Edit: Closing this since there's a thread for demo 147.

---

I originally posted this at C3, but there were only a few hours remaining by that point, so I don't think very many people saw it.

It's not a problem to re-post it here (just in case people have any comments), right?

---

Edit:

To activate the red switch, you have to land on the actual switch (which is found in #4 Star Road). The blocks will not become solid otherwise.

(I copied this here because it seems a lot of people are having trouble in that portion of the game.)

(OK, here goes...)

Welcome to Zeldara's Glitch City! It's full of blatant level edits and graphical glitches! Yay! (It's also somewhat of a puzzle hack.)

So, what is this?

This is my first SMW hack. It's a joke hack. In it, I've tried to include as many glitches (mainly graphical glitches) as I can think of (with the exception of glitches that require exact timing or precision, or glitches that force a reset).

Note that "joke hack" is not the same as "intentionally bad hack". My goal for this hack is to be very strange and unconventional, but still be hopefully well-designed and fun.

After all, nothing says that a good hack absolutely needs to have any particular characteristics, right?

(Of course, you'll have to judge for yourself whether it's good or not.)

Anyway, this demo contains 6 1/4 worlds, with a total of 52 exits.

Knowledge of SMW glitches is not required to play this hack, though it certainly helps. (Any required glitches are either explained in the hack, are hinted towards in the hack, or have a good chance of occurring unintentionally while trying to solve a puzzle.)

Features:

- 6 1/4 worlds
- 52 total exits
- Plenty of blatant level edits
- Intentionally glitched graphics
- Unusual level timers
- Some puzzles (which I have been told are much more difficult than they seem)
- Plenty of message blocks (with a wide variety of messages)
- A storyline (it's pretty simple and nonsensical, but it does exist)
- Various graphical edits
- Modified bosses
- Required use of glitches
- Custom music in World 5 and beyond
- Strange overworld maps
- Strange overworld events (which are also sped up)
- A "new" and somewhat glitchy power-up: the Luigi Flower
- Life maximum is 127
- Course clear message, status bar, save prompts, etc. are modified
- A flying forest that is neither a forest nor flying
- ExGFX (it's rare and very subtle though)
- Strange nonsensical version numbers (the first number is the serious one, which only increases; the rest are random)
- Lots and lots of hex-edits to make the game stranger and glitchier

And a video of Chaotic Island 5, a World 5 level.

Enjoy!

(Special thanks to TheMariofan1000 a.k.a. Error 52 for testing/playing through most of the first demo (demo 54).)

I hope you're not planning on submitting this. Cutoff alone is enough to get a hack rejected, but having glitches intentionally? Good luck, buddy.
Joke hacks got old a really long time ago. Just saying.

And that's why we all have a personal file bin.

I'll probably submit the final version anyway to see what kind of rejection message I get (hopefully an entertaining one).

(Though Chaos CompleXX did get accepted, so it has to be possible for me to create a joke hack good enough for SMWCentral, right?)

Isn't there some rule about posting in a hack topic just to complain about the hack?

Edit: I re-checked the forum rules. There is.

I do find though that most joke hacks are just people trying to pass off their own bad hacks as joke hacks by adding cutoff, annoying palettes, and bad grammar. (Joke hacks need to be entertaining, you know, not annoying and unfair...)

I hope my hack isn't like those-- this is an intentionally strange and unconventional hack, not an intentionally bad hack. (I've tested the levels a lot, included a difficulty curve, tried to have a good variety of glitchy level gimmicks without overusing "random tiles everywhere", and included message blocks that actually have good grammar. And I'm not a mid-level-savestate user, so you won't find unfair levels in anything I make.)

(Now to wait for someone to make a comment showing they've played at least some of the hack...)

Too bad joke hacks and intentional glitches don't cut it anymore. I used to want to have a couple of levels like such in my old hack's prototype, but I guess if I wanted to submit my work, I shouldn't go for it.

I remember this online video game "Stinkoman 20X6" that actually had a "glitched" level known as Negative Zone, which had previous level elements mixed up together.

Your layout has been removed.
Cutoff, glitched graphics, forced deaths and Glitched timers and coin counters.

At least TRY to make a good hack.
none of you guys seem to get what he's trying to do! it's glitchy but it all looks very intentional. It isn't a youtube hack.

And that makes 3.

Anyway, I'm pretty sure Error 52 was being sarcastic there (check the end of this topic's first post).

(Edit: I've defended Error 52! What have I done?!)

