Is the Imagination Dead?

I've heard it said before, from teachers, parents, professors, and even peers, that people these days just don't have the imagination and creativity past generations possessed. Some people blame computers and video-games, and they say that people no longer need to think because machines think for them.

Well, is this true? Has humanity lost its imagination, or are we more creative now then we used to be? And for the purpose of this discussion, imagination is defined as artistic--visual, musical, and written--creativity.
Yes
Well, I certainly have myself some imagination... :)
Just visiting...

Machines think for us? We're the ones building the damned things. We're creative enough to make people lose their creativity then? I'm confusing myself...

Who knows when I'll have
something to put here.

Let me put it this way. Once, children used to build model airplanes and imagine them flying through the sky. Now, though some children still do this, many will just log on to YouTube and watch an airplane flying, or even play Starfox and fly a plane themselves. They don't have to use their mind as much, and the mind is thus malnourished.

Well everything has already been imagined I guess. Sad but true.

Who knows when I'll have
something to put here.

why should we have imagination? there are people to do that for us.
now i dont believe this is true, nor have i ever been told this. it depends on the person.
and because it was going to happen sooner or later,

ask me if i give a f*ck...
I think we haven't, because people who are playing video games usually have more imagination then others.
I mean, a great example had to be the classic atari, no?

SMWHacking? I rest my case.
SMWCentral? I leave it to rest.

Half the ideas I come up with I don't act on simply due to having another. And I know I'm not the only one. So no, I don't think our imaginations are dying. In fact, having the basics imagined already is just stepping up our imaginations to the next level.
All though, I don't know if the imagination is really dead, but I have a lot of it.

I mean, I could think up something that would put me in this special "trance" for like half n hour.

Especially during boring school classes. >_>
Depends..If kids spends they're whole life playing video-games and being on the computer instead of having some creative activities like drawing, creating stories or making some games to play with they're litle bro then yes, it will kill his imagination.

But as long as school exists that won't happen, besides, playing some video-games can help you to be more creative if you are a SMW hacker.
I think that everyone who is a member of SMWCentral is creative, and such was one of the main reasons I joined the site.

Creativity is a gift, one of the human race's greatest. Amazing things can happen when the imagination is harnessed, and I hope that future generations will continue to dream and create rather than rely on others to do it for them--for if no one is dreaming, no one can benefit.
I think imagination is just a part of the human brain. I believe that it is inevitable to discard our imagination/have no imagination at all. I just can't see that happening.
My blog. I could post stuff now and then

My Assembly for the SNES tutorial (it's actually finished now!)
I think anyone has a bit of imagination, but people show it in different ways. I think it's wrong to state people (even individuals) have lost their imagination - you might just not see it.
Building airplane models is not something I'd call 'actual' anymore (but I guess it was just an example) - a lot of people are on the computer these days. But are they only there just because of playing games? No. They design things, too. And now I'm not only looking at SMWCentral - look in the bigger picture. Executable files, providing information together - Wikipedia is a perfect example right here, but there's many, many more places -, etc.
As stated before, I don't see the human race losing their imagination soon, if ever.

I agree. Despite everything some people have told me, I believe that creativity and imaginativity are still strong. Perhaps, then, what I'm speaking of is a paradigm shift.

Once, people had to pretend and make believe, but computers and the Internet have given us a new 'reality', where our ideas can come into existence. The one problem I do see, however, is when people do not have access to computers, television, and other facets of the new era of imagination.

I'm a reader and can often simply lose myself in a good story. Now, I don't think that there are any less devoted readers out there these days, but I often hear my classmates say that they hate reading because they can't 'see' what's happening like they can with videos on YouTube.

I suppose that I'm not really afraid that the human imagination is dying. My fear is probably that, because of our changing, technological society, our creativity is relying on computers and technology; what happens, then, when this technology is taken away from us?
Imagination? Dying? No way. As Camerin Neede and various others have stated creativity and imagination are still alive and thriving. I mean to use an example we're all familiar with (SMW rom hacking). I've been at it for a little over a year now and the things that I've seen/ played still amaze me as everytime I play a hack there is something new and/ or exiting. This new concept whatever it may be would clearly reflect that person's creative ability.

In terms of real life, same answer. A friend of mine is living proof of it. Every time we have some form of group discussion, that is with all of my friends, he is always able to come up with some unique idea or way of thinking that none of us (the other three of us) would never have thought of. To add to this he is still a hardcore gamer, well not the extreme hardcore as some people I know, but he still plays video games quite frequently.

I think that we will fall back in our old routine at that point, eventually trying to re-invent something like this, or something better. The human race exists to develop - we have always been developing, and I don't see why we will ever stop doing that. (Well, until we ourselves stop existing.)

Oh god...

I have a teacher that, not only says "imagination dead due of PC, Videogames, TV", but that they ruined also the visual ability: now everyone cannot see in 3D and so we do smash-ups. It may be true, but she cannot blame videogames, but the humanity himself, which can't control his own creations. I have heard stories about this teacher that tell she destroyed her son's videogame for this reason.

Well, i think this matter is just a commonplace! Those elements also made my imagination more poweful. If Rayman didn't exist, i don't see how i could have created Conte de Contis or Dinomar <_>
If That Sbragi Girl didn't exist, i don't see how could i have created Grisba! If Dr. Cortex didn't exist, i don't see how i could have created Dr.B.B.Queer (see my screenshots of my new hack)
Everything begins from an horrible copy, plagiarism, until it gets more original!

Don't listen to those antiquate moralists. If you don't think this, it is not so.

I think imagination is just a synonym for "creativity". Imagination is dead if there is no inspiration or "spontaneous thoughts"* to fuel it.

But one would assume imagination is dead if no one is showing off what their imagination in the first place.

*(Or is that just me?)

But yeah:

(Oh come on, it had to happen sometime)

We are NOT losing are imagination, at least, there are a good handful of us who are not, take me for example, I play video games nonstop, yet I have dreams of starting my own 3rd party video game company so I can use my imagination to create video games. But I will agree that there are to many people today with no brains at all(cough cough George Bush cough cough).
Imagination will only die if we ALLOW it to die, which I think not very many people are letting happen, at least we from the 90's. Children born into THIS era, I feel bad for them because they are going to be relying on Youtube for everything when they are 5 and just starting out in kindergarten.

THAT is EXACTLY the reason why I want to become a game designer--be living proof that imagination does NOT have to die. I don't care if I have to be mocked by people I graduated with, as long as I work toward what I believe in. Me and my best friend both believe in this, we're very imaginative and creative people. My hack is both our storyline, anyway!
