DSU Mario World: Being Renamed soon, mega update with lots of stuff!

Standard

Yes, it's technically the same hack someone called kyledude92107 started about two years ago, and it's the same one I've been hoping raocow is to play when it's finished. It's a kind of compilation/team/collab hack by the members of a website I manage, and is made by mariowings77, ninjablooper, Yoshi987, myself, kyledude92107, RomHackMax and levels by people like LinksDarkArrows.

It's kind of difficult, in the same sense as games by black (whoever makes those Koutai games raocow plays sometimes), so it'll probably never exactly be released here due to some levels being insanely difficult. Still, it's got custom graphics, music, sprites, blocks, ASM, overworld sprites, cluster sprites and overworld, so it's not exactly a Youtube quality game.

Screenshots:

Yes, the images are hotlinked. But I own the bandwidth they use, so I don't particularly care about that.

Remember a few things though... I haven't added most of the foreground or background GFX because this computer doesn't seem to work with that part of Lunar Magic, so it's waiting someone else on the team who does add said GFX. The enemy/sprite/character GFX except for the bosses and Magikoopa will change before release and many glitches like lack of animation have been fixed since the videos. Again, it's not a SMW Central submission because of Kaizo type difficulty, but we hope to make it really, really neat and professional regardless.

Oh, and:

1. Every ghost house, castle and fortress will have a custom boss or three.

2. Every level will have custom graphics, music and sprites at least.

3. I need to stop adding custom bosses now, because it will be about 2020 before the thing's released at this rate. Seriously, I look for near enough any open source custom boss sprites I can find, and I'm running out of room in the sprites txt file.

Thank you. I'm trying to help make it so the game has more interesting boss battles than many hacks without needing a Brutal Mario level of ASM knowledge.

What the hell is up with Roy Koopa? Your custom bosses don't have a walking animation but they walk. It kind of looks stupid to have your bosses walk but not actual move. Maybe if you could make your bosses look like they walk, it would look better IMO. I like the OW. It has some errors, but it looks pretty good.
It's in testing, so I'm using temporary graphics without animations. Or for some of the first, because I didn't figure out how to get the graphics working right until I'd made the first few. But I'll be making him walk properly soon.

I'm all up for suggestions to make my Dark Star, Mad Jack and KAOS sprites walk though. I don't think those enemies really had many animations for walking in their original games.

And thanks for the overworld advice, although if I posted a full screenshot, would anyone point out any cut off to fix?

looks like you stole a sprite, and are all the bosses noobie boss?

anyway, the OW looks pretty good, yet I still find myself completely uninterested in this hack.

Which sprite was stolen? I'll edit it. And no, not all bosses are Ultimate N00b Boss, one person I know is a programmer who still needs to send me the two or three completely custom bosses they made.

But hey, everyone likes different hacks, so if anyone doesn't like this one (and remember, this topic shows about 5% of it and 1% of the background/foreground graphics and 0.2% of the music), that's perfectly fine. If anyone wants any recommendations for hacks that aren't like this one, I've played a few from a certain Japanese site that are excellent (not VIP 5, Brutal Mario or Mario Fantasy).

I would be willing to point out cutoff and perspective errors.
I have rarel seen custom bosses in hacks, so this may be good.
Anyway, you should not be able to die in the intro and die at the start due to slow reaction, that is unfair and may get your hack removed on SMWC.
I am also willing to point out any cutoff in the overworld too, when you poist a complete screenshot
This is a really nice kaizo hack! I don't like kaizo hacks. But if I did, I'd be all about this one! Nice music, nice GFX. Crazy levels. Good OW, apart from a few errors, but hey, I know it's still beta.

Thanks. Here's the overworld to point out errors in, and I've already seen some myself:

Part of a Fortress:

Section 1:

Section 2:

It's a layer 2 level, and you can probably guess how it works.

