That's kind of what print is used for in GPS.

A quick in-LM "Edit Description" option would be convenient for those who can't into ASM.

If it helps, I've got this wall of utter satanism that patches a few functions in ntdll to switch the Windows A APIs to the only good Unicode encoding, UTF-8. Feel free to steal it. Docs in the header.

Looks interesting, might play with it a bit later though I'd be a bit concerned about future compatibility.

I think the SMW hacking community should at least try to get together and work on a community-contributed editor. (Maybe FuSoYa can contribute code for the most basic features found in LM, as a form of compromise.)

Erm, I don't think I'd want to spend more time on a second SMW level editor... one has already been more than enough for me.

Were people to make a new editor, would there be a problem with reverse engineering and reimplementing LM features, like exanimation? Not directly ripped code, but original reimplementations.

As long as it's reimplemented with your own code, it shouldn't be an issue. Data compatibility with LM formats is also fine, in case you're wondering.

As far as suggestions go, I was wondering if there could be some way to start in-editor emulation from the midpoint rather than the entrance. Not sure if it's worth implementing when you could just move the entrance temporarily but it can get slightly annoying when you have to do it all the time.

You'd have to modify the DLL first to provide a method to request starting at the midway point. But I'm not sure how many people would want to bother with remembering a separate keyboard shortcut for that over just dragging the main entrance.

An in-editor ability to edit custom block text would be cool.

Might be a bit convenient now and then, but any text editor can edit the file that holds those...
Why do you nerds think you need a new editor? Lunar Magic is the best rom hacking tool to date. Don't belive me, go try hacking something else,. You'll come back crawling on your hands and knees. You people gotta stop reinventing wheel all the time."If it aint broke, don't fix it."
It may be the best ROM hacking tool (even that is debateable), but it's certainly far from the best level editor. That's completely besides the point, though. The desire to have a new, open-source SMW level editor has nothing to do with how good or bad Lunar Magic is, which becomes clear once you read more than just the last two or three posts. In general it's not wise to drop into a discussion when you don't even know what the discussion is actually about.
Feel free to visit my website/blog - it's updated rarely, but it looks pretty cool!
Thanks just the same, I understand the point. It's pointless, I have used alot of editors LM is hands down the best. If you know a better one your more welcome to point it out. If LM was never touched again it would still be best. I have a right to state my opinion wether anyone likes it or not. If someone comes out with something "better"it will probably mean other tools, patches, will be required to change because of hijacks. Which means people end up getting force fed the new content that probably only works for half the cumunity.
Sorry just being real...

That being said I'll mozy on some where else.

It's not about making levels, but more being able to edit SMW's internal code more drastically, look at what Sonic's been able to do.
If all you do is vanilla levels than really, whether you use LM or not doesn't really matter in the end, you'll still be able to make your levels either way.

And I'm pretty sure what level editors are in development rn (Horrowind, Katrina, FL4SHK whenever he gets started) will be sure to be compatible with the currently used tools before release, it's just common sense.

also you say that like PIXI's entire existence wasn't forcefed to the community

Would FuSoYa mind if I made a separate thread about alternate editors in SMW Hack Discussion so we're not killing his thread with constant derails?

How is he an authority on what threads we have here..?

You literally cannot reasonably "patent" the idea of animating tiles in a SNES game. That would be ludicrous. Like, if that were to turn into an issue I think the general response would just be "too bad, we're doing it anyway".

Unless it somehow actually turns into a legal thing (which I doubt it can given the nature of it just being a level editor tool) I'll just go ahead and say that LM existing or having something would not stand in the way of anything because quite honestly that would be incredibly silly.

It's not really any more silly than some of the other attitudes displayed, and the state of copyright and IP in the world at large has gotten me feeling down recently, so I felt it important to ask.

Good that that's cleared up.

you hit the nail on head.. Quite frankly I'm pist about that, It's not first time either. In the middle of sa-1 hack blocks were remoderated to gps which at time refused to add sa-1 support. I was able add it but i doubt i did it correctly and it'll probably break someday down the road..I don't want it to happen again. Otherwise then that I don't mind what folks you do.

A lot has changed since LM was created. For one thing, it's designed to work best on Windows desktop PCs. Tablets and mobile devices are much more widespread now.
^ please don't forget the amount of people who use Mac OS X or Linux distros

LM works fine through wine from what I've been able to tell.

There is a few hiccups with the drop down menus, but otherwise fully functioning in wine.
Nearly all of it works, but some minor stuff doesn't. Nothing important, not even inconvenient, everything worthwhile acts as it should.

The Alt-mouse shortcuts aren't available, my window manager turns that into the 'move/resize window' shortcuts.

And I can click inactive buttons by pushing the mouse while over an active toolbar button, moving it to a disabled, and release. Here's the OW editor with no ROM.

(yes, that's a bug in Wine, no point fixing in LM. Still bug.)

I think this is pretty irrelevant because hacking often involves having multiple windows open, which is not feasible on the shitty terrible "app system" where only one thing is active at once. Not to be elitist but I just don't think serious work projects should be attempted on systems like that.

And what if that is all that's available to someone? They should just not make hacks period?
There is a cutting-off point, yes. If you have a program so clearly suited to PCs with its required multiple-key keyboard shortcuts and PC-optimized layout that you can't port to android without changing the program fundamentally, it's not getting a port. You can't expect someone to port a program to every available platform because some single person X might only have access to one platform.

So yes, if you have a tablet and not a PC, you're screwed. And no, that's probably not going to change any time soon.
FAKE EDIT: Noivern posted before I could and already made my point for me but I'm posting anyway
====
What are you asking? That they "should" do something that's impossible?

No, if someone doesn't have a computer, they shouldn't do things you need a computer to do. Not everything can be ported; some activities are just too complex and reliant on features like multiple windows and file browsing.
