actually I've got two problems:
1. when they are inserted, they don't look anything like (say birdo) should. (yes, I changed the extra info number to the correct number)
Did you insert the proper ExGFX for your custom sprite?
Did you save the stage when you placed the custom sprite in?
Did you double check if you inserted the right sprite in and what value it is?
Lets say:
01 Birdo.cfg <-- In the sprites.txt
If thats right make sure you insert THAT value in the level like:
sprite number: 01
Extra bit: 2, 3
