Hey, we've got a thread about original enemies...so I figured why not have one for the other things that most commonly help/hinder the player in platformers: the gimmicky sprite/tile objects themselves!

I don't have too many ideas yet, but I will start with a very simple one: a trash sprite that spawns from a predetermined location at regular intervals, falls into lava, and takes a second or two to dissolve (if you've played Megaman 7, think of the garbage that falls into the lava on the hidden path where the Rush letter is in Junkman's stage). Mario can jump on it, but he needs to quickly get off of it lest he fall into the lava when the block disappears!

Needless to say, these blocks would probably appear in some of the factory stages and would be more commonly seen in world 8.

What are some other types of platform gimmicks we could have? Nothing TOO convoluted, mind you; just something that might be beneficial that isn't in vanilla Super Mario World. In other words: keep it simple and fun.
You know those brown bobbing lava/water platforms? I'd like to see one of them that moves to the right with the same bobbing motion when you jump on it. It'd be like the skull raft, but more unstable. I think it's been disassembled too, so it should be as easy as fiddlign with $B6,x.
What about a lid on a 32 pixel wide steam pipe? Every once in a while it'll shoot the lid off, displaying the smoke effect, and you can stand on the lid to get some height.

--------------------

I also like the idea of a temporary platform "shooter". Not much else to say about this.

For a layer 2 gimmick, how about a generator that first plays the earthquake sound effect, along with screen shaking, and lowers layer 2 in one tile increments (scroll down one slowly, pause, repeat)? It would be cool for a collapsing building or something.
Liking all the ideas presented thus far here. :) Glad I made the thread now.

Here's another one: a platform that swings in a U-shape and is affected by Mario's momentum and velocity. You can run back and forth on it to make it swing higher and faster. I realize there's something similar in SMW already, but the difference here is that this one doesn't make a full circle.

We could also have our own variation of the roulette block in SMW. You hit it and it either gives you nothing, a coin, five coins, a power-up, spawns an enemy, or (in rare cases), a 1-up.
How about some SMB1 falling platforms? They were the ones that fell as soon as you landed on them but stopped falling immediately if you jumped off them.

For levels that use layer 3 tide how about also a brown bobbing platform that moves left with the tide like the yellow spiked balls do.

I like the Plattforms you can jump on. Like the one in NSMB. This Mushroom Ledges.
How about the platforms from spacejunk galaxy in smg, the ones that apear when you are near, but dissapear when you are away.

Beat blocks would be cool, but probably wouldn't be used properly so never mind that I mentioned it. How about trampoline/bouncy pink mushroom?

I've realized this was outdated.

I think they could potentially work. Remember: level design is going to have some very close scrutiny this time around, so we'll all pitch in and make sure those sections are balanced.
@ Zephyr
Yeah. That's waht I mean.
Carrying on from something I said in another post. How about a elevator Thowmp, A type of Thwomp that after it tries to crush you, can entered and used as a elevator.
We need a 32x32 key that makes you unable to swim or jump very high while holding it. It would be both ridiculous and awesome for puzzles.

Also grinders that go up and down on the sides of walls. Yes.
Grinders on walls, that's an awesome idea!

(Tricky spinjumping to get an SMWC coin)?
A platform that acts similar to a trapdoor (begins to shake, then suddenly swings open, then closes and repeats) but also follows a designated path? (visually represented with a simple black line)

Hope you have a fantastic day.
I like the steam pipe idea. Another possibility would be to have a platform on top of some sort of geyser that goes up when the geyser does and falls back down when the geyser shuts off. I guess it would be sort of like the whale spouts in 4-2 of SMB2, if they had SMW floating platforms atop them. Also, has anyone ever played Mega Man 10 or seen a playthrough of it? You know those treadmill platform things in Sheep Man's stage? Those would be interesting in SMW. Speaking of Mega Man...what about disappearing blocks that, instead of disappearing and reappearing at set intervals, disappeared and reappeared based on another block being touched? Like, stepping on block 1 makes blocks 2 and 3 appear, stepping on block 2 makes blocks 1 and 3 disappear and block 4 appear, stepping on block 3 makes block 1 disappear and blocks 5 and 6 appear...it could make for an interesting puzzle. They could even be color-coded to show which set they belong to (like, stepping on a red block causes all blue blocks to appear and all green ones to disappear).

What about something like the "Gate" things used in NSMB? You know, in the world 2 sewer level and such.

Maybe better if getting those sort of platforms in the last level, those are in 2D XD

Very Fast edit: GRAVITY THINGS!!! Like in some bowser levels in SMG, Flip-out galaxy things in SMG 2, Gravity doors in SPM in the Whoa Zone

I don't know, sounds kind of tricky to do. Both in making and playing. The controls would get confusing when you are upside down or sideways.