Another level:

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/ftrZH_iAWdQ&hl=en_GB&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/ftrZH_iAWdQ&hl=en_GB&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Needs foreground and background graphics. Music by LinksDarkArrows, and it's meant to be repetitive because it's based on this:

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/6Atv7UWUK_A&hl=en_GB&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/6Atv7UWUK_A&hl=en_GB&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

haha, this hack is awsome :)

but for the difficulty the bosses are a little too easy, just to make it familiat with the level you may wanna add like a thwomp or podoboo or somin just to get in the players way

otherwise i love it xD

was the magikoopa gfx replacment suppost be Carpaccio from Wario Master of Disguise by any chance? It looks a lot like him- maybe you should do him as a boss next. If so, you should do a race like in Wario: MOD.

This.

Except the OW has super obvious errors, like the fact that mario can walk through lava and a fort is in the side of a cliff (All on the Boswer Submap).
Even for a kaizo hack the level design isn't too good. It seems all over the place and not even too difficult. The bosses all animate funny and their attacks seem awkward. The music and graphics are good, but nothing else stands out too much. This hack seems way too early in development to have a thread. Don't give up, just take my advice and learn from it.

EDIT:

I pointed out the Main OW errors. Sorry if the circles are hard to see. I probably missed some stuff.

Who knows when I'll have
something to put here.

Yeah, good catch. You're the first person to recognise the character as someone from Wario Master of Disguise (at least without me having to refer to Mario Wiki before hand). Him as a boss is a fairly good idea, although I'd personally prefer to fix the Magikoopa palettes first (it's a hex edit, right?)

The arenas are mainly for testing purposes. You're right, they're too basic at the moment, and they'll be changed for the actual release to be a tad more complicated and have stuff like layer 2 obstacles to cause an inconveniance.

Thanks for the advice everyone!

Thanks for the advice, and that will be fixed. Although again, the errors may seem obvious, it would help drastically if you actually pointed them out so the overworld could be improved. So far I've learnt not to use forts on cliffs or to make Mario swim through lava, and I think I need an outline at the base of said cliff to the right. That kind of advice is really valuable if given.

I haven't showed the hardest aspects. Those parts are hard to the point people here would say I was the anti christ for posting them, and one of them (not by me, world 2's castle) has been said to be one of the most difficult Kaizo type levels in existance. Just that comment should a tad scary. It made many Kaizo players quit out of frustration.

I also didn't show Power Cut Peril. There's a bad video online of part of it, but it doesn't illustrate it well at all because flash video quality is awful when it comes to dark levels. It has various lights flashing on and off in intervals of mere seconds. And has been feared by a lot of people who've tried it. Again, it's hard to show this, but it's damn hard.

The levels shown are not average difficulty. They're pretty much minimal baseline difficulty. They're world 1, part of a world 2 fortress and a world 3/4 level I like more for gimmicks than insane challenge. Keep in mind these videos are also Tool Assisted Runs, they don't show an average player dying or such like. They're either pre recorded or done with slow down, save states and rewinds to the point you'd use them on say... one of MoltovMarioWorld's hacks.

Level design wise... is more subjective. Yes, it's arguably a bit more linear than most SMW Central hosted hacks, but I as a person, and other people I'm working with, don't generally like puzzles much. Nor do the general public if a certain Sean Malstrom and his work is to be believed. If you like freeform, open/non linear games, this game will likely never be something you'll find the most enjoyable. I don't have many recommendations for those people (maybe play a Metroid or Castlevania game, or La Mulana?), but maybe a certain hack you see a few people like GVirusG playing on Youtube would be better (it's very much non linear, free form and exploration based).

I've also not shown some of the better levels, nor some of the levels which are going to be submitted a bit later. World 2 and 4's castles aren't shown here, and I consider them fairly well designed.

There's also arguably a bit of rail roading going on the design of this, I'm trying to get LPers not to get sidetracked by shiny mini games and alternate routes. I'm trying to time the level distribution so the kinds of levels the team of people behind this hack like get seen approx once per video.

Apologies for the rambling on and somewhat non relevant stuff, I have a tendency to get sidetracked if writing something longer than two paragraphs.

That's being fixed in most cases (graphics for bosses and attacks). The Boom Boom graphics for instance are now animated, and the ones for the other bosses will have better animations as well. It's hard for some, because some are custom sprite graphics that I originally didn't design with animations.

