On the level palettes showoff thread, I saw some screenshots that use gradients as the back area color. How exactly do you make one? Is there a tutorial, or does it involve HDMA?

You can make these by creating custom Map16 tiles that use single-color 8x8 tiles (F9 too FF, I believe) and putting them in your BG.

Yes, you can do what WYE suggested, or just learn how to use HDMA (using levelASM). Tutorial here.
