Find Roy's Dignity

Paper Mario Fuzzy graphics? Sweet!

Anyway, Roy, this hack looks awesome. I've seen you talking about it in #serioushax and I'm glad to see there's a thread about it. You're an awesome hacker, and I'm sure any ASM you do will be great (like the whole day/night system), along with good level design.

Can't wait for this!
This looks very cool. The day/night system is interesting, and that pause menu...man. Now I want to code a pause menu for my own hack...I was just going to use Iceguy and Bio's. I'm curious to see what things like the "metal detector" will do, too. Also, it's nice to see somebody finally using one of my disassemblies, although I wish you'd use your ASM skills to code your own line-guide routine (and do it in a way that is more customizable, is more efficient, and actually makes sense). This is one hack I'll definitely have to check up on.

I'm working on a hack! Check it out here. Progress: 63/95 levels.
They look funny. I like them.

Yeah, looks pretty much way better than the old ones.
Haha, leod said it right. You seem to have some sort of obsession with that tileset. :P

Anyway, the hack is looking great and it's definitely one I'm looking forward to playing (as long as it isn't cancelled >_>). The day/night system is pretty awesome especially given some stuff varies depending on what time of the day it is. The BG in the first level sucks, though.
Oh, and by the way, the main reason I don't use Sumo Brothers much is because of SMW's broken OAM system. The cluster sprites that make up the flames...well, they were brilliantly coded in such a way that they glitch up with any sprite memory other than 07, EVEN WITH THE NO SPRITE TILE LIMITS PATCH, which sucks because sprite memory setting 07 allows only a measly 5 sprites on the screen. If I ever make my own cluster sprites for the flames or something, I'd use them a lot more.

Hm, sprite memory setting 00 works pretty fine with it, but I see where you are coming from. I may try to fix the flames on that aspect too.

Iceguy: Yeah, I am most likely going to change the background.

I really like what I saw, The fact that time ''passes by'' is pretty neat #w{:>}
Your layout has been removed.
Been pretty busy the past week or two or so, and that won't change a lot the upcoming weeks, but it doesn't mean I don't have any progress at all.

Did I finish level 1 yet? Nope, because of said business, but I made some advancements - the first half (outside) is done, the second half (cave + a small stretch of outside area) is a WIP.

Let me show some new, perhaps for the Dutch people slightly old (because I've shown some concepts in the Dutch thread already) pictures:

As you can see, I made a few graphical adjustments to the FG, and revised the BG entirely. Thanks to Broozer for the amazingly detailed dunes BG - the palms were ripped from SMB2 and made thinner, to give it more of a beach feeling rather than a desert. (Honestly, I doubt if I succeeded in that.)

Coins, ? blocks, used blocks, water, etc. are now all in the style of SMB3.

Of course I had to include Spittin' Fuzzy.

The "advanced" route, where you can find the metal detector. All in all it's not really tough, but some parts can be tricky if you haven't seen them yet.

What's this? Fuzzies that aren't on line guides? Yessiree, a new challenger approaches: Hopping Fuzzies a la Paper Mario. They don't exactly drain Mario's life sources yet, but maybe I'll make them do that. It would certainly look much fancier than a generic 'hurt Mario' animation, no?
The little one can be a hell to get across since he's in a narrow passage. Because his X speed varies every time he jumps, however, it's only waiting until he gets out of the passage one way or another again so you can cross safely. (Normally you can cross the passage too, but it's more difficult.)

And this cave is WIP. Last week I wanted to add in the Layer 3 pillars SMB3 has too, but because of a sudden breakdown of the internet, I couldn't download Layer 3 ExGFX. Now I got it back, so yeah... better get to work.

Last but not least, I posted to announce that World 1 will have a total of five bosses, and I already have every one of them planned out.
What do you say, Roy? Five bosses in one world? Isn't that overkill? Doesn't that defeat the purpose of a boss?
Well, certainly not, because as a matter of fact, 2 are optional and cannot be found easily, 2 other ones belong to a fortress or castle and, well okay, 1 of them is pretty generic, I suppose.

All fine and all, but who or what are these bosses? I shall explain, and they all fit in with the main theme of the hack: dignity.

#1: Ferdinand Y. Fuzzy. Him again...
Being my first boss ever, made in May 2008, I could not possibly exclude him. That would harm my dignity.
Oh, you don't know him? That's okay, I didn't expect you to. His first version was this.
Right now, though, instead of throwing Fuzzies and jumping around to no end, I want him to do something much different. Much more... intelligent. What exactly that will be, you will see soon enough. {B)

Note: Optional boss.

