yer I do like the bad level tricks, its the kind of thing I aiming for in my hack in a few levels. Going great and I cant wait to play test the second demo.

I enjoy putting in those fake glitches and stuff in my hacks, since it can keep things interesting. It's quite a bit different than in those bad joke hacks that are designed like Chaos Complexx, in that these are not glitches, but rather stuff that is made to look like a glitch (remember the red buzzy beetles in MSQ? Those were actually buzzy beetles colored red, not spinies that look like red buzzy beetles. I basically faked glitched graphics in that case). It definitely puts a new spin on intentional bad design. Of course, there are some things that I don't think can be faked (like bad palettes), which means you will have to think about what to fake if you plan on have a few instances of fake bad design in your hack, Corruptendo.

Also, as an update for YSQ, I got only seven levels to go before I finish the next demo. I'm not sure when I will finish this demo, but it shouldn't be too long.

Before I forget, I have something else to say. I've been looking at some of the .txt files for some songs I've been using in MSQ and YSQ and I managed to learn what some of stuff in those files meant. Because of this, I was able to figure out what was wrong with some songs:

- Remember in MSQ, how a couple of songs were higher pitched than normal, like Yoshi's Island - Mini Boss? It turns out it had something to do with the $EE command. Deleting all instances of the $EE command made the song the correct pitch (though some parts of the song sound slightly iffy, but it's not too noticeable). Doing this also fixed Yoshi's Island - Big Boss (which now has the correct pitch with no noticeable side effects), though Yoshi's Island - Final Boss, can't be fixed this way (getting rid of the $EE command in this song actually made the song sound worse).
- Just like with the SMG song and the Jurassic Park song that broke for seemingly no reason, Yoshi's Island - Big Boss had a line with the $ED command that caused the song to stop after the intro. It was this line in #0 (the third one): $ED $FF $F3. Now, one of you is probably going to tell me "Duh, Yoshifanatic. The decay value is higher than seven. Of course it's going to break in HuFlungDu's Addmusic". However, even when I changed $FF to $7F, the song still wouldn't make it past the intro. Deleting this line fixed the problem (though it did cause the instrument that plays on #0 to sound a little off, but this is barely noticeable). Stuff like this might explain why Turbo Man wasn't able to figure out why the SMG and Jurassic Park songs wouldn't work when he took a look at them for me. It also makes me wonder why that one seemingly harmless line of code was causing these songs to break.
- You know those songs in MSQ that were quite loud? I figured out how to lower the volume of those songs.

That's all I have to say for now.

Hey, I like Jurassic Park, too! In fact, the first movie was one of my favorite movies. Maybe it's because I like dinosaurs in general? Also, that T-Rex skin sounds interesting. You should show it to me if you can (in a PM, not this thread).

Anyway, before this thread turns into a discussion of dinosaurs, let's get back to YSQ.

Here's a screenshot for a level I'm making in YSQ called "Nightmare Forest":

For some reason, Yoshi is too afraid to enter most ghost houses (Not Scary House is an exception because it's a haunted house that isn't scary, even to the biggest cowards), yet he is content with entering a creepy forest filled with sinister creatures at night during a thunderstorm. I may know a lot about Yoshi, but this still confuses me...

This level is sort of a combination between "Invisible Pass" (from MSQ), and "Yoshi Woods" (from YSQ). Throughout the level, there are invisible platforms that are, well... invisible, which can be seen in one of three ways: from the rain hitting it, from enemies walking on them, or when lighting flashes (though there are some platforms that the rain will pass through, so the only way to see them is by the other two ways). There are also places where you are required to choose between two paths, one of which causes Yoshi to wind up back at an earlier part of the level. Of course, there will be a clue on which path is the correct one each time a fork in the road comes up. Also, as you can see in the screenshot, I made the enemies almost invisible, aside from either their eyes or their face (though they become more noticeable whenever lightning flashes). This level is going to be optional, since I plan on making it fairly difficult.

