Disaster in Japan - 8.9-magnitude quake strikes the country

This just happened just moments ago.

A massive 8.9-magnitude quake has hit northeast Japan, causing a four-metre tsunami along parts of the country's
coastline.

Japan's NHK television reported many injuries and showed pictures of major tsunami damage in the north, with cars, trucks and houses being swept away in Onahama city in Fukushima prefecture following the quake on Friday.

Police said at least one person was killed in a house collapse in Ibaraki prefecture, just northeast of Tokyo and there were reports of at least one death in Fukushima prefecture,

A 10-metre tsunami hit Sendai airport in the north-east. Television footage showed people standing on the roof of the terminal building.

The tsunami roared over embankments in Sendai city, washing cars, houses and farm equipment inland before reversing directions and carrying them out to sea. Flames shot from some of the houses, probably because of burst gas
pipes.

Military airplanes were flying over the worst-affected areas to assess the need for rescue efforts and an emergency cabinet meeting was held.

This is absolutely massive and devastating. I honestly just don't know what to say. Jesus Christ.

«@Chillarmy» oh my jesus

I was following this for about half an hour. I can't help but feel no sympathy or empathy towards the Japanese people or the surrounding countries that are being affected by the earthquakes and the Tsunami

Tsunami Alert for New Zealand, the Philippines, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Hawaii, and others. Waves expected over the next few hours, caused by 8.9 earthquake in Japan.

but rather I find this as entertaining news. I feel like a horrible person ... but eh. People wouldn't show much interest unless they actually felt emotionally connected with the people there, which a majority of us aren't.

Regardless I send my prayers to the people. Hopefully they'll overcome this, but seeing the live footage about 4 hours ago on TV didn't make it look like it was going to be easy to bounce back.

Also if one person makes a 2012 comment I will send them disturbing and suggestive images via PM of me in a bikini. No one wants to see that.
This whole situation is just so "disbelieving"
I have a couple of relatives in that area for Vacation.
I hope they're alright.
I was just going to make this thread

There was also a nuclear power plant and i think an oil power plant on fire. they are probably going to explode soon. a road was split in half right down the center line.
Gone
The Fukushima nuclear plant is the biggest threat to the region at the moment. The cooling systems for the nuclear containment chamber are on the fritz, but a back up one appears to be working. However, it could easily fail, and if that thing blows, the flooding and damage are the least of Japan's worries. Scientists are saying that if Fukushima's containment chamber fails, the resulting explosion and radioactive fallout will make Hiroshima + Nagasaki combined look like a firecracker. Nearly the entire nation will be covered in toxic fall out and the land uninhabitable for decades.

Let's hope they get that situation under control, as the Prime Minister has issued an Atomic Emergency. Basically, they're biting their knuckles and going "hold on tight, this is gonna be close."

Wait, you take pics of that kind of thing?

Anyway, I hope they get everything sorted out fast before panic sets in and things get even worse. If everyone panics and runs, then everything will be even more out of control, as people run for food and other supplies after the tsunami.
Holy shit. Biggest earthquake since that one in Chile.

Sadly, i have to say this:

i just lurk sometimes
Welp… despite me being dominantly Japanese, I don't, and can't, make myself get to any sort of terms with this. I dunno, maybe I'm too used to earthquake reports? Think about how many times you get mention of natural disasters nowadays; it's like being fed off a conveyor belt.

Still… My deepest regards to the victims, especially of the tsunami. I guess I hope my grandmother is okay over there…

It's gone now.
I've been watching this story over various news channels/Youtube posts, the destruction is pretty vast.

Other than the smaller worries over the economic dive this will cause, a friend of mine was near where it happened, I'm very happy to say she's ok. My thoughts are with the rest of Japan today, I hope everyone comes out of this as best they can.

What'll ya have? Pabst Blue Ribbon.

Ouch.
I don't know what to say :<
Everytime I see something about this it keeps getting worst.

SMWCentral? I leave it to rest.

I sat in may chair like 1 hour straight after work watching the news about this that constantly discussed this. The images are horrible are its like watching a disaster movie. Really, I got a little touched by this, it just so god damn enormous.

I just just cross my fingers for the lowest possible death number possible.
Damn... I just saw that countries like China, Australia and part of EUA are getting in danger of being hit by the tsunami.

Blumiere, how are the things going where you live? And for everyone that lives near the pacific this question is also applied.
Hello There
I heard about this on the radio today. I really hope that Japan can over come this. The tsunami warnings worry me a bit but not to much.

Things are going okay so far here in Hawaii. Hopefully maybe it will be like the last time we had a tsunami warning where nothing happened.

Because I'm at my aunt's house on the third floor instead of my house thats on the 28th floor this time.
HOLY SHIT! I just heard about this not too long ago. Why? WHY?! Everyone just had to make Godzilla jokes. I'd be glad to donate things to Japan. I alway wanted to go there. How big was the Haiti earthquake?
...All I can say about this is, I hope it ends well. Earthquakes suck, plain and simple (and I don't just say this because I have a friend who lives in California).

The 2010 Haiti earthquake measured at around 6.9 on the Richter scale, and since a 1-digit increase of size equals a ten times larger earthquake, this… 2011 earthquake of the Japanese sea was 100 times larger than said Haiti earthquake.

That really shows how well-enforced building regulations are in Japan.

Japan got screwed hard. As long as everyone around them donates money, materials, and medical care, they should be back up. It might take awhile.
We got the ass end of the tsunami again. Southern California issued a tsunami warning last night that quickly turned into a tsunami advisory. We got a 4ft/1.1m swell from it just like the Chile earthquake. Also, Japan is a pretty modern country, I really doubt they'll need our help like the Chileans, it might be harder considering Chile is a mountainous country and the region of Japan that got hit by the tsunami is flat farmland and low-lying city.
I think a post layout goes here somewhere...

Weren't there nuclear power plants there, also? That's the part of this whole shebang that worries me the most, considering Japan already has enough radiation to worry about (I'm referring to the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombs, not Godzilla - that would just be in incredibly poor taste).
