SMW Hacking Pet Peeves

I don't know where this thread belongs.
Anyway, what SMW hacking thing annoys you?
In my case: Errors.
The most annoying error for me, is when you rip a GFX, you insert it in your hack, then once you try to play it, the screen turns black.
Another bad error is when i'm making changes to a GFX, then i save it, and when i try to insert the GFX, i click on "Extract GFX".
i just lurk sometimes
Coding something, having it not work, and then spending five hours trying to fix it only to realize the error itself was a label without a colon or something stupid like that.

That, and setting up tilesets. Boring as hell.
When making a hack: When I can't figure out how to make a puzzle/something glitches out completely wrong

When playing a hack: When people don't test their hacks and you get stuck; muncher overload with unfair Kaizo tactics included.

Edit: Basically what S.N.N. said. Spending forever on somethign only to realize the answer was right infront of you.
I hate it when lazy people leave massive graphical problems in the level, such as EXTREMELY obvious cutoff and garbled graphics.
Good fucking bye.

Yeah, so what if I haven't shoveled out my signature yet, I'll get to it later.

When playing a hack, it's the use of objects, blocks, coins, etc. to spell things. One time in the final secret level in SMW was enough, no need to spell out "MAH BOI" or crap like that.

When making a hack, it'd be trying to copy specific colors from one level to another. I have to select it and hit OK to "copy" it, which then prompts me to save the level/palette. When I paste it but I want to go back to see the other level first, I get interrupted with a save prompt. :l Otherwise, I still love everything about hacking, even combining GFX, setting up long ExAnimations, etc. etc. I enjoy what others'd find boring/tedious, I just have an ability to easily perform repetitive and systematic tasks.

When playing a hack, i hate playing levels not made bad on purpose.

When making one, palettes are my worst problem. The gradient tool doesn't make gradients the way it should, and makes the palette look bad.

Making a hack:
Changing one palette, then forgetting which one it is to fix
General Cutoff in ExGfx.
Mixing Backgrounds with Foregrounds
Inserting Xkas only to find that it crashes the game because of freespace problems
Playing a hack:
Massive Slowdown
Hacks that go from easy-easy to rip-out-your-hair-kaizo

To be completely honest, not much about SMW hacking ticks me off very much. I just laugh at nooby hacks because of their obvious messed-upedness. (yes I know that's not a word) If I had to pick one thing that annoys me about SMW hacking, it would probably be cutoff. I'm very sensitive to it now, after being on SMWC for who-knows-how-long. But even cutoff doesn't irritate me a lot.
Spending 10 hours coding something then having it to not work.
Biggest thing is people locking they're hacks. I mean, it's not like t's really a big deal if someone uses your hack for something, or even if they claim it for their own, I mean, what do you get out of it? You aren't getting paid for it so what do you care? This whole Idea is just about having fun.

As an extension of that, people who create things (ASM, graphics, sprites, etcetera) that could easily be released, and yet they decide that they won't let any one else use them. I personally don't use other people's creations very much just because I prefer to be unique, but if you create something, why would you not want other people to use it? I mean, so what if someone makes a terrible hack with it, none of this even matters.
I'm with Ultimaximus and S.N.N. on part of this...copying palettes from one level to another, color by excruciating color, is SO tedious. Of course, now I know how to turn off the save prompt, so that speeds things up a little, but it's still a huge pain. And yes, nonfunctional ASM is probably the single most annoying thing about SMW hacking for me. I also hate setting up backgrounds without a sample level, and copying a lot of Map16 tiles from one page to another, especially if I have to change their palette, is really mind-numbing as well. (Or is that what you meant by setting up tilesets, S.N.N.?) Setting up large amounts of ExAnimation is another tedious task...I had to do 12 separate palette ExAnimations in my vanilla contest level, and I am glad that's over. Another thing for that category is making vanilla cutscenes. Blaaaaahhhh...now that we have Romi's cutscene tool, even though it has its problems as well, I'll never go back.

Most of those things aren't really pet peeves per se, though, more like really boring and annoying work to have to do, except the ASM thing. As I said, coding a sprite or patch and spending hours trying to get it to work without succeeding is my number-one biggest pet peeve as far as SMW hacking goes. Another big one is when two patches don't work together for no apparent reason. You'd be surprised at how easy it is to make a mistake with your freespace, even when you have it all laid out, but when it's not just a freespace error, then it's really annoying. Now that I think about it, unexplainable errors in general drive me nuts. Another thing I find annoying is extensive recoloring of graphics. I've wanted to chase mikeyk with a shovel on various occasions for making some of his sprite graphics use the second half of the palette, which is completely different from the norm in my hack and therefore doesn't look right. It gets especially annoying when those colors are actually semi-necessary, like color 8 on the Para-Beetle (which I have to change to color 7).

Edit to HuFlungDu: Yeah...I'd have to agree with you there, at least partly. I don't believe in locking hacks, although I'd definitely want someone to get permission before taking anything from my hack, and as for not releasing things...depends on what it is and how often that happens. When somebody makes a bunch of stuff that they never plan on releasing, especially if they're not really using it, that is rather irksome.

I'm working on a hack! Check it out here.

It's really just that certain people want their hacks to be unique or they just don't like the idea of other people using their stuff, really. It's THEIR choice whether they want their stuff to be available to the public, y'know. It personally annoys me when use a bunchof custom stuff for their hacks, but it turns out it's ALL made by other people, it just shows that they're too lazy to make anything more than levels.
Good fucking bye.

I know that's what it is, it's just that certain people are stupid and narcissistic (more so than I).

I'm all about that open source man, can't be beat.

Eh, that's really how you've all been copying colors? :/

Guys, just open up 2 copies of LM and the palette editor in each. Holding down the control key the whole time, left click on the color to copy in the first palette editor, right click on where you want to copy it to in the second palette editor. No extra dialogs, no switching between levels, etc.

Um... I have a question...

Maybe we could create a forum for talking about SMW hacking in general, instead of just help forums and hack discussions?

When there is cutoff in a level. I can fix it, but sometimes it gets really annoying. Also when I get the black screen and I have no idea what is wrong.
For me it's switching to another rom because I have to re-import Map16, fix hex edits, patches, music, and sprites. That takes a lot of time and is annoying.
1. ASM. Coding really isn't my thing, and my methods were atrociously inefficient. This lead to many disastrous results and headaches.

2. Conserving MAP16 space. I constantly worried that I would run out of space and would end up screwed. Plus, I was horrifically unorganized with my MAP16 pages. By the end of the hack, it came to the point of sticking my blocks on any random page where there happened to be room.

There's a bunch of other little things here and there, but nothing I consider major. EggVine, on the other hand, ho ho. I could write a book on my pet peeves for that.