That's it for the updates. I'll post another when I have one.

Also, sometime after I said that I wasn't going to let this thread turn into a discussion of dinosaurs, I remembered that this thread was for discussing the progress on YSQ, which is a hack that revolves around a dinosaur. So, this thread is already about dinosaurs in that sense. *facepalm* I can be so silly sometimes. :)

That's a lot of dinosaur talk, considering that Yoshi is a dinosaur. But, whatever!

Hey guys, I figured it was time for another update on YSQ. I made a video showing off another level I am about to finish today, called "Soda Warehouse".

Link

Originally, this level was going to be called "A Restaurant" and it would be a restaurant themed level, but I couldn't find any graphics that would fit with that idea. I changed the idea for this castle when I discovered a certain sprite in the sprite section that sounded interesting (take a guess which one it was), so I checked it out and it was quite interesting, so I designed a level around it. This level is a fast paced ride that requires the player to evade the soda cans (since touching them hurt Yoshi, unless Yoshi crashes directly into the cans, in which case, he loses a life instantly). It's not very long, but it is quite challenging. I don't show it in the video, but the boss of this level is Clawgrip (from SMB2). There are two differences between the one in SMB2 and the one in this level:

- Instead of rocks, he throws cookies (though I may change the cookies into soda bottles)
- Instead of throwing rocks (err..cookies) at it to hurt it, you have to throw eggs. How do you get eggs if you don't have any? Yoshi can eat the cookies to make eggs.

Also, while fighting this boss, I found another glitch with the Yoshi Abilities patches: If there is a sprite coin nearby, Yoshi can't throw eggs. Sometimes, when Yoshi hits this boss with an egg, a sprite coin appears (other times, a sprite coin doesn't show up). Every time this happens, Yoshi is unable to throw an egg until Yoshi eats the coin or it falls into the pit in the middle of the room. I don't know why this happens, since Mario is able to throw fireballs when a sprite coin is nearby (Yoshi eggs function similar to fireballs if you're wondering). I wonder how this can be fixed?

Also, as soon as I put in the goal flag into this level, I will only have five more levels left to make before I finish the current demo.

Luigi370 PMed me asking to playtest YSQ, so I'm going to add him to the list of playtesters. Now, if anyone else wanted to playtest YSQ, you are out of luck until the final version comes out, or if one of the playtesters is unable to playtest for some reason.

As for updates on YSQ, I don't have any. I put the goal flag in at the end of Soda Warehouse, but other than that, nothing. I posted to let others know that I'm not accepting any more playtesters for the next demo for YSQ.

Hey guys, I've only got one more level left to finish before I finish the next demo of YSQ. As soon as I update my signature to show that 31 levels (42 exits) have been completed, I will begin testing YSQ to make sure everything works correctly. After that, I will PM the other playtesters to let them know that they can download the hack.

Also, I haven't really heard from you lately, Teo17. Have you been able to look into the Yoshi Abilities patches recently to see if you could fix anything? Let me know how that's going.

I lost the link to the page about the yoshi's abilities bugs you wrote. Could you link me to it? Also, I heard it's pretty important for you to fixthe Game Over bug. I think I could easily make a patch or something for that soon, as soon as I have the link.
...Huh?

Hey, thanks for showing me that address, Luigi370, but, unless I somehow didn't do it right, Yoshi's interaction field is still 16X16 when he has something in his mouth. Maybe there is more than three addresses that control Mario's interaction field or something?

I guess. I changed only one address.
There are at least three addresses related to Mario's interaction field, Luigi370, which are mentioned in the description for that one address you showed me.

Also, I have good news! Jimmy52905 finally responded to the PM I sent him three months ago regarding the Yoshi Abilities patches. He mentioned that he will probably end up releasing an improved version of these patches sometime soon (he said that he will try to finish it in less than a month, but he isn't sure exactly how long it will take). Of course, this news arrived kind of late, so the next demo isn't going to benefit from this (though the final version probably will). For this reason, I recommend that Teo17 finds a fix for the game over glitch, since I'm almost finished with the next demo, and I feel that glitch needs to be fixed the most.

