Admittedly, that's a bit of an excessive name for a hack like this, but moving on...

You may remember a long time ago a hack by the name of "Super Mario Planet" lurking on this site. It wasn't very good, but this is the end result after years of slowly tweaking and polishing it. As far as custom content, it features graphics drawn almost entirely by myself (There's some Icegoom, and ExGfx for text) as well as custom blocks (I'd like to add custom music eventually).

The story is as such: there's a enigmatic series of books collectively called "Aether" that has managed to hold all of the information humanity has ever collected. The books were kept hidden away, as they were too useful to destroy, but too risky to lose. After many, many years, the books were forgotten about to all but a few, still locked away in some anonymous corner of the world.
However, they were rediscovered in an underground vault one day, whereupon they were stolen by Bowser. He stumbled upon how to get the books to do operate, but couldn't read the ancient lexical symbols that formed when asked for strategies (legible at one point in time, natch). Frustrated, he took the books and spread them far and wide across the world until he could learn how to translate them.
And then Mario comes and saves the day by breaking into the books' strongholds and taking them away... I haven't really developed that part of the story yet.

(Tl;dr Magical MacGuffins are lost, then found, then stolen, and you have to get them all back.)

EDIT: I can't believe I completely forgot to post the download link in the first post!

Now for screen shots!

The first world, Balmy Bay

Clammy Cove. I've worked on the water effects for a while, but it's still imperfect.

Wily Woods. I'm actually a little surprised how somewhat random color splatters on a tree can look.

Ruin Run. Showing off the water, as well as... well, you'll find out.

The castle, Madness Mirrors. Touching the eponymous mirrors will send you to the beginning of the level!
----------------------------------------------------------------------

The second world, Briar Boscage. It doesn't sound very comforting, I'll say that much.

Mushpole Marsh. From hereon out, those things are called "Mushpoles."

Razor Road. Admittedly, the bramble's graphics were entirely on accident; they were meant to look like destroyed blocks.

Vertigo Village. Here, the Donkey Kong Country inspiration is very notable.

The castle, Painful Palace. You can't see this, but the briars are scrolling up and down. Painful, indeed.

There are a total of three worlds; to unlock the third one, you must find the secret exit in certain levels to make a pathway to a switch palace (which are very difficult to both find and beat) in the first two worlds. I would rather keep those palaces and the last world secretive, so no screen shots unless everyone really wants to see them.

So far, I have the first two worlds at least 95%-ish complete, but I am currently putting most of my effort into the last one. Anything you can say about the hack so far, even if it's just about the alliterative names? Also, if anyone is willing to test the hack, just send me a PM.

EDIT: If you support this hack, then it would be greatly appreciated to put this userbar in your signature, bio, or on your person!

Just in case you somehow missed it the first time!

Looks good to me!
I like the GFX style and the OW GFX are cool.
Two words: WOW and Epic!!! I #w{<3} it! But the big trees linda clash in with everything else. You could change them.

That is all. Keep on scrolling
All I can say is... the overworld graphics really are amazing. No really, they remind me of VIP 5 and Brutal Mario's recent overworlds, and to have that level of detail for the overworld of what's your first, maybe second hack is outright incredible. So yeah, overworld wise, you're on the level of Brutal Mario, VIP 5, the final submap of Super Puzzle World 3 and that fancy looking overworld shown at the recent C3.

Level wise... it looks good. Nothing wrong with it, just that it seems a bit underwhelming compared to the sheer brilliance of the overworld style, in that the graphics seem like a mix of your overworld style and redrawn graphics (and the sprites/decoration clash massively, although I probably shouldn't be the one saying this).

But what can I say other than it seems like one of the most promising hacks I have ever seen, and I really hope to see more screenshots and videos of the levels.

Have you added any custom sprites or overworld sprites by the way? The latter could go really well with your current fancy overworld.

That means a lot, coming from you and the overworlds you have going on! I do not have custom sprites of any kind unfortunately, but considering the reception I'm getting on these screen shots alone, I think I should consider it.

I plan on eventually redrawing absolutely everything, but the Mario sprite will probably be the very last sprite I'll do.

My reaction after seeing those screens is "HOLY SHIT!!"
The graphics are impressive. I really like how the land goes through the water too.

I can see one error. In the first Mushpole Marsh screen there's a little bit of green where the small mushroom tops meet the stem.
Time to break out my hack thread commenting system for this thread.

