This happened a few days ago, but I didn't have much time to open a thread, and actually, it didn't really come to my mind. Anyways

Four people, including two children, were killed after a reservoir broke and flooded three villages in western Hungary with toxic red mud, officials said Tuesday.

The government has declared a state of emergency in three counties, the State Secretariat of Governmental Communications said.

The National Catastrophe Protection Directorate (OKF) said the two children who died were 1 and 3 years old. A 35-year-old man was killed in his car, and a woman was killed in her home, the government said.

Rescue workers are looking for seven people who are missing. They have treated at least 116 casualties, including eight people who were seriously injured. Most have been airlifted by helicopter to hospitals in the capital, Budapest.

The reservoir burst in the town of Kolontar on Monday afternoon, the government said Tuesday.

At least a million cubic meters of red mud have spilled so far, the government said, affecting the villages of Kolontar, Devecser and Somlovasarhely.

The toxic sludge -- a waste product from aluminum production -- could potentially endanger two major rivers, the Danube and the Raba, the government said. It has already reached the river Marcal.

The Environment and Water Management Center has experts working on preventing the sludge from affecting the Danube and Raba, it said.

This is simply terrible. So many houses, valuables, animals and living organisms lost and gone...I'm so sorry for these poor people who have to leave there everything and languish at an assembly point...and to clear it up: this was mainly a human catastrophe, there are faulty people who need to pay somehow for this. The worst thing is that the flood is highly toxic, therefore this area will be unlivable and dead for many-many years.
Fortunately I live somewhat far from the catastrophe, so it totally doesn't affect my environment, but it's obvious that we'll send money and other useful stuff (like clothes, food etc.) for the victims of this terrible catastrophe.
(Funny, earlier today I wondered why this thread hadn't been made yet.)

Yes, I've heard of this, and I've also heard that another dam filled with this mud has a high risk of breaking.
It sure does look like some venomous shit to touch. I feel sorry for the people who have to leave their possessions, but even moreso for the (wasn't it 7 people?) the people who were killed, and their families.

The place where it happened is actually just like ~40 km. north of the north side of the Balaton Lake, where I've spent my summer holidays in 2003 and 2004. I'm kind of glad it didn't reach out that far.

Oh yes, you're right, that article I copied was the first on cnn.com, I copied this one because this summed up the happenings the best. Since Tuesday they found another 3 dead victims, and they're still searching searching 1 lost man right now.

Yeah, I've heard that too, and I'm kind of aware, what will happen, since that another dam is ~40-50 km far from us...that's far enough, but still...
Yeah, I saw this on youtube, but the videos showed a lot less toxic mud than the pictures here, which show the damage to be more greater and serious.

I love how you say this without actually knowing what the cause of the reservoir burst was. Perhaps nobody could have known, I just see it as conditioning by the media to have people try to blame it on one person or another, it gets more attention that way. Of course, I do agree that if there *is* a person or people at fault, then they would obviously need to face consequences of some sort.

Yeah, you're right, I was maybe a bit too harsh, but I (and actually most likely everyone) still think that it wasn't only a natural catastrophe. Of course, everyone is searching the cause of this, since it was so unexpected... but again, it's really, really likely that the dam owner company is the most faulty here (and the heavy raining in the past few days).
Oh wow, that entire place got desolated. I wonder how people will recover from that. D:

Also, where can I find a picture of the reservoir before it burst? I'm curious of how it looked like.

My blog. I could post stuff now and then
Poor people, they've got everything gone afer that. Fortunately a very low number of people died.

Now I need to change my old avatar. Or not.
I saw this on the news a few days ago, this looks pretty serious. I feel sorry for the people affected by this disaster. Hopefully no-one else will get hurt by this.
