WIP HACK : Mario in Mainland

Oh no. Another hack. Especially by a person who no one knows.

Well, uh, this hack is mainly vanilla, that usually uses no FG ExGFX. I like to edit through Map16 and use custom palettes (I haven't done so yet) blah blah.

(Usually I only add FG ExGFX if I find something that I can edit like the original tiles, but that's a rare find.)

I call it "Mario Through Mainland". Bowser (of course, who else?) steals seven Mystical Eggs and hid them on an unknown continent on the Mushroom world, Mainland.

I plan on this being a full hack. I have a lot of ideas, especially for the biggest world, Mainland's Capital (the city). It'll have custom sprites, GFX (for anything else than the FG, usually), sprites, blocks, music, and the whole chibang of whatnots.

World 1 (Kilokey Island) is currently done right now. Don't expect much out of it, I wanted it to be mainly Map16 really, as I like introducing things the further you progress, and ExGFX is one of them.

Updated the hack a bit. I worked on the blue palette myself, but I forgot who made the first one.



The second level is completely finished, after working on it for two days yet being fairly short. The third level is coming along nicely. :3

And the title was changed from 'through' to 'in'. I don't like long titles.

First of the pallets are awesome second i dont mind that you dont use alot of ExGfx but it would fit in more with some levles more better
Third this is me just complaining like a baby but i am getting a little tired of swm mario id mix it up go to graphics and find player graphics.
Fourth, Question did you use any patches? i dont see any visiual ones but i could be wrong hack look good though

What? Please use proper grammar and punctuation.

First, there's only three levels finished. I won't use ExGFX until the second world for more of a brand new graphics introduction for players. Second, the SMW Mario is staying, I hate all of the edits to Mario, they all look awful.

And if you're talking about patches, like xkas, then yes: the Classic Piranha Plant fix.

Very nice! I always love seeing quality Vanilla hacks, and some ExGFX backgrounds never hurt anyone, either. I'll be keeping an eye on this one.

"Quality?" Wow, I'm flattered. :3

I usually don't get much done on weekdays because of school and such, so don't expect much until Saturday/Sunday.

Well, once I get world 1 done you'll see way more unique stuff, especially World 6, Mainland Capital.

Thanks, heh. And sorry about that, but there's WAY more enemies than you think, thanks to the FastROM patch. I usually kill most of the enemies then take a screenshot.

I haven't gotten much done today, rather than polishing the level one palette.

Well I guess I can disclose something. I wanted this hack to be different from most others, and taking on the original style SMW intended to, but loosely. I've played some hacks and only got only so far, not because they're too hard, or because I can't play, just how unpolished and un-fluent the hack is, that includes the top-rated/featured hacks.

I also wanted the content to be different. As I said, I like to introduce more and more along progression, and I at least three unique worlds for this hack: Mainland Capital (City; world 6), Havoc Volcano (Lava/Cave; world 4), and Spaced Out (Space; world 7). Those three worlds have my best interest in, especially Mainland Capital and Spaced Out, involving such things as building a statue to progress in one level, or using gravity to go further distances.

Of course, include a good storyline rather than the usual 'Bowser kidnaps <insert peach or object(s) here>. The more you progress, the more of a story you uncover, like why the Deserted Decedents worship the Havoc Volcano, yet the Cold Commoners wish to fight it with their ice.

Those are my brief plans, but until then, I want to create a really good hack, that is in the Vanilla style with custom ExGFX to custom bosses, and everything inbetween.

I may not have shown off what I intended to, but I'll hope this hack will get recognition sooner or later. ;3

Level 3 is complete! Only thing I've done since the screenshots is add a better BG and add a tile of the Piranha Plant pipes (after Midway Point.)



Shy Guys are useful in this level. The Blue ones are invincible so far in the game (no stars/capes yet) so yeah, have fun.

Well that looks nice! But I don't realy like the pallete of the blue shyguy... Then the OW; there is a big perspecitve error in it. And you could realy use some more decorations. But the levels want to make me play this! Good luck bro!!!
I don't really like the blue shyguy palette, and the grey spots on the ground really should be changed, they don't look right.
As said above, the blue shy guy should be fixed. The land palette should be redone too.

Also the backround palette could use a custom palette.

Done! Fixed the perpesctive error. Added a Mushroom House in place of Yoshi's House (btw test level spoils testers/me with 3UP Moons and powerups =P). Polished the level even more. Gradient BG for a sunset-styled level. Darkened the palette.

Onto Kilokey Lake (secret level)!

Nope, try again in the OW, you missed a line. Also, the ground palette needs to be changed. It doesn't look that good with gray dots all over it.

You're just missing some lines:
Place lines where I circled and it will look alot better. As for the palette, well, NO.don't just darken it... pink ground with green spots won't look good either, just change them to fit in with the dirt palette.

It looks okay now, but you don't have to make it the exact same color, just see what colors really fit in.

Oh and here is the pallete for Kilokey Lake. It's actually just a water level, but you enter the level on land for a half a minute.