Overworld
One of the most impressive overworlds I've seen in a long time. Great graphics, awesomely designed, and the terrain is mixed up very nicely with some completely new graphics as well.
Thumbs up.

Level Design
Looks alright. It's hard to get a good grasp of level design from just screen shots, but overall, well, it's nothing special from what I can see. The level design is actually kind of hard to pick out because I'm instantly looking at how nice the graphics and effects are.

Graphics/Palettes
Speaking of graphics and effects... Wow. These are amazing. The water effect in Clammy Cove, like you said, isn't perfect yet, but it has a terrific look to it, as do the brambles 'wrapping' themselves around everything in Razor Road. Sweet.
The rest of the graphics are very, uh, texture-y, and look great.

Misc
The status bar is a nice touch, and fits the rest of the graphics.
Cool plot there too, though, when it's boiled down to the core it's a pretty basic thing. (As seen in the tl;dr)

Errors
I see none.

Summary
The graphics are some of the best I've seen lately, and the level design works. Great overworld, and no errors. The plot's nice, as well as the status bar.
Fantastic job.

Wow! I never thought that I would get such a great reception from these few screens alone! I was planning on releasing the hack with three main worlds, but considering the kind of feedback I'm getting from these alone, I think I should bump that number up.

I need to release more screen shots so that you can get a better understanding of the levels. Also, it should be mentioned that the majority of the levels in the game are 'action,' but castles, palaces, and ghost houses are more 'puzzle.'

Lastly, I am considering offering this hack for testing, or perhaps even an LP; if anyone is interested, then feel free to message me about it.

I'd definitely like to test it, I love trying out interesting hacks like this, and if the level design is as good as the graphics, I'd probably really enjoy playing this game.

Cool hack. If I wasn't sick, I'd definitely like to LP this.

Good fucking bye.
Screen shot time! This time, I'll explore stages not seen in the previous screens; two main stages, a bonus stage, and a hidden stage.

Rugged Rally, the ever so mountainous stage before Madness Mirrors.

Canopy Cutters, the last stage in Briar Boscage before the castle.

=D='s Bonus Rails! A bonus game revolving around block 1E6, which causes sprites to frictionlessly slide across it.

And lastly, Cloudy Carnivores. Is this acceptable? I always wondered why I haven't seen anything like this before.

Although since the overworld is apparently the best thing evar, here are the two submaps completed:
Balmy Bay
Briar Boscage

Awesome graphics and level design! I'm loving EVERYTHING I see here! #w{=3}

And I can see NO errors anywhere.
Flying Munchers, wait'll the Hack Mods see this. :)

The graphics look great! The rails look sorta weird imo, but all the other graphics look well made. They sorta give off a Donkey Kong Country feel.
Man, this hack has some great graphics, especially your newest stuff: those line guides, ropes, and mountain GFX are pretty sweet.

I went and tried out tile 1E6, and it's pretty freaky. Good idea to use it in a level the way you are!

I look forward to more awesomeness from you. :]

EDIT: LV UP!

So yeah, I'm not really going to be posting for a while. Not that anyone cares.

Heh. It's a pretty interesting idea. I think it'd look better if the wings were more... attached to the munchers, but I think it's alright how it is now too.

Nice screenshots, by the way.

Aw, I'm a bit disappointed that nobody posted here for five days, but I suppose that's to be expected when I'm not really updating on anything.

The main overworld is the subject here; allow me to show you the new overworld I spent a few hours making, and the old one that I was withholding from you for whatever reason.

The left one is new, and the right one is old. I'm not done with the newer overworld, but once I get all of the submaps done, I will definitely use the empty space completely around the main islands. Also, they take place near space. I don't remember why, but I swore I had a reason at some point.

Well, it looks really good! I like te look of the grass and trees. A couple things:

1. The dirt seems odd to me. I don't really like the dark "speckles" in them.

2. The bricks on the edges don't look good to me, so you might want to change that.

3. The island with the grayish ground in the second pic has some perspective areas with the dirt. There's too many lines.

Just fix these and you're good with me.

I'm not using the second overworld; I put that there for those who were curious.

I will consider your first point, though. I wanted to use some other, more appropriate colors, but then they would flash yellow during an event and that looks rather ugly.

...I wonder why I didnt comment on this yet.

Your graphic style looks really cool, the level design seems fun, and your OW is just amazing. I'll be looking forward to what you're doing next!
