wanted: inspiration for ghost houses

Something I highly disliked about the clean smw ghost houses was the inability to know where to go. It didnt even feel like a puzzle to me. It just felt like, ill try everything until i get it right. Id like to not make my ghost houses feel stuck, although I dont want them to feel like every other, run and jump level. Do you have any ideas?
Well I like to make my ghost houses like a multi maze level, each room has a maze, which a big puzzle built into it. Try a different twist that no one else has used, or instead of that, build off of someone else's idea, which I mean have part of their idea for a ghost house, and incorporate your idea within that one.

thx for the reply, any other ideas?
In NSMBWii Ghost houses were more like a section of rooms where each one would be a little "magical", moving floors etc. Instead of having a puzzle, it often works to have multiple doors you can go through, they each have a challenge, but only one has the right path to go to, or only one gives you the Pswitch you need, and then you can get to a higher door. Don't make people think they wasted their time though, have dragon coins and other secrets in any rooms that aren't necessary. Make sure each room has a challenge and is fun. And have a truly hidden secret exit, remember all those secret areas and moving platforms in NSMBWii that revealed doors? Do stuff like that.

thx a bunch man, great ideas.
You sure ask a whole bunch of Questions. Keep it up at this rate and your post count'll surpass SNN in about 3 weeks.

Disarray!

Post 300. THIS IS SPARTAH... yeh... you saw that comin'

THIS IS SMWCENTRAL! That too?

Fine, I'll just factor 300: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 12, 15, 20, 25, 30, 50, 60, 75, 100, 150, and 300....

Seems he saw his mistake and wanted to hide his own silliness, too late.

Wow, just like a gift that fell from the sky. I was making a ghost house now, and I lost inspiration for it, so this thread is a very nice coincidence here for my situation! :) Thanks for ideas! :D
...Huh?

Yeah, I noticed that the edit was regarding your 300th post thus my post became moot. So I deleted it to prevent unnecessary off-topic-ness. What I was actually meant to point out (in a slightly rude way), was that your "Disarray! *irrelevant lines go here* phrases are completely pointless and annoying.

Oh look, now I did post again. Oh well.
Pointless and Irrelevant hell yeh, but isn't everything fundamentally pointless. I do it because I wanna do it, and I've been doing it since shortly after I joined the site a good year and a half ago, and I shall continue indefinitely. It's just me.

Disarray!

Does it affect/effect much? No not really... though it once made a Mod angry...

Try making a creative puzzle with some elements (custom blocks or sprites) from the site, and perhaps some tileset mixing. It's also a nice idea to make the ground transparent, to give a bit more of an eery feeling.
awesome, ya, transparent, good idea
If it helps, you could always try different ghost house graphics, and try and make sure the level has a theme to it.

I'm not talking about Black Squirrel's GFX set or a castle style, but I mean some ghost house graphics from more obscure games, and the ghost housed themed to match with sprite graphic edits, custom stuff, music, etc.

For example, dahnamics was making a ghost house for his Dracula Duck boss, and was about to use the default graphics with some custom sprites. But I said that it'd be much better to use actual Duck Tales graphics and ripped them for him, and it makes the level so much more interesting as a result:

Just remember that while way too many people do keep ghost house levels as such, there's no obligation to have them be all vanilla styled, and an interesting graphics set can spruce up the level a lot.

An interesting gimmick could work too, like how that Japanese hack had you invert the colours for part of a puzzle (using custom palettes), or how say, Brutal Mario had the level slowly open up Mario's abilities for his use as he collected Dragon Coins.

If you need random ideas, I saw a great Luigi's Mansion tileset on Mario Fan Games Galaxy recently, which could work well for a ghost house (along with some custom sprites, blocks, gimmicks, puzzles, etc in the style of the game).

As for Mario's Nightmare Quest? Well, it's currently on Fusion Gameworks, ROM Hacking.net or the GCN at the moment.
