Graphical Aspects

I've been thinking on how we're gonna approach the graphical aspect of this hack. Are we going for a cartoony style like last time or something more redrawn-esque?

Personally I'd like to see the same style as in SMWCP, that is cartoony. Will people be able to choose the sets themselves or are we going to have prepared sets and have people choose from those? I don't know all the details about the freespace issue regarding the first offshoot created with SMWC's community effort so I'm not sure how we're going to solve this one.

But what I mainly want to ask with this thread - theoretically seen for now - is, would something like Yoshi's Island tilesets be allowed in the hack, that is if we're going with a cartoony style and appropriate world theme(s) will be implemented? Those sets consume more space than the average SMAS set but maybe more people will be able to utilize them at the expense of ditching a different graphic set chosen specifically for their own level.

I'm working on a Yoshi's Island Snow/Ice tileset as we speak (no worries, if it's not gonna make it into the hack, I'll submit it or find another use for it) and wanted to know if it'd be alright to include it in this game. Any input?
Well, I personaly liked the cartoony style that SMWCP has so I think it would be the best to keep it that way. As for the YI tileset, it does take up more space but it keeps the cartoony style.
Nothing to see here. Move along.
Yes, I agree we should stick with a cartoony style. As for YI graphics, I've never been a big fan myself, so I'm biased there.
I agree with the more cartoony style with pronounced black outlines and all that. I'll be whipping up some graphics for the hack and I can bend my style to pretty much whatever we ultimately decide upon, so yeah.
Personally I don't mind any graphics style (unless it's crap/overused/etc.) as long as they don't clash. This was kind of a problem in SMWCP, and shouldn't be in SMWCP II. In my opinion, we should just have a small team of graphics designers who'll be doing the global graphics. Also, people obviously shouldn't allowed to randomly pick a graphics tileset for their levels otherwise we'll probably be having clashing graphics issues again.

As for the graphics style, I'm also in favor of a cartoony style much like in SMWCP.
I vote for a cartoony style. The question is the outlining. Should one go with the traditional black outlines or should one go with the "darkened version of the current color area" outline style?

Here's an extremely crappy sprite I threw together where I colored the outlines differently, as an example:

Also, what's with people's constant fixation with YI graphics? How about some originality for once? -_-

THANK YOU!

Also, cartoony, its just more fun that way, but I prefer the black outlines, I never really liked the darkened color outlines.
Yeah, cartoony, but not YI, I agree on that.
I've realized this was outdated.
Yes Cartoony...i'm agreed too
I like cartoon-ish gfx. And I like Smallhackers custom rex. I like both, but the one with the black outline looks like it doesn't have enough colors; but I don't like GFX with darkened outlines. So why not add a black outline to the rex that has the darkened outline? That way it doesn't have a one-color and 8-bit-ish feel, but a more 16-bit feel. And, maybe the purple outline should be changed to a darker blue. But no YI, it won't fit the SMWCP feel.

Let's keep it not so cartoony, it'll just make the hack look not so serous. Which it is/should be.
Alright alright, no Yoshi's Island tilesets. It was simply a suggestion. Since I assembled the tiles falsely anyway, it doesn't matter anymore.

Then we need a team ready to draw graphics for the entire hack, preferably by as less people as possible to keep a mostly consistent style. I sure as heck won't draw unless low-quality crap is appreciated. So, who's up for some work? There's a handful of stuff I personally would need already.
I would like to draw them, i could adapt myself for any style needed. I can also re-draw some GFX to fit said style.

My goal, as stated in a different thread, was to ensure this hack ends up being as unique as possible via compositions, via custom tilesets, etc. I know the user Pheonix has already made an industrial grassland tileset for the first world which isn't all that cartoony (though not realistic either). We should be fine with having a slight mix, as long as we don't end up with clashes like in the last game (i.e. oh god brambles and the DKC2 tileset). Just keep everything 2D and not overly complicated.

2D, basically saying that we shouldn't have something like this:

<Mario's Head>
-Tile 25- <Mario's Feet>
-Tile 130/100> Ground

The listed "Tile 25" being something with a decoration, like floor behind him parse. If you don't want any of that, I'm game.

I myself am hoping to be a part of this production. It was already humiliating enough not being a part of something almost the whole known community was into.
The formatting of your post didn't work, but when I say "no 3D", I mean "no pseudo-3D", like the DKC2 brambles set was (there was another iffy set in the hack too, but I forget what it was). If we can avoid that, it shouldn't be too hard to avoid graphical clashes unless someone dumps photograph-quality graphics in or something.
I hope to be able to draw at least some graphics. I really like drawing stuff.
I'm all for cartoony because that's easier to draw sprites in and I sure as hell am going to contribute graphics again.
