HDMA stands for Horizontal Direct Memory Access, and is a way to change visual settings (like palette colours, colour maths, brightness, windowing, or even layer positions) on a scanline-per-scanline basis. And DMA (which, as you might guess, simply means Direct Memory Access) is a way of moving large quantities of data, such as layer tilemaps, graphics, or HDMA tables, to RAM.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong; I'm not exactly an expert on the subject myself.

so the mario dma patch moves the extra tiles of mario to freerom,wich is DMAed in game?

this hack Im making. im using the star sprite for my overworld because it can have a name to ebut i changed it into another image but for some reason when i try usin it on this one world its wont go back to the bigger overworld part can anyone help me and tell me whats wrong with it please and thank you

I think the problem is that your tiles aren't linking. You either need a star, a pipe or an exit tile for the player to warp to different worlds. I advise looking here, specifically the last section on more info about overworld linking.
I was hoping to make a "still" title screen for my hack, but I dont know how to make it not do anything. I know how to make Mario do nothing,
but I was wondering about the title screen itself.

Go to the ROM map and do the hex edit at $00:9C82

This may seem like a strange question to ask, but does anyone know how to determine where Mario ends up from the glitch after taking 256 screen exits?

Most of the time, it seems to lead back to the start of the level, but at a different X/Y position, and with the no-Yoshi intro turned on/off (the opposite of what it was before). However, sometimes it leads elsewhere (in that case, from level 111 to 135-- I doubt the difference of 0x24 is a coincidence)...

I have a serious problem, everytime I insert custom sprites in my ROM, when I open it with an emulator... it crashes.

If you might want to know, I'm using Romi's sprite tool.

Same post as the one in the Official Tool/Sprite/Etc. Help Thread.

May be the sprites. Some sprites (Dynamic I am pretty sure is an example here) crash unless the rom is patched.

Have you expanded the rom? And are you using Lunar Magic version 1.65+? Because I am pretty sure from what I remember you can't use Romi's spritetool with lower than 1.65

My ROM is 4MB, and I'm using LM 1.82. If this might be of some relevance, I applied the FastROM patch.

Well, what sprites are you inserting? And are you inserting them into the right slots?
00-BF Sprites
C0-CF Shooters
D0-DF Generators
