SuperSkye: The Legacy (Being Rethought: Important New Information Update)

Standard

Hey all you SMWC goobers, and welcome to the WIP thread for my first genuine hacking project, SuperSkye: The Legacy!

Well, first of all, many of you will probably read the title and think "SuperSkye? What's that?" Don't worry, I'll explain. The first thing I'll tell you is that it's certainly not my concept, not by any means.

SuperSkye was a computer game that was created by a team called RunninRiiz back in early 2001. It starred a character named Skye Electra- a laser gun-wielding space girl fighting an invasion of bloodthirsty, warmongering, princess-stealing robots. Pretty cool, huh? Well, the sad thing is, the project was never finished. RunninRiiz leader Reese Davidson scrapped the project in 2002, and nobody on the Internet ever got a chance to play it.

As you might have guessed, this hack is a thoughtful homage to the original SuperSkye. It's meant to be what SuperSkye always could have been, but of course never became. Hence its name: it's a living legacy of a great game that unfortunately could never be released.

Here's the hack's plot:

The planet Skaylia, seventh in the Catholia system. A world where technology flourishes and peace reigns. Having united long ago under an unbreakable pact, its countries are united. War seems an impossibility... until they came.

Megacorp, an evil organization from another dimension, came to Skaylia by means of the Flumes, interdimensional tunnels accessed through gateways built by a Skaylian scientist. Led by the robotic tyrant Zyclon, they sought to take over Skaylia. Megacorp launched a brutal attack on the unsuspecting planet.

It has been one month since Megacorp first came. Almost all of the planet's citizens have been evacuated. Megacorp's troops patrol every inch of Skaylia, slowly crushing out the last resistance. All hope seems lost. But it's not. There's one last hope for the planet, and it lies in a single girl.

Skye Electra, a former agent of the Intergalactic Police Force, has been recruited to fight against Megacorp by the Skaylian Resistance Force, the small organization created to fight Megacorp. Her skills in martial arts and parkour make her up to the job, but can she really take Zyclon down and save Skaylia? It's time to find out... if she can't put a stop to the invasion, all hope is lost.

Got that? Because I really don't want to say this twice.

Okay, just joking. But anyway, here are some screenshots I've taken of the game.

And here are the planned worlds:
World 1- Viridian Valley
World 2- Isle Royale
World 3- District of Hounour/Everdene Forest
World 4- Watersong
World 5- Brumal Basin
World 6- La-La Land
World 7- Lusitania

And let's not forget...
The game's very well-hidden Secret World- The Last Hope

So how can you support this project? Add this logo to your post footer, your profile description, or wherever it is that you keep the userbars of hacks you support!

Oh, and as for needing help, I'm currently not asking for it from anyone. But if any of you are interested in helping out, I won't deny anything. Just send me a PM and I'll hook you up.

The overworld graphics are pretty nice and definitely a good break from the worn-out look that most SMW hacks use. However, it looks like the land has lest variety, meaning, less intricate curves, less depth/change in altitude? It's not at all a bad thing, it looks pretty nice over all, it just seems like, based on the screenshots, that the range of landscapes may be limited.

As far as the story goes, are you planning on using cut scenes, or perhaps just messages? Just wondering is all :P

The graphics in the levels look pretty good, and the design seems promising. My only complaint is that, although the "Skye" text in the header is a nice font, I think you may wish to change the palette a bit- perhaps give it a darker border so its easier to read?

Overall, it looks like this is coming along nicely, you should post more when you get the chance!
Oh, it is so on.
other than what you have said I have no idea on the original, but this looks pretty neat. Pretty good ExGFX.... wait... THIS IS HANDDRAWN #w{O.O}
So remember kids! If you ever get caught having tosave a princess from a foreign land after getting dragged down a drain pipe, jumping while spinning in a circle can help you greatly by allowing you to jump on spinning saw blades, ghosts, and allow you to control your jump better!

I didn't know you could hand draw graphics.. Like. You draw them on some paper, scan it, then convert the files?
Oh, it is so on.
Not exactly, but you're pretty close. I scanned hand-drawn pictures, resized them so they fit into 16x16 squares, then converted them into black-and-white GFX, which I then colored. It's a pretty handy technique, try it out.

And yes, there will most definitely be cutscenes. To cram such a long story into message boxes would be BIG overkill.

PS: Time for more screenshots! These are from a new level called Lost Peak Waterway. More new GFX too.

PPS: That red-headed Skye is the fire version, just in case you didn't guess that.

FINALLY! WE CAN ALL IMITATE CAPTAIN FALCON AND KILL HUNDREDS OF PIK MIN!

