progress

NOTE: I left out a BG because I'm not sure on that yet -- I'd like something like this with polluted water in place of the lava. When this is all finished, I picture a Layer 3 tide in front of everything, but not really interactable -- basically making this a flooded plant castle. Oh, and I'll make some custom colorful Munchers to replace these.

I've never really been obsessed with brambles like a lot of other people here, but I thought this would work really well with this castle, so here is one of the rooms I recently finished. I have another two sublevels to finish up, I believe, which should not take me long at all. I am on schedule to finish by Saturday, even though I've used most of the time allowed.

I find the red koopa's look a bit weird... maybe another sort of red, but yeah.

@screenshot 3: 2 munchers aren't attached to something alse, which looks a bit weird; the rest jus comes out of the ground/water

BRIAR MIRE

Leave any feedback in my thread, please.

NOTE: Pretend the Munchers and briars can actually hurt you. Also, ignore the unfinished ending.

As I said before, the level plays out great, I think the only other thing that I would change is the location of the first SMWC coin; its too easy to get. Other than that, great job.

I should have something witty to put here (even if it's just to update dated info), shouldn't I?

I agree, the level plays out pretty great and the music compliments it very well. However:

Note Mario.

I agree, this SMWCoin needs to be moved somewhere else and/or just made harder to get.

Effortless 1up.

Kinda strange that this waterfall does nothing.

Minor/Trival: Perhaps add a splashing effect where the fall and the stream meet?

2nd and 3rd SMWCoins are way too close to one another.

Small amount of a stray line over beneath that right bramble. (check the right side of the pipe Mario's standing on)

I'd recommend hiding all of the coins a bit better, really. The first, as noted, is basically not hidden at all. The second is hidden, but in such a way that it's actually slightly more obvious than the main path; put a Piranha Plant or something in the pipe (so that it doesn't seem so conspicuously empty) and have the vine leading to the rest of the level already growing out of the block (so the player's very first instinct won't be to continue to the left), and perhaps just put the path to the third one a bit more out of sight (or relocate it elsewhere, as it is, as noted, a bit too close to the second).

That 1-up struck me as disconcertingly obvious as well. Putting it in an invisible block or hiding it behind a layer-priority-enabled object might help.
Great level indeed. You mentioned to me in a PM that you wanted to do a final stretch with the Pirhanglers, and while I didn't really agree with it before, I think I'd love to see it if you can get them recoded (think you mentioned someone was going to do so). The reason I'm saying that is because the level as a whole actually feels a just a little short, especially in the second half. It's up to you though - if things don't work out with the Pirhangler, then you can just stick the boss room at the second midway.

For consistency purposes, I think all Venus Fire Traps in this castle should only fire one fireball and not two.

Once the briars actually hurt you, I can tell this will be a bit of a difficult jump to make without getting hit (assuming you're big).

Other than that, great work.

Oh yeah, I'm not sure how much this'll help you, but there are some green Piranha Plants in the base ROM that behave like normal ones except that they will always ignore Mario's location. (Sprite 85) Extra bit determines whether it's normal or upside down.

For the first SMWC coin, how about put it near the top of the screen and have both sides of it surrounded by briars? (the ceiling would be normal solid blocks). Then have a bounce block near the bottom of the screen and make the player utilize the Magikoopa to remove a barrier on top of it?
Also, regarding the level's title, "Briar Mire" is very clever, and rhyme alliterations haven't been used very much yet. However, as a suggestion, what about "Briar Bastion"? It implies that it's a castle instead of a normal swamp. Maybe some briars could be added to the swampy environment as you get closer to the castle it's self. Though, both names are still fitting, so it's your call.

Hmmm, have those been used in any levels prior to the second castle? I think a fair warning should be given to the player that the green piranha plants can come out of the pipes even when Mario's near them, if they're being used anywhere for the first time.

Only Level 130 (Myrkka Mainline) uses them currently, so no.

Just giving a quick non-update. This level is more or less in the can with some of the changes suggested by reviewers. (Thanks guys.) I am basically just waiting to hear back on a bit of asm before submitting it to Satan's Naughty Nipples.

Think we can get an updated IPS for the rest of us? Base ROM updates are going to be less commonplace at this stage of progress.

Its been about a week and a half. Any new updates for us?

This looks...rather grim. I think it's another case of red palette shenanigans.