Don't worry about it, any kind of constructive criticism is valuable. That's why I can't rely on Youtube commenters. And yes, it's still early in development... kind of, although I made the topic because the other contributors who said they were going to post about it haven't done so yet.

Edit: Sorry about the overworld comments, your diagram didn't show up originally or when I was writing the post.

It certainly pleases me to see that you are significantly more polite and respectable than some of your colleagues who have registered here (ninjablooper comes to mind). It is also nice to see that you can take all sorts of criticism.

I've seen bits and pieces of this hack over at the DSU forums, and it's shaping up to be pretty decent. I'm not a huge fan of the overworld, but everything I've wanted to say about it has been pointed out. On the positive side, it is quite busy, and it looks like a lot is going on. Overall though, it feels really square and shapeless - it could really use a tad more variation. The level design seems rather decent as well, though since most of your screenshots were of bosses, it is hard to formulate a full opinion.

Looking forward to seeing more though - collab hacks are always rather interesting.
Okay, this should fix 99.9% of pointed out overworld issues:

Fixed:

More decoration where pointed out.

All cut off I could find fixed.

Mario doesn't swim through lava or walk across trees in world 8.

Any remaining problems with it should be circled about now.

As for some other levels. Well, here's the hardest, and it's hard enough to qualify as Platform Hell:

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/RQL6THgXcNI&hl=en_GB&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/RQL6THgXcNI&hl=en_GB&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/2yzE4li5Xg0&hl=en_GB&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/2yzE4li5Xg0&hl=en_GB&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Note: Graphics weren't edited yet. Background will be fixed, and the Reznor battle shown was replaced by fights against Bogmire and Kamek in sequential order.

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/NobNUhBaKOo&hl=en_GB&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/NobNUhBaKOo&hl=en_GB&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

(part of a level which may not be included)

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/8l9zVTSCprU&hl=en_GB&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/8l9zVTSCprU&hl=en_GB&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Yeah, again, graphics weren't edited at this time, and issues existed that were fixed. Big Boo boss replaced by second boss from Super Mario Land with a Mario TKO type battle gimmick.

<object width="560" height="340"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/NZQ2vsoldcY&hl=en_GB&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/NZQ2vsoldcY&hl=en_GB&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="560" height="340"></embed></object>

^It's lighter in game, but because it's to be very dark, it goes black in a low quality youtube video. If anyone wants the actual level to try out to prove this, just ask.

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/RpgehP2lamM&hl=en_GB&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/RpgehP2lamM&hl=en_GB&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

^ A boss. It fires more custom sprites than that, and has more attacks, but I only showed about a 10th of the battle to keep it secret. Sprite memories issues are now fixed, but the sprite I used as the base doesn't give a limiter to how many sprites it generates for some reason (I should ask iceguy about that problem, it's aggravating if you use any boss that generates any form of sprite).

Sorry about the behaviour of anyone else here. I'll admit, there is a site bias where I'm admin that the internet should be more open and less restrictive in general, and I'm someone who does think people should know about where to get all the Japanese sprites/graphics/music/hacks (because I compiled a list elsewhere of every single one of these I could find), but yeah, some people have had bad experiences with communities in the past and end up acting immature in the process.

I'm trying to vary the overworld, although I wasn't the original designer so it might seem overboard me taking near full control of all this stuff. There's a pretty long story behind this whole thing, and it's been in flux for about two years. It was originally a few worlds. Then eight worlds. Then nine worlds. Then five worlds. Then six worlds. Then five worlds again. People have come and left and dropped out altogether at different times, so it's kinda chaos organising everything. The overworld has been edited since your post.

Level design wise... yeah, sorry about it mainly showing bosses, it's because as a Mario game player, I like boss battles and castles more than grass levels and pretty much any other kind. It's like why all my articles on VIP 5 and such like show bosses and castle levels rather than the rest of the game. But more levels will be shown, many normal types.

RANDOM INFO TIME: Raocow doesn't play Kaizo hacks.

Looks like a great start, if the hack's intended to be Kaizo! I'm personally in the area between the people who like Kaizo and who doesn't like Kaizo, but this looks like it may be fun to play!
Good fucking bye.
