SMWC Idol, 2!: It's over already?!

MusicRulesResults

Since brawl was an actual game. Yes, it's music is allowed (even the remixes in it).

I actually forgot about the & command. Any Pitch Bend technique will be accepted though.
seems like a cool idea to bad I don't know how to port and I just got got back into smw hacking
Okay, I'm in...for better or worse.

Good luck to everyone who plans on being a part of this! And to those porters out there who don't think you're good enough, try anyway.
I really hope I can find time to enter this. I definitely want to.

And...at the risk of sounding redundant, will any of the future rounds consist of creating an original song? That is definitely my strong suit.

My life has not involved SMW hacking for the past several months...I still love you guys though!
Enter the musical world of Moot Booxlé.
My last name is pronounced Boox-LEE, like...um...Bruce Lee. Check this out.

EDIT: I removed all of the content here.

I might put some sort of signature here once. I guess.
It doesn't just take brains to enter a contest--it takes a bit of courage, too, and acceptance if you don't win first prize.

Please, everyone, join the fun! If your fear of losing is keeping you from entering, know that we all have to lose sometime, and we all have to win sometime, too. And the more people that join, the better for underdog musicians like me who have to go up against pros!
I would join, but I'm absolutely horrendous at making music. I can port simple songs, but that's it. I think I'll give it a go, though, since I have nothing better to do.

Edit: Could someone explain the rules of this round a bit more clearly? I'm kind of confused as of what to do at this point.
The rules:

Each week, people submit songs to the five judges. Each Saturday, the songs are judged and the highest-scoring one is announced and featured. After, oh, ten weeks, the highest-average song will be declared SMWC Idol. Anyone can join at any time, and anyone can join more than once.

The song you're going to port should be as accurate as possible and be of submission quality (looped, l-commanded, and free of functionality errors). In the song, at least one channel must use p5,60; at least one channel must use N-SPC $ED $5C $A9; and at least one channel must use at least two pitch bends (either through hex or the & command).

The songs will be judged out of ten:
4 points for accuracy,
5 for quality,
and 1 for whether or not it would suit a SMW hack.

...That's about it, I think.
Thanks for explaining. I get it now.

Anyways, I finished my song and sent it to the judges. I'll post it somewhere when I'm done, so you guys can hear it.

All judges note that:
1. The song sounds better in-game
2. This song requires N-SPC (this should have been obvious, but whatever)

Edit: Crap, I just realized that it had to be a port, not a composition. Sorry for the confusion, please ignore my PM judges.
I am just going to bump this thread to remind everyone that this contest is open to the entire userbase. Obviously, if you are brand new to porting/composing music for SMW, you might be at something of a disadvantage, but sometimes simple songs are better (just like in real life). Show us what you can do!

[?] Miscellaneous Helpful Hints
If I moderated your hack, there was apparently a 90 percent chance it was rejected.
I have posted all 8 rounds in advanced in the first post. If you're too lazy to look, here:

Round 1: Commands Challenge
- Create a port with a channel using p5,60 throughout, a channel with $ED $5C $A9 used throughout, and a channel with at least two pitch bends (use may fulfill more than one requirement on a channel)
- Samples may not be used.

Round 2: Key Challenge (B minor)
- Create a custom Composition (yes, that means an original song), using the key of B minor (B, C♯, D, E, F♯, G, and A).
- Samples may not be used.

Round 3: Samples Challenge
- Create a port using a sample bank that will be provided at a later date. At least two of the custom samples must be used, though you may use the other custom samples in the bank or change them back to their original SMW instruments.
- Additional Samples may not be used.

Round 4: Remix Texts Challenge
- Take at least 2 text files of currently ported songs on SMWC and combine them together to form a remix.
- Samples may not be used, even if they were used in the text file you chose.

Round 5: Time Sig Challenge (9/4)
- Create a custom Composition (yes, that means an original song), using the time signature of 9/4.
- Samples may be used.

Round 6: 8 Bit to 16 bit Challenge
- Create a remix of an NES or Gameboy song in 16 bit.
- Samples may be used.

Round 7: Instruments from Hell Challenge
- Create a port using only the following instruments: @0,@2,@5,@7,@8,@9,@12,@15,@17
- Samples may not be used.
- Percussion instruments may also be used.

Round 8: Mario game Challenge
- Create a port of a song from one of the following games.
-Super Mario RPG
-Paper Mario
-Super Mario 64
-Super Mario Sunshine
-New Super Mario Bros. Wii
- Samples may be used.
All right. I have a couple of questions about some of the round requirements, though:

Round 5 - Do the measures have to be subdivided in any particular way? Like, do they need to be split up as 3/3/3, or 5/4, or 2/2/2/1, or anything like that?

Round 6 - Is the resulting port supposed to sound 8-bit, too? Or is it like those "8-bit to 16-bit remixes" you sometimes see on YouTube (for example, this)?

Round 7: That means no percussion aside from @12, too, I assume? (No other percussion instruments were listed.)

----------------

I'm working on a hack! Check it out here. Progress: 64/95 levels.
R5: No
R6: Make it 16 bit sounding
R7: You can use percussion
Alright...I just got finished with my port. Today's the deadline...I'm assuming that I still have a few hours to submit it?

I should get a new layout.

Probably won't, though.
Okay, another question. Is the length of a song much of a factor? I mean, would a 30-second port be subject to harsher judging than one that is 1 minute and 20 seconds long? If so, that would affect some of my song choices, particularly round 6.

That should answer your question Immanuclearphysicist.
I have a small question about round 2. If the key of the song is to be in B Minor, are we allowed to use short departures and motifs from the key, or do we have to stay in B Minor for the entire song?
I'm curious to know that too, actually. Keeping it primarily in B minor with a few switches would be pretty cool, but forcing it to be in B minor for the entire song on every single channel could get rather .. well, difficult?

That would be the point of it. It's a challenge, so it should be difficult.

Which, not surprisingly enough, still doesn't answer mine or Camerin Needle's question.