What's a YouTube hack?

–=–=–=–=–=–=–
Alyssa's Unlikely Trap - Zeldara's Glitch City
A Youtube hack refers to hacks that are of low quality, such as extreme cutoff, bad palettes, boring level design, and the like. They tend not to be intentionally bad.

For some examples, the first few levels of Raocow's Vanilla contest playthrough, most hacks chainfire9001 plays, etc.

--------------------
Whether it's intentional or not, it just doesn't look like very much fun to have glitches.

That's my opinion, don't try and tell me it's against the rules to say that.
I've played quite a lot of this hack now, but I don't really like it. The glitched graphics, OW, etc. create a lot of confusion on what the player has to do next.
I liked some ideas, like the tilted castle, but I find it to be a bit too confusing.
Also when using lots of glitches and very fixed paths you should avoid breaks, I believe I broke the hack at least twice, which leads to even more confusion...

--------------------
Of course you should fight fire with fire, you should fight everything with fire.

Oooh look at my userbar!

Sadistic Designer - testing Pit without tools.
In all seriousness, the OW is pretty confusing. (Extreme example is world 5)

OK. Being someone who watches a lot of YouTube videos (including those recent raocow videos), I'm certainly familiar with hacks like those (though only from videos, as I wouldn't bother playing any).

I know things like this aren't fun for everyone. It's fun for me though, so I'm sharing it with those who do like it. (By the way, that can be true of any hack-- if people like it, there are people who don't. (Also, thank you for being more constructive.))

Well, I do check for breaks involving any glitches/tricks that I know of, but I probably won't find everything on my own. (I'll probably ask a few people experienced with breaking hacks to be beta testers for the final version.)

Can you PM me with the breaks you found? (There's one (TAS-only as far as I know) that I included intentionally-- this hack is designed to be played unassisted, or at least played without spamming the load savestate button.)

World 5 or World 4?

World 5 doesn't seem that confusing to me (though I know everything seems more obvious to the designer). There's one intentionally incorrectly drawn path, but the rest should be evident enough.

World 4, though, I'm sort of concerned about...

After the cave of 3s. I just found it confusing.

Also, in my opinion, if your good enough to pull off the damn glitch, then you deserve to skip the hack.

(I mean insane glitches like walljumping)

If you found World 5's map confusing, you'll probably be completely disoriented by World 4...

As for walljumping and other frame-specific glitches that can be used just about anywhere, I'll be basically treating them as if they don't exist, unless they allow skipping several worlds or something.

(Now I wonder if anyone will find a way to skip a switch in the current demo-- Since this is a demo, I intentionally didn't include floating doors on switch blocks for all 4 switches, just in case...)

Edit: Level 12...

***PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT***

I am a crusader for joke hacks that DON'T suck, as is probably apparent to everyone who knows me by now.
I have spent MANY countless hours working on a joke hack that is actually FUN, and is actually full of jokes, rather than just spam spam spam.

Zeldara109 has done the same. Anyone who sees the word "glitch" and instantly turns up their nose should swallow their preconceptions and actually try this hack. I have, and I like it. There is nothing unfair or unreasonable anywhere in it, even though I've had a tough time getting through it (that's no fault of Zeldara's, it's my fault for sucking so bad at video games).

I blame legions of so-called "joke hacks" which were nothing more than intentionally TERRIBLE hacks for the reason people tend to scoff at the idea of them now.

We have a lot to prove with these types of hacks.
Give Zeldara109 a chance. She understands what goes into a quality hack. By the time this is finished, it will be strange, sure, but I guarantee that it'll be high-quality.

I now return you to your regularly-scheduled hack thread.

A joke hack, and I'm all over it already.
Well, certainly not the most entertaining hack ever, but it was kind of funny. At least the first world. Because I can't progress.

Where is the secret in lazy land 4 or whatever?
Also, where is the bad grammar? I don't see bad grammar D:

--------------------
aran - Graces of Heaven
I played it through to what I think is the end, and I love what's been done so far to the hack! A lot of hard work has gone into this to actually replicate glitch effects such as scrambly out of place sprites and lazy level edits that actually look like entirely new levels with the glitches presented. Hex edits helped a lot, too.

I liked how Lemmy was worth 9000 points each stomp, too XD
That cracked me up.
"It's over 9000!"

Muh

Omg, the red switch doesn't work. Fail i guess :P
well, I and Sadistic finished the possible part.

I might put some sort of signature here once. I guess.