#2: Jr. Troopa. That wimp?!
Yep. Anyone who played Paper Mario will know this little fella. What does he have to with dignity? Everything! Or should I say nothing, actually - because if there's anyone who pwned his dignity time after time, it would have been Mario. (And you, being the player of the game.)
I am planning on a slightly different approach than a direct rip of Paper Mario, but attacks will largely be the same - that is, largely the same as the final version of Jr. Troopa in the game. The first few Jr. Troopas would be way too easy and not much of a challenge, considering he is the boss of the fortress.

Note: Mandatory boss.

#3: Smallhacker Now this is where it gets tricky...
The king of dignity stealing. Once you think you have the right letter or word, he will swing the banhammer from n00b to n00b and crush you with it.
In all honesty, I have not yet decided what attacks I am going to give Smalls, but it will certainly be something that would fit him. {B)

Note: Optional boss.

#4: Mr. Mole Moles have no dignity.
Okay, this one is pretty generic, I guess, but I will do this one for certain. A 64x64 mole with sunglasses and various attacks, such as suddenly spawning a couple of moles, or crushing Mario.
I'll give you that - I was uninspired when dreaming up this boss idea, but I'll give this a try anyway. Who knows, it might turn out to be the best of the five!

Note: Mandatory boss.

#5: Ersanio. This floating Muncher needs some more AIR!
Need I say more? No spoilers on this one except for the fact that I will use a lolwut pear to symbolize Ersanio. Oh, and Munchers will be present. Large Munchers. Carnivorous Munchers.
Prepare yourselves... I have great plans with this boss. {B)

Note: Mandatory boss.

That's it for today, I suppose. Until next update then!

Post 5000. Yay!

Dammit Roy I wanted you to make a milestone thread for your 5000th D:<

Either way some cool looking shots you got there. I also briefly skimmed the boss list (I'll take a good look later) and there appear to be some interesting ideas.

Looks good so far, Roy. The SMB3 graphics fit in well with the rest of the game.

I also think you should add in a secret smkdan boss.
GvS @smwcentral.net ~ u:11380
Cool. I like the HDMA like always and the level looks pretty good designed. I do think riding a line guided Fuzzy and jumping over Munchers is just a tad too much for level 1. The perspective of the tree is pretty weird in the BG too.

But this looks very promising =D

Eh, the line-guided part is completely optional to follow - it's the "hard path". You don't have to follow it.

@TanookiMan: Heh, yeah, I was planning several other bosses for later worlds, but these are just for World 1. There will be many more bosses in the game.

I admit, I have nothing on the other hacks currently being made, but this one made my jaw drop to the floor, and it's the first one that has in a long time. If all hacks but five had to be cancelled, it would definitely be on my list. I found the jumping fuzzy and spittin' fuzzy to be very creative.

My only complaint, though, is if the HDMA could be a tiny bit smoother. It's probably just me though.

And I may be on my own on this, but I really like it when there are multiple bosses in a single world. Can't wait to play the full version!
Nice to see that you are working on a hack again! This looks pretty fun so far! Everything is looking great!

Are you using RPG Hacker's VWF Patch, or did you code your own? I'm just curious.

You and your Fuzzies. #w{xD}

[?] Miscellaneous Helpful Hints
If I moderated your hack, there was apparently a 90 percent chance it was rejected.
For this I <3 You Roy.

I'll see what I can do about it. Also, I am planning a small addition to my day-night cycle system after being envious of Sonikku's system: I am now going to change the HDMA background per minute to make it less sudden.

I am using RPG Hacker's VWF Patch, yep, I find it to be a very impressive patch. Only thing I am going to tweak (still have yet to do) is a small bug that appears in bsnes when the message pops up, in coexistence with my HDMA backgrounds - the HDMA background and some palette colours screw up briefly. Maybe they use the same (H)DMA channels or something, I don't know what the cause of that is yet, but I will definitely fix it.

Yep, that is indeed what's causing it. I've run into that problem too, and fixed it by simply avoiding channel 4.

Thought I should let you know. ;) I'm liking what I've seen so far by the way - I'm looking forward to actually play a hack of yours for once.

I see you took my suggestion from #serioushax and used Broozer's desert BG. ;)

Also is there anything you CAN'T do with ASM, Roy?
I dunno.

Anyway:

A smoother day-night cycle system than before.

Some of the gradients still look a little bit choppy, but I can refine them later. But alas, I am pretty much done with this now. It took me quite some time and, not to forget, space - I think the whole deal takes up about ~15000 bytes. =P
Although that's not a problem because I place all of that data beyond bank $C0 anyway. Plenty of space still!

Right now I am attempting to draw a metal detector. Lol... it's not extremely successful. But until I am done with the metal detector, I cannot continue on level 1 (Short Dunes) yet. It's vital for the outcome of this level. :P