Looks neat btw.

Also, whats that heart item do? the SuperSkye version of a mushroom?

Yes, the heart is a mushroom. In the original SS, there were no "super" powerups; you stayed normal the entire time. So I improvised and made a heart.

And PS: The pikmin are only going to be there for a limited time. I was only testing GFX that someone else made, they'll be replaced soon. Besides, they took up the top right square, which causes other GFX to glitch. They'll probably be replaced with the Beriberis I'm using in A BenDoodlerLand Quest.

FINE! But maybe have a couple levels that reference other games (even maybe in a bonus world)?

VWF Dialogue.

Also shouldn't you change the stuff in your signature from SuperSkye: Misty is Missing to SuperSkye: The Legacy?
Good fucking bye.
Nice looking graphics still!

I can't hand draw OR draw pixel-by-pixel, though hand drawing may look better still. Can you go more in-depth about your technique? What conversion program, what real-life medium did you use?
Oh, it is so on.
I draw the original GFX with a thin felt-tip pen on white paper. Every 16x16 tile is about an inch wide. Then I scan the picture, upload it to Paint and resize each square to 16x16. Then I save the new file, upload it in Photoshop, make a new layer, then trace over the pictures to make more detailed black-and white 16x16 tiles. Then they go back to Paint for the coloring, and then I import them into YY-CHR, swap any palettes that got screwed up in the conversion, and it's done! I do this with almost every GFX that I make, except for Skye. She was ripped from a spritesheet.

PS: You can find videos of some of my custom SMW levels on my Youtube channel (Weegeeben). Check it out!

Time for more screenshots! First up are some taken in a new level called Timbertop Terrace, the last one in World 1.

You could think of this level as Lost Peak Waterway's evil twin. It's a nasty level with two parts, the first being a long rope ride through chainsaw hell. The second is a little more laid-back, but it's full of enemies and spikes Yowch. It's a bit of a shocker for World 1, but an experienced player should have no trouble here.

The next round is from the first level of World 3, Jogging Route.

As World 3 is set mainly in the colossal, futuristic city of Hounourville, this level serves as a transition from the wilderness into civilization. It's a medium-paced autoscroll level. The level itself isn't that hard, but there's a lot of stuff in your face. Chucks, Pokeys, and Volcano Lotuses are common threats here.

More coming soon! Stay tuned!

I just posted a video of Lost Peak Waterway onto Youtube: Watch it here!

Feedback on the level design would be GREATLY appreciated.

Yes, there will be a bonus world, where all of the enemies will look different from the rest of the game. But it probably won't be just a bonus world- no, it will do something useful, like, tell a backstory or something.

Maybe I'll post some screenshots of it soon. I've only got a few levels of it started, and all of them are still in the works.

Someone recently asked if a demo for the hack would be released. The answer, I'm afraid, is no. I'm going to finish the hack and post the full version without releasing any demos along the way. Sorry if you were hoping for a demo of some kind.

Sorry for being so inactive lately. I'm under a tight schedule these days, what with school having started up again... mleh.

I haven't said anything, but I dig your graphics.
Hey, I'm Riot. I used to use this website a lot but it has been quite a while since I've been a part of it. Help me out with any of the changes; it'd be much appreciated.

I second that. Your GFX are very well done and this hack looks fantastc over-all.
As a general fan of the original game, I've had no doubt that I'd be playing this game from the first whispers of it in the forums. But now that I've actually seen it, I want to play it more than ever. Your graphics are impeccable. Level design also looks very promising.

Having not played it yet I can't really say anyting, but as of yet it looks like it may have what it takes to become the next top hack.
Video time! This one's of another World 1 level, Dinero Valley. Check it out!

As always, feedback or constructive criticism of any kind would be appreciated. Greatly.

Good news, guys! World 1 is finally finished, right down to every last secret exit and bonus room! Expect videos of its levels popping up on my YouTube profile very soon!

This also means that I can start working on World 2. So far, I'm planning on making it an island-themed world, but not quite a beach. It's more of a grassy island than a sandy one.

Here are some teaser screenshots.

For the outside areas, I'll be using the FG from Shroomgold River, one of the areas from the real SuperSkye (You might recognize it from the screenshot at the top of this thread). The cave GFX is also from SuperSkye. My good friend Piky36 worked on SuperSkye and he's currently working on a project to release GFX from the game as SMW graphics. He sent me the GFX so I could use them, but they'll be released to the public soon, so check the GFX section.

Also, none of these levels are named yet. Any ideas?
