Chocolate Level Design 2010 - Discussion

CLDCDiscussion

Well let's see what I can create with my limited knowledge of Lunar Magic & BlockTool. #w{=D}
Wow, the competition sure is getting fierce now. I'm starting to get in doubts of whether I'll win... nah, you all are getting kicked behind me when I win first. </Crude Joke>

In all seriousness, I feel like I suddenly have to try a lot harder than what I've got planned. Good Graphics, sprites, blocks, and a good story don't sound like it is going to make it... man, I hate ASM! I had really got to get to planning.

---

Otherwise, what would people consider an extremely long level. By that, I mean... how many minutes should it take to complete the level? Do note that this does not include explorational details put into the hack/level.
Wow why does everyone need a partner? I deserve bonus points.

Wow, everyone is taking this level contest to be like some short hack contest... oh well.

I know this was posted a few pages back, but if that was said because of my reply, then don't worry! I'm not planning on making my level a mini-hack. I absolutely hate the entries where people try to fit an entire hack into a level.

My goal for this contest is to make a level in which the gameplay and story are balanced just right. So that the story is there, but it doesn't take your mind off of the gameplay or level design at all, and it isn't too long to where it gets boring. I'm usually strongly against putting stories in Mario World hacks, but this idea I have might end up working out perfectly for the contest.

But we'll see in a few months I guess!

yay for putting a whole bunch of effort (aka half an hour) into coding something that won't even be judged

Lol, awesome.
It might not be judged, but it DOES look really impressive and gives me the 'Wow, this will be pretty awesome' feeling before even seeing the actual level.

Presently my levels are done and done. Presently I'm working on GFX. Yes, my entry has more than one level. However, the SECOND level is basically credits with an actual goal post instead of a goal sphere. Although the credits are TECHNICALLY not really credits, but you should see my point. I also planned on making the Nova area (Animated rainbow) in the main level translucent, but I can't figure out how to do that. If you could tell me, you'd be considered epic in my book. :)
Want to see some of my cool swords? Well, too bad, right now you only get to see one of them, and it's my avatar. Might set up some kind of gallery/portfolio at some point, though.
I've got a few questions about this contest that are making me slightly tempted to enter with the first level from world 7 in my hack, so...

1. How well (approximately) would a level work in this contest if it had the automatic running sprite (I have a working copy) in it (as long as the whole design of the level was good, no matter the difficulty of the level), making the level have a twist on the Automatic Mario concept? With this sprite, a few things come into play, for starters, the player cannot slow down, stop moving, or turn around once they are under the "spell" this sprite creates, and running into a wall is deadly (with my version anyway). Fortunately, I found that both teleport blocks and a goal sphere that makes the player stop moving in a horizontal level can be used in conjunction with the automatic running sprite.

2. In order to submit a level to this contest, does it have to be on a rom where the only modified level is the one in question that the author wants to submit, or can it be on a modified version of the rom it's currently on, as long as only that particular level is accessible on the OV map?

3. Are dynamic sprites allowed in this contest?

Anyway, thanks in advance.
Hey guys limepie's entry is amazing you should all play it now it totally doesn't look like poop and has no exit.

If you could release that after the Choco contest, I would really appreciate using that in the Crater for Hunter's floating Capitallarium.

If it has enough playable contest, and it's a cool/creative idea, it'll probably do good if you execute it well. I can't really say "oh yeah this will work" - I'd have to see it in action.

Doesn't matter. As long as it is obvious which level is meant to be judged, I don't care if you submit a completed hack (though I encourage people NOT to submit levels from their hack - make something unique for this).

Yes. Everything you can think of is allowed in this contest (with perhaps the exception of MSU1, but I doubt anyone will use that anyway).
I was actually going to use MSU-1 for this...

I'm working on a hack! Check it out here. Progress: 64/95 levels.
you don't finished the level GoldenSonic? Where did you stop?

Okay, thanks SNN.

One more thing, I know of some flaws with using the automatic running sprite, that has to do with power-ups (they are near-impossible to collect while running continuously to the right, unless they are placed in plain sight). But hopefully the flaws won't make this level invalid for the contest, right?

Being that this level is an endurance type of level, is it okay to make the player unable to become Fiery or Caped, just for that level?

I posted a few screenshots of this level earlier, but I'm curious, is posting screenshots of the level you want to submit not a good idea (e.g. spoiling things too early?)?

I should have something witty to put here (even if it's just to update dated info), shouldn't I?

Posting screens/videos of what your entry is going to be isn't a good idea because other people can draw ideas/inspiration from what you're doing and make it better. Even something that is difficult to pull off ASM-wise can have some cues drawn from it to get some use out of for other entries.

If you absolutely must post screens/vids of your entry, do it when the deadline has almost here. Anyone that then tries to draw something from your work will put themselves at a gamble at whether to shoehorn said-idea into their entry haphazardly or it's implemented OK, but leaves a lot of room for improvement.

Oh, well, I can ensure I'm not sharing the automatic running sprite, I modified the automatic walk sprite to get the effect I wanted for the automatic running sprite, and besides that, I think the automatic running sprite used to be in the Sprites section on here, before being deleted for being an edit of the automatic walk sprite, isn't that right?
