Round 8: Can it be a remix?

you can join in any of the rounds, i recommend entering in round 5 first so you get a feel for unrestraint, after all, you get 2 weeks
I have a couple of questions about round 4.

Firstly, are we even having a fourth round, or are we just leaping into round 5? I only ask because no details of round 4 have been posted, and the minisite only mentions round 5.

Secondly, if we are running round 4, then how much of each original text file do we need to include in the remix? Is one channel from each sufficient (adding in background channels and whatnot)?
im sure were having round 4, and im curious about those other parts as well. i also dont intend to lose out any further to you camerin :3
Yeah, we will run all of the rounds. I'll get round 4's page up once I start getting round 4 submissions. I do believe one "important" channel from a text is sufficient enough and the rest of the channels can be from another text. You should probably put down which texts you remixed so the judges can compare.

(Important: Anything not really brief or obscure. Preferably plays throughout most or all of the song.)

I mention round 5 now because I really want to hype it up for participation given how accessible such a lenient standard makes it. Rounds 2 and 3 have had rather disappointing turnout with no more than four participants, and I don't think remixing is something as many people can get comfortable with. Sorry if there was any confusion about that.

Also remember: You can submit things from any round that isn't closed at any time before the deadline, even round 8 stuff. I reckon you do that to avoid the deadline rush if you have the time to finish it beforehand. :)

Edit: Copypasta'd round overviews onto the site.

Thanks for clearing that up.

Yes, remixing is...difficult. I'll still try my hand at it, and I hope others do, too.
Wait, for round 4, we need an entire channel from another song? I was just going to take three ports or so and combine and modify parts here and there.

Also, I'm still wondering what is allowed in round 6. One, do 8-bit games that are for other systems (although they may be styled like the NES or Game Boy), such as Mega Man 9, count? And two, does it have to be essentially identical to the original as far as the number of channels, rhythms, harmony, etc. goes, or are we allowed a little bit of artistic license? (For example, is it permissible to add a bass line in a song that didn't originally have one?) I just don't know for sure how broad your use of the term "remix" is.

----------------

I'm working on a hack! Check it out here.
You bring up a fair point in splicing channels; if it's significant enough length that you can easily tell what port the segment is from then yes, you are allowed to do that.

I'd also say on round 6, it doesn't need to be restricted to the number of channels that were in the original - you can add new things like a bass line or chords. However, it remains restricted to games that were on the NES or Game Boy, so Mega Man 9 won't count. This one will be judged on an ingenuity-based rubric too rather than accuracy because it's a remix and not a strict port. You can also arrange the song as you like as long as it's recognizable what song it is being remixed.

stupid question needing an answer,
how can i tell if something i did turns out to sound 16bit? or does 16bit mean not all digital beep like?
Super Mario Bros. is 8-bit. Super Mario All-Stars is 8-bit.

It just refers to a higher quality of instrument.

What I think should be done for round 6 is exactly what Nintendo did with SMAS--take 8-bit songs and revitalise them with then-modern samples.
i guess im gonna do this one i enjoyed during childhood and make it more revamped :3

Oops...I meant 16-bit there.
ROUND 3 SCORES ARE IN

1st - Camerin Neede's port of Yoshi's Story's "Yoshies in the Wind" (44.9)
2nd - S.N.N.'s port of the SNES version of Tales of Phantasia's "Fighting of the Spirit" (41.4)
3rd - omegazeroINFI's port of Pokemon Mystery Dungeon 2's "Dialga's Theme" (39.5)
4th - imamelia's port of Megaman X4's "Storm Owl" (36.1)

Get them here.

This puts Camerin Neede in the points race with a whopping 125 points, with S.N.N. and Jimmy52905 neck-and-neck in second and third in the mid 80's range, and don't count omegazeroINFI and imamelia out just yet, either. Newcomers to the Idol will have it tough trying to catch up to Camerin at this point if they hope to win the high score component.

With wins, it's still anybody's game - maybe even yours, should you choose to enter. Camerin, Jimmy, and S.N.N. all have one win to their names, and five rounds remain.

seacrest out

...I don't believe it! No, seriously, I don't.

Congratulations to the other three! I haven't had time to listen to your songs, yet, but I will.
now what did damn tell you about winning this round?
like i said, i dont intend to lose out to you, ill work with all i got to catch up to you.

on a side note, dots's judgement was what kept my score lower then snn, to me, that is a personal victory :D

and lastly, O_O SNN MADE AN ADSR MISTAKE?!!!
I'd just like to say something for anyone thinking about joining mid-competition. You might not want to join because the top three competents have high scores, but you should still join. After all, sometimes, the easiest way to win a competition is to compete in as many rounds as possible.

As the minisite says, "Don't make shit and you'll do fine."

So, yeah, join in!
Yeah, that was sort of a rushjob since I had very little time between work and SMWCP last week. The pitch bends in FoTS are awful.

Congrats CN!

(also update the topic)
Thanks!

I'll get my R4 submission in soon. I just have to write it. Being a remix, I already have two channels done, so I'm on my way.

Also, does my R3 piece get automatically sent to the Music section, or do I have to upload it myself?

upload it yourself, I'll do the rest from there.
