Yoshi's Adventure - Shadows From Subterranea (Kabu Caverns!)

Gotta say this hack looks graphically impressive, level design looks cool aswell. Keep it up!
I like your title screen, and the silhoutte of (I know who, but I won't say) looks pretty accurate to her to me! I can't wait till the plot kicks in!

Lol, Scorpion knew who it was as well! I modified a picture of that person (won't say who it is) using photoshop to make the BG transparent, to darken the pic fully, and modified the position a bit. Then it was put through the ultimate BG Ripper to get the layout and graphics. It's on Layer 1 with Yoshi, the title Text, and the portal.
Also, The initial story is on the C3 thread, and I don't have any cutscenes yet, though my teammate is helping me write them (and writes most of the story based stuff.)
Now to find out how to make a Vanilla or RPGhacker VWF cutscene warp to the starting map after the end of the cutscene (for the beginning of the game). The first cutscene after that is in the world 1 castle.

Thank you! I'll keep it up! Be sure to check back for updates! I'm getting much better with YY-CHR so it's getting easier to make things into ExGFX files.
Well, another double post but it's time for an update! #w{=)}

Here's some screens of the first level of world 2. I wanted to try this graphical combo instead of the standard Green Hill Zone BG/FG. This level has a top path and bottom path, kinda like the elevated paths in the 2D Sonic games.
The Music that's used here is: Sonic the Hedgehog 4 - Splash Hill Zone act 1

Buzz Bomber Graphical replacement for the SD3 Needlebird sprite.

Also, cool additions for this world are Sonic Midway posts and goalposts! A huge thanks to Sonikku for the sprites!

Looks like Robotnik's still got that same headshot xD

Finally, we have a few screens of the first section of the second world 2 level. I'm going for a Quartz Quadrant-esque feel here. The first half is in the lush outdoors, the second half in the crystal mines.

Plus, a couple of new graphical replacements (and the enemies using them) making their first appearences here!

Wiggler > Catakiller (Sonic 1 Marble Zone Badnik)

Giant Snift > Scorpion BETA (Sonic CD Quartz Quadrant Zone badnik)

Nice to see more progress. Well, time for me to post some constructive criticism.

You're graphics style has inproved ten-fold, are you basing your work from that ExGFX file I renewed for you?
FIRST 3 SCREENSHOTS

I can tell you're putting a lot of work into this. First one looks kinda bland though. Maybe you're trying to show off Background? The other two, look real nice. I really like the bee in the third screenshot. You know more about machines than I do when drawing one.
NEXT 4 SCREENSHOTS

Same things as I see it, good work; however, one thing that bothers me is the corner tiles on the first one of this batch. It looks like cutoff to me. Try darkening out the bright, so that it fades into the dirt.
NEXT 3 SCREENSHOTS

I'm pressuming the same level, so yeah. The midway point lacks an outline; and that is really strange considering everything else has one.
LAST SCREENSHOTS

Different graphics, looks like Yoshi's Island to me in some sort of way. This is really coming along nicely. On the second screeny, that grey 16x8 platform looks cutoff to me. Try removing the black all around it (only leaving an outline) or make a version of the tile where the top is flat, but the bottom is round.
I can't seem to get a clear look of the Beta Scorpion.

Usually I base the graphics on the world's theme. I plan on using the tileset you fixed up in the final world (Subterranea) so most of the graphics will be in a similar style, but that was a good question there!
The Spikes in the first set of screenshots I drew myself, and they kinda do have D4-ish shading xD

It was to kinda show the BG, though I'll put a couple of decorations there to fix it up. Also, I didn't have to draw the Buzzbomber sprite, actually xD One of it's frames from Sonic 1 fit in the 32x32 space the graphics use, which made it a lot easier. I did have to fix up the shading a bit. For the other badnik graphics, I usually work with the original sprite a bit or draw it with using the original sprite as a reference.

This tileset didn't originally come with corner tiles so I decded to draw them myself. I'll add some fade to the top/bottom sides of the corner tiles to fix them up.

When Sonniku sent me the sprites he couldn't find the ExGFX to go with them, so I worked with a sprite of the original Sonic 1 midpost to fit it into the GFX space. I think it kinda looks strange as well, so I'll fix that one up too.

I'm going for a very Nature/lush feel in the first area, so I used some YI plant Decor from some of it's tilesets along with decor from a few others. I really like how much they add to the feel. As for the gray platform, I'll make a new version of the tile to remove the cutoff. As for the Beta Scorpion, the screen was taken when it was on a frame where it's claw was in front of it's face, and I'll fix the outline on it.
Also, for reference, here;s the Original Sprite from Sonic CD:

Anyway, thank you for the constructive criticism! I'll be sure to use it well and I'm glad you're liking these updates!
Woah, that Sonic-esque level feels very Sonic-y, really nice job pulling that off. Especially screenshot 4, that looks very Sonic-y. Ha, it's cool you're also using the streetlamp thing for a midway point, and it's cool that you're using the little sign at the end of levels(does it spin?), you should replace the goal music with Sonic goal music. The Sonic CD-style level looks pretty good, too. Definitely make a carnival/casino style level, those are the best kind of Sonic level(imo).

