The E10+ rating.

(Disclaimer: Pretty much only Americans will know what I'm talking about here.)

The E10+ rating has always seemed unnecessary to me. It just came out of nowhere (well, not exactly nowhere - there was some discussion beforehand and it definitely wasn't made on a whim) in 2005 with the advent of Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, and has haunted American and Canadian players ever since. I guess the ESRB's reasoning was that beforehand there was no way to know whether an E game was perfectly kid-friendly or almost a T, and that they needed an in-between rating. OK, fair enough. What I disagree with, however, is how arbitrary the distinction between the two is.

E10+ is still, essentially, a kids' rating, but ever since its invention, it has become apparent that it's the ESRB's "pet" rating. Apparently, the mere use of semi-realistic weapons or people or animals crying out when they're hurt is enough to rate a game E10+. Apparently, loud noises are enough to rate a game E10+. Some of you have seen the topic I made before about how I thought the ESRB's rating choice for Pokemon Rumble was... not fully thought through. I'm somewhat more understanding of the rating nowadays, but I have never forgiven them for that horrible decision and it's unlikely that I ever will.

It's not the rating itself I hate, it's the fact that the simplest things can push the ESRB's buttons. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm assuming other countries don't have this kind of problems.

Yes, you could say I like Osaka.
I rather despise rating systems in general. I think they should be done away with and instead we should rely solely on content warnings. If people wanna censor themselves based on the content of something that's fine, but they should at least know what content is in it rather than judge by an arbitrary letter or number on the box.
My god, people are still complaining about the E10 Rating? It's been five years!

That doesn't mean something is not flawed, or that we're just supposed to get used to it. I still hate the "new" Youtube channel and video layout. βl

Goddamnit just because they're not as good as the old ones doesn't automatically make them "suck". They're not THAT bad!

... Before the thread gets derailed even more by whiny jerks, I should probably say that I've never really had a problem with the E10 rating, to be honest.

True, but they never even asked the userbase whether or not they wanted to change, and that sort of caused my hate towards it. Whiny jerks, eh? Meh.

The E10+ rating... Well, I never knew there was any real hatred towards it at all. It sort of made me laugh at first, but I don't hate it just because it's somewhat ridiculous.

What's really stupid is there's a 17+ rating and then a 18+ rating.

Nobody ever wants their games to have an Ao rating though, so there may as well not be such a rating for all intents and purposes.

Although that does sort of underlines the already blatant absurdity with the rating.

You really gotta look at this from the ESRB's point of view. They need to cover their butts, it's hardly their fault that idiotic parent looking to make a quick buck tries to sue them for a "badly rated" game. I blame the rest of America, not the ESRB.
I checked the ESRB website to check Kinect Sports' content descriptor; it was rated E10+ for Mild Cartoon Violence. The website's description elaborated that it was due to loud noises and a general chaotic atmosphere in the boxing minigame. In other words, the exact same reasons and content descriptor as Pokemon Rumble.

Granted, they most likely think said loud noises and chaotic atmosphere may be too intense for younger kids, but it apparently never occured to them that children who are intimidated by loud noises of all things are beaten up for their lunch money by the kids who are beaten up for their lunch money. And even then, couldn't they just not play that minigame?
