Tip: Take advantage of easy to install Patches in your hack. For example, the Classic Piranha Plant fix should be considered if you are planning to insert that sprite in your hack.
I would say SMW2+2, my second Yoshi's Island hack. Not the most popular hack in the world, but I really like it. I felt I did a better job with level design and difficulty on this one, and I think Mattrizzle's custom level icons added a level of polish to it. I'd say it's the earliest hack of mine I can still go back to and play and think, "Oh, this is cool. I did a good job." rather than wanting to cringe and/or vomit.
Well, my first best hack I made has to be Spiral Quiral. Most of the stuff was done by me (music, level design, porting gfx) but the OW was done by someone else. I think my hack has done quite well.
I kinda feel stupid when I say that The Forgotten Island was my best hack, mainly because it's also the only decent hack I've ever completed (I'm not too fond of 3 Trials...). Funny, but the version with the bug fixes has a much lower rating than the first version, which are exactly the same in content.
I don't have anything to call my best hack yet, but what I do consider to be my future best hack yet (aside from Plumber's Tale 3) is my future Xandra's World project. The planning I'm doing for it makes it seem promising enough. The work and my willpower for it? Well, with this whole summer off from college, and time off from job hunting/potential work, both projects may have this promise fulfilled
I'd say my first best hack was the SMB1-styled hack mainly because I put more effort in that hack than all the other hacks I've worked on altogether. Somewhere deep in SMW hack discussion there should be a hack thread about it.

-------------------- My blog. I could post stuff now and then
Probably Mario in Miscland 2: It was the most polished i ever submitted and ever completed. Yes, it's one level, but the number of levels make it something like 20 levels or more.
my Pokemon Gold hack I started in '07
I actually added Generation 3 pokemon using glitch pokemon as a base
It's quite fun too play
except if you enter the Safari Zone, you can't escape because there are no non-glitchy warp tiles in it, as it is a beta hack. Also I have to make the grass act like water you can walk on as a pokemon only spawns every 255 steps and it crashes the game on impact.
So it's not being released.
Besides that, the original file is on a computer that currently refuses to turn on, and my backup was in a Jump Drive that fell apart because it cracked. (I dropped my laptop on a concrete floor, one of the hinges is smashed and anything n the USB drives is destroyed)
Besides that, my hack Mario's Tiny Adventure.
