Yoshi's Adventure - Shadows From Subterranea (Kabu Caverns!)

Anywho, this hack is really coming along nicely, however, I think the Cube Wisp graphics could be a bit better, I don't know, just doesn't seem right to me.

The only hard part was fitting in the eyes but it isn't really much of a problem. Though, I'll see what I can do with it.

Thank you!
Also, the GFX are in GFX28 and GFX29, and have it set to "2BPP GB" and have the Palette set to "PAL" not "PALSET".
@Volke - The hack is good, thats all I have to say...

@Karatekid - Cube Wisp is looking good, eyes look strange...
...Why there are Sonic Graphics in a hack staring Yoshi is beyond me.
You would have to know how much I hate Sonic to know how much of a compliment this is: This hack looks simply amazing!
Eh, sure. Why not? Kaizo hacking doesn't seem too ha-aaaaaaand I broke the ROM.
This is a really cool hack! The levels look well designed, the graphics are awesome, and I'm sure it'll be fun to play. The only thing I don't like is the fact that your using my "Yoshi" name in the status bar. Honestly, that thing is so ugly I'm surprised I submitted it. Here, take a better one:

World 2 is Sonic's world (the location here is South Island), and Yoshi is here for storyline reasons (which will be progressively revealed as you play through the hack). Also, even though you dislike Sonic, I'm glad you really like the hack anyway! If you want to see some of World 1's content, it's on the thread's first page (also, there's a link to the C3 thread, which had more of World 1 than was posted here).

Yep, I'm thinking the same thing, I'll see what I can do with the eyes. They just seem a bit skinny so I'll see if I have some room to make them wider.

Thank you! I'm glad people are liking the level design, along with the graphics etc. Especially for this one since I had to rip most of the graphics for this level (Casino Night) myself from spritesheets. Also, regarding the Status Bar name, The new one you posted is great, but I'll probably stick with the current one. I don't think it looks bad at all, in fact, you did a great job keeping it in the SMW status bar name style. Still, that new one looks good as well, so that one you should also submit.

Well, that answers why the style changes. I figured it would be a special or bonus world thing, but since there is actual storyline reasons, i'm guessing Sonic is somehow involved? Right?

P.S. Ok, maybe I don't HATE Sonic, i'm just not crazy about him, and thats just the new games, i'm actually sort of fond of the older Sonic games, where being good required more than holding down the right button.

Somewhat, also there are a few other worlds Yoshi visits as well.
Well, most of this world is based on the older games, so here you won't be dissapointed. Everyone has their opinions, and besides Sonic Colors, there won't be any references to the newer games.

Yeah, sorry if I offended anybody, but lets face it, I personaly know big time Sonic fans who dislike most of the newer games *cough*Sonic 2006*cough*...

Besides the fact some Sonic fans thought Sonic was "revived" in Sonic Colors, but the game was difficult...I liked it though..

Anyways, I think the cube wisp is Ok...

Even though the game is a ripoff of Super Mario Galaxy xD

Anyways, the cube wisp is a unique idea for your hack, although it does look a bit strange. I wouldn't change it though; at least it makes sense.

...it is? I've never even heard of Sonic Colors...

...but lets get back on topic, I can't wait to see what you do with this hack next!

Well, I got the cube wisp's eyes rounder to fit the look better, so I'll show that soon.
Also, a little preview of what the next level will be like. If you take the normal exit in the Quartz Quadrant style level, you get brought here instead of the Casino. This is a sort of hill/mountainous/grassland area. It's a road to the ruins, which is the level after this one (or the Casino if you went there instead). You'll start to see more and more ruins as you get farther into the level.
Also, a couple of screens showing the graphics, along with a new graphical replacement:

DKC Zinger > Bubbles (Sonic 3 Marble Garden Zone badnik)

I like your layout's background.
Your hack has a great graphical approach, and everything seems to be right in place... except for a few things. I've only seen minor, really minor, graphical issues, they won't affect the gameplay, of course, so you can skip them. They're also from quite a while back, so I don't know if you have already fixed them.

As you can see in here, there's a cutoff right where the pillar(?) and the ridge come together, and

there's also a floating cap of a pipe in here!
And there's something that felt out of place in the quadrant level. In the video you posted, at page 2 of this thread, right at the time mark of 1:27, I thought that you were able to stand on those wooden logs(?), so I suggest that you tone down the palette a bit, so that it doesn't blend with the foreground.
Besides all that, I like your level design, since it's not linear at all, and it even requires some backtracking to get through it. Nice job.

Thank you very much! Also, I'll definitely fix that pillar cutoff. I'll put a more square block at the bottom of the pillar to fix it.

That isn't part of an actual level, that was just a screenshot to display some of the enemy graphical replacements for world 2 xD

I'll probably brighten the palette the logs a bit more. The darker logs are solid and the lighter logs aren't and are just for decoration.

Thank you very much! I don't want my levels to be too short or linear, so I try different ways to make them nonlinear and more interesting/fun to play. Also, if you have to run around tom grab items, I make sure that it's fun and adds to the gameplay instead of becoming too tedious. Either way, I'm glad you enjoyed the levels, and I'll be sure to have more soon!
usually dark ones are decorations...

EDIT: Very nice how you did the enemies there ;).

Sometimes, it really just depends on what the author chooses.

Thank you! Also, if you want to see more, they're on pages 1 and 2.

Also, time for an update! My first custom boss! I made this with the Ultimate "n00b" Boss Sprite, though, it works well. It's based off of the Fire Breath boss from Sonic 3 and Knuckles, where it was the Angel Island Zone Midboss. This is the Miniboss for the level following Nature's Lush Quadrant (if the normal exit is taken).

...wow, thats looking pretty neat so far! So good that I think I need to learn the n00b boss. Glad to see you're making progress, and I hope the rest of your hack turns out well!

The boss from Sonic 3? Sweeeet...
Indeed, the boss is from Sonic 3! Here's a video of the original boss (skip to 6:49; using a Knuckles playthrough because the missile/rocket attack he'll only do in battle if you're playing as Knuckles).

Thank you! The "n00b" boss seemed hard to make something more complex out of at first, but I got the hang of it pretty quickly, and I'm sure you will too. Making good move combos and patterns is a key. Plus, if you know the code well enough, you can try pasting in 32x32 routines from other sprites into this one for more variety.
Though, I hope that the boss sprite can be made 48x48 in some way, and that you can have multiple attacks per phase (like timed attacks, meaning certain patterns activated after a time interval, instead of just one continuous attack pattern). Either way, you should be able to learn it quickly.
Looks like another double post.

Screens of "Road to the Ruins"!

This level starts mostly linear as you're "On a road to the ruins" xD
You start to see more stonework and ruined buildings as the level progresses.

However, when we reach the ruins, we see that part of it has caved and blocked the entrance. These will shatter when touched, but only when a P-switch is active, but where to get one? Jump down the hole in the previous screen with the two purple orbs on pillars.

After jumping into the shaft, you end up here! After finding a p-switch, a pipe brings you back to the area you entered from above ground.

Comments are appreciated!
