Might be a good idea to decide whether or not to use it fairly early on.

Nothing special except what you can imagine in Mario's Drug Trip 3
test video

Kaizo Hacking has reached a new level!
i made this for kldc and scrapped it because the yellow koopa stuff isn't entirely "savestateless friendly" (they like to do their own thing a lot of the time.

But idk it was a lot of fun to go back and play through this again so i might try to salvage parts of it and try my luck at finishing it. or not. either way i want to show it off becAUSE im vain #w{=)}
umm... can i help you!?
Hey, I still kinda remember this draft and I thought it would have a lot of potential due to the design. Do the colored coins have a purpose or are they there just for decoration?
you scroll the screen right at green coins and scroll it to the left at blue coins.

It was in the description of the video.

Oh yeah. Oops.
Pretty creative level hobz. I remember attempting to play it tho and it was pretty dang hard. Also I kinda forgot this thread existed :D

Everything is looking pretty good so far as expected. I'll be waiting for more from this.

Also, weren't you pretty much done with kaizo hacking? Not like I want you to be done, just wondering is all

To be fair, I still maintain that I'm done making hacks where I'm encouraged to spam slow-down (or where it kinda gets 'anything goes' later on), and I think it would be significantly more tolerable to put myself in the mindset of 'what if I were to act like this was originally meant to be done savestateless' like with Hertz Donut (I remember how much I loved working on that hack and I still think it kinda seems like Magnum Opus dissonance). It seems as tho I never fail to fall into the trap of underestimating my creativity moods, and maybe that could be useful outside the realm of hacking.

Also, I once had a dream about working on a sequel to Hertz Donut.

IDK, I guess I just can't shake the feeling of enjoying the general style of 'creativity without the bounds of fairness and the nails difficulty just happens to feel secondary'.

Lookin' slick

(Would it be possible to jump from the first bat straight to the grey platform instead of landing on the ledge below? I'm sure you can also pull that off at the end of the room. idk)

Turns out yes - it was possible to cheese both. Gotta fix that.

Hey all, smw noob here, looking for feedback for my first *almost* complete level of my unnamed kaizo hack.

In this level, the input for down is always activated, so you'll always be ducking or sliding.

My main concern is a) I think the second part might be too bland due to the lack of sprites, but I'm not sure what to add, and b) I'm not sure how to wrap it up (but I guess I'll figure that bit out sooner or later!)

Another question: How important are custom graphics and music? I have no problem learning how to inject them into my hack, but I was wondering if most "vanilla" kaizo hacks get buried unless they have a lot of custom stuff incoporated.

Anyway, lemme know what you think please. I appreciate any and all feedback! Thanks!
First off, welcome!
Custom graphics and music are optional actually. If you want the hack to look polished and without the old and boring but nostalgic SMW music, it's your choice, but it's not really mandatory. It's normal for them to get buried as new content appears, vanilla or not.

Your level really does look kinda bland, especially if you're in a ducking/sliding position and there's very few stuff to slide on. Probably make it so you kill an enemy while sliding, maybe even a moving platform beforehand. Make sure to fix the cutoff the lava creates in contact with the ledges. And lastly, how possible is the muncher pit at the end of the second room?

Thanks for the warm welcome! ❤️

Yeah, looking back at it I can see what you mean. I'll go through again and see what I can do.

>how possible is the muncher pit

The munchers are honestly for show (not sure if that's something I should avoid or not). Getting through the muncher pit is a given if you start holding left after you make it over the top of the slope; otherwise you get crushed.

(That being said, getting over the top of the slope is the hard part.)

Felt like editing in Lunar Magic again. I wanted to make something that doesn't feel way too unfair for the first level of a kaizo: light hack, but has a couple original ideas in it. You can see some inspiration by PangaeaPanga's levels and Akihabara in the beginning. That's what I could do only with vanilla resources. What do y'all think of this?

^Beautiful palettes.

So for some reason I kinda felt like trying my hand at a purely vanilla (in terms of design itself) level since I don't always feel like inserting and/or trying out uses for custom sprites and stuff.

As the name suggests, it's cramped in here.

This set-up is not completely set in stone, but I kinda like the beginning part.

Pretty good usage of cramped corridors, never seen anyone exploit it that way.
Is it going to be a single level or another hack composed of multiple levels? And I assume you're also gonna keep the spiny's apparently "glitched" graphic?
