Super Mario Odyssey 2.0? (working title)

Link Thread Closed
Hey everyone. It's been a while. Figured I'd try my hand at this whole SMW hacking thing again, what with LM 1.71 finally including the kitchen sink and all.

Velvet Valley 1-1. Ignore the old status bar, I'm still working on its replacement.

More screenshots to come.
I love it! Did you draw everything yourself? Geez, those cake-layer dirt walls look like they took considerable effort. n_n Love the palettes, too.

The brick blocks do look somewhat clashing with the rest of the foreground, though, but that's my only gripe.

Question: what's with the cloud in the foreground? Can you walk on it? ^.^
It's me!!

A nice looking graphics so far. I can't tell much for now since there's only one screenshot. But i'm sure it would be as Epic as Super Mario Odyssey.

Oh wow, BMF54123 is here

Edit:Aww Schwa you just gave me a real, ultimate POWER!!!

Well...the waterfalls are heavily based on those in the prototype version of Bugs Bunny's Birthday Blowout. Do I lose points for that? ;)

I'm not seeing it, myself...they're standard SMB3-style bricks. Is it a palette thing?

Nope, it's just decoration right now. Not really sure what I want to do with them yet. Maybe put them on a separate HDMA scroll plane?

(Fun fact: the bushes and clouds actually use the same tiles. Consider it both a way to save VRAM space and a clever throwback to SMB1.)

Oh my God that IS clever. XDD So then can I ask a second question? ("No, you all only get ONE QUESTION EVER!" *shot*) For this hack, are you aiming for a more classic-style approach on the gameplay (as in, not gimmicky, but more traditional platforming quality)?

My two cents on that is that a classic-style with notable ASM is very possible, yet very hard-pressed to get that beautiful, just-right balance. It would be awesome to see something like that, considering how popular SMO still is, and how many fans you're bound to have supporting your triumphant return (good luck, by the way; I know the pain that comes with being a popular face here, and you have my earnest and brotherly support in such an inevitable endeavor X_x). ^.^

Eww, stop it, I'm not out to steal anyone's thunder. Besides, BMF has been at this even longer than I have. I think he deserves a little more respect than that. :)

He's not saying anything bad, he's referring to the post-detection system that goes off if someone posts while you were making a post.

And BMF, you already know what I think of it from talking in irc. Still is beautiful though.

I can't say much without spoiling the plot, but for this level, I'm going for a straight-up old-school platforming romp. Expect things to get very different after that, though.

Also, this hack is going to require a much more advanced emulator than ZSNES or SNES9X if you want to get the full experience. It will be fully playable in them, you'll just be missing a key element. Can't say much about that yet, either...
I thought you were disappeared forever, but i didn't thought you trashed SM0, since i see a lot of trashed hacks.
I really like those graphics you put on there.

What.

...Oh god I fell of my chair when I saw this thread. It's awesometastic to see you're working on SMO again. Looking forward like hundred of persons.
This is fantastic news that you are continuing the Odyssey, BMF! I gotta admit that it was a hack that I never thought would get finished/continued on but you proved me wrong, and I'm sure many of us too.

The screenshot looks very nice and solid, clean gfx and very nice, vibrant colours. I look forward to seeing more updates! :)

I hate to burst your bubbles, but technically, this isn't the SMO...that died when I lost interest in SMW hacking for a few years and forgot where I left off. A lot of the custom ASM code is unorganized and broken, I misplaced all of my notes, and I have zero interest in going back to fix it all. On top of that, LM 1.71 would probably mangle it pretty badly. (I do plan on salvaging a lot of ideas and some good code from SMO, though, so not all is lost!)

This is basically the spiritual successor to SMO, restarted from scratch, with a new storyline and some clear goals in place. One of those goals is to cut way back on the gimmicky ASM and focus more on the level design and story, so don't expect a flashy tour-de-force of 65c816 wizardry like I was shooting for with SMO. I don't really have the time nor interest to learn about all the crazy technological advances that have been made since I left, anyway. :\
Oh hey, BMF (this is Golden Yoshi, not that you would remember me).

Well, nice to see you working on a SMW hack again, even if it's not the original SMO. I like the look of the screenshot. The FG looks very nice.
@BMF54123: Oh, so you were the creator of Super Mario Odyssey? I played the demo once and it was intriguing and interesting. Sorry to hear you gave up on it and everything in that case. It sure looked like it was running smoothly, but at least I finally know what happened to that project.
Your layout has been removed.
Wow, I never thought I'd hear some news of SMO again. I can't wait to see some more screenshots, but for the one you showed...I really love the graphic style. Just the SMW background doesn't fit, it looks so bland compared to the colourful and cartoony foreground.
Oh my god, I was just talking about how I wish you would continue hacking a few days ago on irc. You are one of my favorite hackers, so I'm glad to see you back in action.

As for the screenshots, those look fantastic! I love how you've drawn(never seen the ground gfx before) and mixed tilesets so effectively here. I look forward to seeing more.
Super Mario Odyssey was the first hack I've ever played, so this is instant awesome news for me. I've heard a lot about you, BMF (also seen your posts on Jul), and I'm very glad that you decided to return to hacking. Yep, Lunar Magic 1.71 has some epic new options, it's really a worth try. The picture looks nice, I'm really interested to see more.
o_O is all I can say.

I honestly thought you were done with SMO (and hacking in general, for that matter) for good. It's quite an awesome surprise to see you working on a hack again. I have to ask though, is that the original SMO you're continuing, or an all-new hack? Wasn't quite clear to me. I bet there's nobody who wouldn't be looking forward to seeing SMO finished, though if it's a completely new hack, that'd be pretty great as well. Strike that, I didn't read your latest post. >_>

As for the screenshot, I like what you've done with the GFX so far. Looks like a perfect mix between the style of Odyssey and the one of "today's hacks". Nice job.

Welcome back, by the way. ;) You probably won't even know who I am, though, since I'm still way too much of a newbie for that. (On that note... It is you, isn't it? Sorry, but experiencing what feels to me like ~5 impostors of famous people, you can't help but doubt surprising appearances a little. >_>)

No. Freaking. Way.

Just the other day I went and played the Super Mario Odyssey demo and then I wondered if you would ever finish it, and I was even wondering why you don't have an account here, and then you make one and post a screenshot for Super Mario Odyssey 2.0. 0_0

Anyway, it looks really fun. I can't wait for a demo/full version.

And maybe you can put up the IPS patch of the original Super Mario Odyssey so far? :3

Totally excited for this. The level you've got right there certainly feels odyssey. Will this follow the general plotline of SMO? Are you going to say? :P

Edit: Just saw the other content too. Totally jazzed!
