Hi all, and welcome to the Super Mario World Video Challenge! If you've heard about the Super Mario 64 Video Quiz, you know what this is about, but if you haven't, let me run down the rules hallway with you.
Basically, I will give you a challenge, and you must complete it within a deadline. Some challenges are based on speed, while others depend on other aspects of the game. All you have to do to participate is create a video showing you completing the said challenge. Everyone is competing for points, and whoever gets the most points at the very end of the game wins.
There are a few different types of challenges, so let me list them here for you:
1) Timed Challenge: A timed challenge is exactly what it sounds like. You try to be the quickest one to complete the challenge. There is a first, second, and third place in this type of challenge; fourth and beyond with recieve no points.
2) Completion Challenge: A Completion Challenge is very simple. As long as you can execute the goal in the challenge, you will recieve points. There is no time limit, but these are usually much harder than Timed Challenges.
3) Ojective Challenge: An Objective Challenge will warrent you points for how well you completed the challenge. If the challenge was 'Get some coins', you would recieve more points if you collected more coins. You are garenteed at least one point when you take part in this challenge.
4) ????? Challenge: A Timed Challenge; however, placing third gives out the most points while placing first gives not as much. Fourth and lower still receive no points.
But you ask: "How do I participate?" All you have to have is a (clean) Super Mario World ROM, and this SRAM file (it gives you all 96 exits so you don't have to beat all the levels!) If you have an emulator and some way of recording what you do, then you're all set! There is no signing up process at all, so you can join in when you want to! When you first join, you will automatically get 10 points, so as long as you don't lose them, you will never have 0 points.
Unlike the SM64 video Quiz, the SMW Video Challenge will have two categories in which you submit your videos. Each is explained below:
Non-TAS Not Tool Assisted: This category will be for the people who aren't great at playing the game under speed and using savestates. This is you playing real-time, and no cheating at all. If any suspision arises that your video is TASed after you submit it into this category, it will go under review, and if it is TASed, you will be disqualified from the round, plus points from your previous entry will be erased.
TAS Tool Assisted: This category is for all you freaks that make TAS's of all those Kaizo hacks and whatnot. You will be able to complete the challenge Tool Assisted, and be able to abuse the game a bit more. Because of this however, the challenges may be slightly tweaked to give this category a jump on its difficulty since, well, almost anything is possible with TAS.
You may enter in both categories, but if you somehow win in both, you will only get one trophy to allow another person a trophy.
Simple Rules to get them out of the way:
*No cheat codes or editing the ROM, or your entry will be disqualified.
*Videos must be entered before the deadline. I'll give anywhere from 3 days to a week for you guys to make videos, so this shouldn't really be a problem.
*No copying other people's strategies! I know I can't really prevent this from happening, but it is a lot more fun when you can figure out how to do things on your own. You can post your video nearer to the deadline to prevent this from happening to you, however.
*You video must be posted to the public. YouTube and Viddler are great examples, but other websites are fine. Post your video (link, NOT embedded) here once it is uploaded.
*All videos must be new, so no using your video you uploaded 2 years ago doing the same thing.
*More may be added later.
This was created to be a fun thing to do, and to have something to do when you're bored. Please don't make this too serious. I have the right to take away any of your points, so if you behave dickishly because someone 'may' have stole your idea, there may be a penalty. If you are caught doing this multiple times, you could be banned from the whole game! You don't want to be left out of this awesome game for a whole year-and-a-half, do you?
Also, DON'T let this competition drag you behind in other events such as SMWCP and C3. Those things are WAY more important than this, so if you are involved with SMWCP and/or are plainning to attend C3, work on that instead! I don't want to be the blame for people that didn't finish their C3 project in time. D:
So that's about it. Look forward to the next post to see the current scores and challenge! Have fun!