Yeah, I lastly was pretty inactive. I remember the Saturday, 20th of September. I started making an ice level for my hack then, and I'm still making that level... O_o I never was making a level such a long time like now. I was pretty busy with school and I was also going out for several-day journey with my school. Since the new version fixing the glitches is going to be out in September, it's pretty good as Jimmy*somenumbers* made this sprite and he knows the code of that Yoshi sprite the best. Actually I don't know what could cause the game over glitch, and I'm sure it will be easy to fix with some simple hijack. =)
...Huh?
I changed only that address and it works fully.
Yeah, Jimmy52905 knows how those patches work, since he's the one that created them. Hopefully, he'll be able to fix most of the glitches that we know about. It certainly helps that I linked to the .txt file mentioning all the glitches we know about with the Yoshi Abilities patches, as well as the video I made showing some of those glitches in action, so that he'll know what to fix. Of course, a few of those glitches aren't really that big of a deal to fix, but others definitely are. Also, I understand that you must have been busy lately, Teo17, what with school starting and all that.

As for what Luigi370 said, did you change the bytes at that address on a SMW rom that has the Yoshi Abilities patches applied to it? If you changed the bytes at that address on a SMW with those patches applied, then I don't get why it didn't work for me. If you changed the bytes at that address on a clean SMW rom, then you need to try it again when the Yoshi Abilities patches applied.

As for updates on YSQ, I've been slacking off a bit these past couple of days, so I haven't been working on YSQ much. I have done a few things, though, like finish the fifth scenario room, begin working on the last level I have to finish (Key Plains), and applied a couple of patches (a patch that stops HDMA effects from appearing on a black screen, a patch built into Lunar Magic that optimizes graphics compression for speed, and the Quickrom patch that reduces slowdown when sprite buoyancy is enabled). I'll probably finish the last level either today of tomorrow.

Edit: I've finished the last level already (wow, that was quick). I'm going to begin testing out the hack to make sure everything works properly. I'll post here again once I finished, so could someone make a buffer post so I'll be able to post in this thread again? I don't think it's going to take me more than 24 hours to play through the whole thing.

Another Edit: You know what? That buffer post won't be necessary, because I not in the mood to test the hack right now. Why? Because I just encountered a serious bug that causes the overworld to have horrible flicker when I trigger the secret exit of one of the levels, which is apparently caused by the patch that stops HDMA effects from appearing on a black screen. Now, I have to port everything over to the copy of YSQ that doesn't have this patch applied to it (good thing I made a backup copy of YSQ before applying that patch). Of course, without that patch, HDMA effects will appear on a black screen (whenever I use HDMA effects anyway), but I think that is much better than having a seizure educing flicker effect on the overworld that not only makes it hard to see the overworld, but also doesn't go away until the game is reset.

I changed that on the Yoshi abilitties.
That's very weird. I don't know why it didn't work for me. Also, it turns out that I didn't have to port all the new stuff over to the backup copy of YSQ that didn't have the HDMA patch (thank heavens for Xkas Anti). Also, I've finished playtesting the next demo, so now the playtesters will get to test it. There were a few minor glitches I noticed in bsnes in compatibility mode*, but other than that it's fine.

Just in case the playtesters forgot, you guys will have to send me a PM every 5 days telling me how far you are into YSQ. Don't forget this. Also, if you don't want to spoil anything in YSQ, then tell me whatever you have to say in a PM (as a bonus, doing this will count towards the progress report PM requirement, as I'll know where you are in YSQ (in some cases at least)).

*Remember when I said my computer couldn't handle compatibility mode in bsnes? It turns out it can run bsnes at 60 fps in that mode. I don't know why it wouldn't run at 60 fps in that mode before, but it doesn't really matter now.
