ReCAPTCHA

Yeah.

We got a shitloads of spambots over the past hours, apparently, so now I have implemented reCAPTCHA on the registration page in place of the old weary "confirmation code". This should hopefully keep them at bay.
Jokes aside I guess this will stop spambots in general in the future. They weren't really spambots anyway since they just registered, added crap to their layouts and bios and didn't go further than that. They only kept registering again and again because we were banning them. Ceasing the banning seemed to slow them down.
Oh, but they were spambot IPs.

At least, some of them were.
My response is:
<object width="480" height="390"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/teiFhzUMmbw?fs=1&hl=pl_PL&rel=0"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/teiFhzUMmbw?fs=1&hl=pl_PL&rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="390"></embed></object>

No, I don't think the reCAPTCHA is safe enough. But it might stop idiot robots.
reCAPTCHA is very safe. The second word isn't for the purpose of stopping spammers. As you may or may not know, (since it is public knowledge) reCAPTCHA is a project that helps digitize books. It works by providing two words: one it knows the answer for and one it doesn't. It is then assumed that if you can spell one word correctly, the other one is correct, too. All the words you see come from scans of books (with additional distortion added for extra security). Of course, there are retards who do as you demonstrate in the video: sabotage the project. This doesn't make the CAPTCHA any less safe, mind you.
I'm glad something was done about those annoying bots, they registered over what was it again, 50 times? But anyways, it's safe, and it works from what we can see so far, so I have no problems with it.
I think this code should be also implemented in the wiki, I've seen many spambots (well, I think they are) writing articles and uploading files about insurances in SMWiki.
Good idea. I will get on that.

There is nice plugin to do that ;) which requires to do reCAPTCHA when registering accounts, making edits as anonymous and inserting any kind of URLs to page.
Not to be a naysayer, but didn't people figure out how to solve CAPTCHAs or does that only apply to particular kinds?
Your layout has been removed.

From what I know, there's no particular bot to solve reCAPTACHAs, which is what Kieran is using at the moment. reCAPTACHAs are way more varying in style than normal CAPTACHAs (but reCAPTCHAs can also be impossible to solve, but it's actually possible to skip those if you're human :/ ).

tl;dr: Yes, there's bots that could potentially solve these captachas, but it's very unlikely that they've solved reCAPTCHAs (considering they're still used).
ReCAPTCHA is pretty solid I think, but maybe in the future bots will be able to solve even those.
Violators will be prosecutedt to the full extent of the jam.