Ah, memories.
Your layout has been removed.
Thank you! I'm glad I'm able to capture the Sonic feel for these levels. Like I said earlier, Sonikku gave me the sprites and I'm glad I get to use them for this. The End post, since it's a sprite, does indeed spin. Also, I would put different ending themes for different worlds but I tried the same thing with a patch for Star music and I can only use MISC music so there wouldn't be enough room.
Also, Don't worry, there's definitely going to be a Casino/Pinball themed level, it's one of my favorite kinds of Sonic levels!
This is still looking pretty good! I really like The graphics your using for this specific level. It goes over good with the other graphics your using for the sprites and coins.
It's weird you have inclusive pronouns, but still only have the binary options for gender. Where is Non-Binary, Agender, etc? Not a gripe. Just curious lmao.

I really wanted to go for that Genesis Sonic feel. The Sprite graphics I'll fix up a bit but the feel flows well. I'm glad you really like this hack! Once I get a demo ready, I'll put you on the beta testers list if you still want to.

Speaking of graphics, not much of an update but here's the BG I ripped for this level. It's the underground area of the original Quartz Quadrant from Sonic CD. The crystals are Palette ExAnimated to get the pink glow of the crystals of the original.

That looks cool!

can I beta test?

Of course! Though, it'll still take some time before a demo is ready but I'll gladly let you beta test.

*A Very cool Sonic CD Rip*

WHERE IS MY DICTONARY? I WANT AN NEW WORD FOR THIS!!
This is really cool! Also, you will use a Parallax Effect for this?

Yeah I still want to!! Even though I don't post that often in the W.I.P. section of the site I still keep checking this thread out because this hack looks very promising.

I definitely will once I learn how to modify the HDMA effect to fit it.

Awesome! I'll add you to the list once it's almost ready.

Anyway, time for a small yet nice update.

Recently I learned how to make Layer 3 BGs so I added one to the second world 2 level like I was planning. I also added some HDMA since I was working in LevelASM.

The Layer 3 BG, the mountains seem to tie things together since the BG felt a bit empty behind the trees.

A small new area for the level since having the two paths so close to each other made the level feel a bit crowded.

New HDMA for Oceanside Stronghold for an Early Morning-ish effect.

HDMA for the water area shwon on the thread's first post. The BG has a wavy effect though it's hard to tell from the screenshot. I'll probably replace the ocean gradient with a backdrop gradient once I figure out how to fix something with the latter.

Also, a screenshot from the second area of the Quartz Quadrant style level. I ripped the FG crystals from the game. This area hasn't been finished yet as the screenshot kinda shows.

I love the Quartz Quadrant style level,a nd the hdma in the 5th image was excellent. Not to mention the hdma in Oceanside Stronghold- good job!
It's all looking pretty good, and it's going to turn into a great hack judging from the screenshots. The overall feel in those levels are just great. The palettes, design, Graphic choices, everything is just perfect.

Ohhhh :3
I love Yoshi hacks and this one looks so amazing!
I'll play it as soon as there's the full version avaible.

The Pictures look great ^^
I'm looking forward to this. : )
I'm glad you all like the HDMA and the level design, I'm very happy with how there are turning out!

Anyway, speaking of that Quartz Quadrant-style level, today I uploaded a video of it!

<object width="440" height="345"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/8kIKFVdJHhY?fs=1&hl=en_US&color1=0x5d1719&color2=0xcd311b"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/8kIKFVdJHhY?fs=1&hl=en_US&color1=0x5d1719&color2=0xcd311b" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="440" height="345"></embed></object>
Well, a double post update but an update nonetheless. Ripped some Casino Night Zone graphics from Sonic the Hedgehog 2, for the level you get to if you cleared the secret exit in the level in the previously shown video (the Quartz Quadrant-based level; secret exit not shown). I decided on a mix between the Beta and Final version graphics for some nice variety, and a special thanks to Imamelia for the multi-direction bounce blocks so I could make those bumpers! Palette ExAnimation was a very useful thing here as it brought a more lively feel to the level, and to increase the feel it already has. This level is going to turn out well! (Though, the Layout shown in the video isn't part of the level, the layout was just shown to show all the different tiles). The BG was ripped using edit's tool; the graphics for the Beta BG I think are already in the graphics section, though since I was combining 2 BGs together, I used sprite sheets to get the graphics instead, then put it through the BG ripper.

On a side note, I've applied RPGHacker's VWF patch to use for message boxes and dialogues. This'll be great for cutscenes when they're started. The frame graphics are from Yoshi's Island.

I used SNES9x to record this so that's why the video quality isn't as clear as it could've been, but I don' know how to dump SMV or ZSNES movies to video files, so I use the Record AVI function.
