's title screen. I don't know what you could do with this though... Either use it for a custom intro or include it with the patch.

Use edit's tool. Shrink it, maybe, but Edit's can totally get the job done easy.
Heh, that's quite a good idea, but I was thinking of doing it differently, as in using overworld tiles, plus, I'm not sure if I could keep the quality if I shrink it D:

Well.. after going through tons of struggles, and problems with porting over to a new ROM, I've finally got it working on my fifth try.. yes, it took me 5 tries to get this working right. In other news I've decided that SMW's goal posts are extremely boring, and a power star collecting system like the 3D Mario games would be way cooler.. I haven't implemented a three digit counter yet, but it will be done in due time. Here's the crappy goal routine I wrote for y'all.
