Seeing how most of these threads turns out, I wouldn't be surprised if this idea get trashed because it would probably be hard to implement. But seeing how your top 5 section makes me cringe, I really want you to take this over consideration.

Can you implement a simple favourite button, with the more "favourited" hacks being in the top 5. Furthermore, I suggest you implement a system where you can only have 5 "favourites" per user (you get to remove favourites as a result)
The top 5 hacks are based on their rating, which allows for more precise results, as it goes from 1 to 10, now if we would go with the "favourites" idea, it would basically be either 0 or 1, which wouldn't be as precise.

Actually I going to have to disagree with you. The current method isn't really precise at all, heck I can go to the highest rated hack right now, rate it a 1 and watch it fall into 20th place.

Of course I wouldn't but if I can do it, other people can (and probably already have). What I'm asking is if you could have a true representation of the best hacks out their by having a system that shows you like an particular hack.

BTW, I'm not asking to compliantly remove the ratings system, but to have another statistic influence what should be in the top 5 table.
Well the same goes for Youtube where you could just repeatedly dislike a video to make it less popular.

That's why Youtube have favorites.
Also I really don't think we have enough hacks on here to justify the need for favourites.

Plus once you've downloaded the hack why on earth would you need it on your favourites anyway? You're not going to download it again.

Why rate a hack if you haven't played it yet?

EDIT: Sorry, completely misunderstood your point. It to show you liked the hack so other users can understand which hacks users find the best (out of ALL the great hacks on this site)
That's what the rating and the top 5 is for.

The problem with the top 5 is that most the scores are always equal and that there 1 rank from going from 1st to 20th, so it's not a proper representation.
I agree with this. At some points, the top five hacks are rated 8.0, and the sixth best hack is 7.9...but it will receive much less attention because it is not on the front page. Two days later, however, it might switch places with the top hack because the difference between the two is a single point.

It would be better if the rating system were based on percentages rather than a ten-point scale. That way, the top hack could have a satisfaction rate of 87%, then the next hacks might have 85%, 83%, 81%, and 80%. Even better, because percentages are much more precise than giving a hack a rating out of ten, there might be a bit more fluidity in the top five list (it might change to show today's top five hacks).

This is different though. If I read this correctly, there is no 0; you would only be able to "favorite" something. Then the top 5 hacks would be determined by the number of favorites.

I like this, the main reason being that it completely take downvoters out of the question.

That's exactly what I mean. And the reason I suggested this was to stop the "downvoters".

Although I admit that this could lead into some other problems (like people spamming the top 5 spot) so it might be worth looking into ways to improve upon my idea.
Eh, by "0 and 1" I meant er.. you know like boolean values "true" and "false" and er.. bitwise you know and uhm..
Yeah.

There have been various discussions about the rating system, and suggestions on how to deal with the issue of downvoters.

One idea that's been suggested fairly often is to link ratings to reviews-- that is, you can only rate a hack if you've written a review, and if the review is removed for low quality, so is the rating. (Of course, whether this idea will ever be implemented is completely unknown...)

That's the thing, their has been alot of talk but little action done to resolve this problem. And this is a problem as it means most of the great hacks are going to get targeted while the very good hacks instead gets to rest in their place.

I've always wanted this system to change as well. for this↑↑↑↑ exact reason. Not to throw wood on the fire, but I mainly see this going on with "ASMT" and "ASMWCP". Like at the time I am writing this, "ASMT" is in the Top 5, but by tomorrow, "ASMT" will be out, and "ASMWCP" will be in.
---------
Also, I wouldn't mind having the favorite system in as well.
because, IMHO, they're not even like the "Top Hacks".
What THAT should read is, "Top 5 Most Notorious Hacks".
I've seen plenty of hacks in the "Featured Section" (and even a few in the "normal" section) that are way better than "the top 5".

Like that whole situation with "Super Mario Omega", it has ALWAYS been featured yes, but it's rating was like "7.4", then "Raocow" played it,
and it jumped from like "7.4" to like "8.3" and into the "Top 5" list.
(though, now currently it has been surpassed)

Also, I find it "urking" that all 5 of them have the SAME rating, of, "7.9". There's also a couple of hacks that also have "7.9" as a rating but (sorta unfairly) can't fit on the list.

so... yeah.
That the orhwe hacks "don't fit in the list" has a simple reason: the other hacks have better ratings.
We can't see it, but the rating doesn't stop at 7.9, it's probably like 7.978575465 or something.

Also, why would you ever want a static top 5, that makes no sense.
What you just described is exactly what we want, an always changing top 5.

I should have something witty to put here (even if it's just to update dated info), shouldn't I?

Personally, I'd rather the Top 5 be replaced with 5 featured hacks that are randomly displayed each time the page is loaded. If that's too much of a strain on how the site's inner workings, it can be reduced so it will display 5 different hacks every 24 hours or something.

A random hack thing would actually be pretty cool. But with all hacks, not just featured
